Lyra Ventor
Character
Lyra's lips twitched at the suggestion that Alema might deliberately rearrange the ship to make her life difficult. Given what she'd already seen of the vessel's personality, it wasn't entirely hard to imagine. "I think Alema likes me well enough. Besides, I've been very careful not to leave crumbs on her consoles." She smiled at the memory, then returned her attention to the chamber. An environment that could change without warning was an entirely different challenge from navigating a room she'd already studied, and she was beginning to appreciate why Syn wanted her to develop something beyond ordinary sight.
She took another cautious step, attempting to keep her awareness spread outward rather than concentrating so fiercely on one object that she lost everything else. The sensation remained frustratingly indistinct. Occasionally she thought she could perceive the nearest pillar, only to lose that impression when she moved. Lyra stopped, steadied her breathing, and tried again, determined not to let impatience undo what little progress she'd made.
Syn's explanation about burning through calories reached her just as she managed a few more steps, and the opportunity was too tempting to ignore. "Burn through everything in me? You already do that." The words escaped before she could reconsider, and a thoroughly pleased smile spread across her face. "Not that I'm complaining." Naturally, the distraction cost her whatever tenuous hold she'd established on her surroundings. Lyra sighed, though there was considerably more amusement than frustration in it, and returned to her breathing. Apparently, learning to concentrate while Syn was around would require a whole different kind of discipline.
