DESCRIPTION:

In order to try and corner the 'cheap yet reliable' weapons market Hekler'Kok Defense Industries decided to start and develop a weapon they coined as the Civilian Defense Rifle Model 1, often just shortened to CDR-1, in order to develop a cheap yet reliable rifle.

The first part of the development had to be the materials that would be used in the weapon. In order to keep costs down the materials had to be cheap to produce or acquire and to this end three different materials were chosen: durasteel, plastoid and chrome. Durasteel was chosen due to its cheap yet durable nature, the durasteel was stamped for the receiver for cost and it was machined for the barrel. Plastoid was used for the pistol grip and handguard due to, once again, its cheap yet durable nature. Finally a simple chrome lining was decided on for the barrel to add another layer of durability.

Once the materials were chosen the features needed to be decided on. Some features were obvious, a side-folding stock, ambidextrous controls like the charging handle and magazine release, a built-in bipod for the rifle variant, allowing it to become a squad automatic rifle if a larger magazine was utilized. Once all the features were decided on the design team decided to produce it in two variants: a rifle and a carbine and then began to market it.

Once they began to market and sell the CDR-1 they began to run into a problem, the rifle became more popular than Hekler'Kok expected and the demand began to outpace the supply as planetary militaries, police departments and mercenary groups began to request more crates of each variant. In order to fill this requirement Hekler'Kok partnered with various smaller weapons manufacturers around the galaxy to produce licensed variants on various worlds.

This proved to solve one of Hekler'Kok's problem but created a whole new one. Once these smaller companies began to produce the weapons they began to have a surplus and needed to unload them. In order to do this many companies went against the wishes of Hekler'Kok and began to sell to some more unsavory elements. Crate upon crate of CDR-1's found their way into the hands of criminals, terrorists and insurgents.

In the end the CDR-1 has become one of the most prolific weapons on the modern market, be it the normal market or black market.
