Strengths​

Automation - Large sections and a number of non-essential systems and sub-systems are completely automated, allowing for a smaller crew and in turn ensuring that they can focus on the more important sections and systems of the vessel.

Stasis Chambers - Even with the advent of Hyperdrives that cut travel time down to weeks, there are still sections of the galaxy that are unexplored or lacking proper and safe hyperdrive trails. In this event, the vessel is equipped with a number of stasis chambers for the crew and colonists - allowing them to sleep through the bulk of their long journey to a new planet.

Detachable Forward Section - The large forward section of the vessel - which contains the bulk of the primary systems - is capable of being detached from the rest of the vessel. This can serve a number of purposes including utilizing the forward section as a large escape pod; though leaving the habitation domes unprotected in such a manner is highly discouraged and frowned upon.

Support Craft Carrier - A great strength of the vessel is its capability of carrying a large quantity of support craft, such as shuttles, scientific vessels, mining vessels, etc, etc.

Deflector Shield Focus - Each vessel is equipped with multiple redundant Shield Generators to ensure that the vessel and its habitation domes are always protected from harm.

GalaxyGuard Mk VII - A continuing feature on vessels manufactured by Von Sorenn Industries, this system assists in strengthening a vessel's Deflector Shields, providing additional endurance and range to ensure additional protection.

AR-0B Damage Reduction Armor Component - Likewise, a feature seen on many vessels manufactured by Von Sorenn Industries, this component maintains an ablative current that courses through the armor plating. This current serves in removing debris and minor damage from the hull, increasing its longevity and reducing the time between replacement maintenance of the armor plating and hull.

Elysium Atsmopheric Processor - A common sight on many Colony vessels - the Halcyon colonial ark is outfitted with a powerful terraformer to be utilized in those instances where a world that the colonist are traveling to is more toxic or otherwise inhospitable outside of the Habitation Domes.

Weaknesses​

Automation - The downside of ensuring that a multitude of the systems are automated, is that those systems are highly susceptible to Ion and EMP based weaponry. In those instances, entire sections of the Colonial Ark can be effectively shut down and rendered inert or destroyed.

Tomral RM-76 Targeting - Each Colonial Ark is equipped with a handful of defensive turrets - however, these turrets are incapable of targetting any vessel as they are utilized in dispatching comets and asteroids that present a clear danger to the colonial ark or that have strayed into the ark's path and present a possible danger to the habitation dome.

Nebulon-B Syndrome - Much like the well-known Frigate that served with distinction during the Galactic Civil War, the Halcyon Colonial Ark has a series of long sections that separate the habitation domes and the bulk of the forward section from each other. These sections, though protected, are not as well protected as other sections of the vessel - with sustained damage resulting in these areas being easily shorn off from the rest of the vessel.

Exposed Habitation Domes - Though they are protected via the vessel's deflector shield generators, the Habitation Domes are easily targetting and difficult to miss due to their size and location on the vessel.

Stasis Chambers - While utilized for longer travel or traveling into those corners of the galaxy still lacking proper hyperspace lanes, these chambers still have their own problems. One potential problem is that the system that monitors, maintains, and activates the system can be damaged. In this instance, it can see the crew and colonists become locked in suspended animation, left to drift among the stars.

Deflector Shield Focus - The bulk of the vessel's deflector shield generators are located towards the habitation domes, resulting in weaker shields near the forward section of the vessel.

Support Craft Carrier - The Halcyon Colonial Ark is incapable of carrying or supporting any kind of military Starfighters or similar squadrons.

Exposed Bridge - The bridge is located at the extreme front of the vessel, putting it out in the open and making it easily targeted. Lacking any kind of secondary bridge or means to control the vessel otherwise, the loss of the bridge can result in the vessel being left drifting in space, or losing control - either way, the colonist would be left in danger.

Description​

There was a time when large fleets of Colonial Sleeper Vessels were pushed off into the void towards worlds that for thousands of years would remain silent until the advent of Hyperdrive reunited those planets ages later. Still, there are those worlds in the dark corners of the galaxy that remain untouched, sitting in the darkness of the void without a Hyperspace route or means to properly explore and discover the region that keeps them shrouded in mystery. The Halcyon-class Colonial Ark is a callback to those ancient times and contains a number of systems and technologies - that while matching the technological level of today - would just as easily be found on those older vessels. The Halcyon-class is intended for those planets that are sitting at the edge, hidden in Wild Space and the Unknown Regions, drifting in the void far from the nearest hyperspace routes and its capabilities reflect that planning. The bulk of the vessel is a massive transport designed to carry four habitation domes into the unknown to be deposited on those worlds that have been left untouched by the wider galaxy as a whole. In turn, once those habitation domes are deployed, the vessel itself - containing a Terraformer - is then intended to be landed on the planet with its crew watching over the Terraformer and maintaining it before joining one of the habitation domes. However, there are a number of glaring drawbacks to the vessel - specifically its lack of any kind of offensive capabilities, as well as its lack of speed and maneuverability. In short, the Halcyon-class is a larger lumbering behemoth of a vessel that must rely on its extreme defenses in order to survive its long journies. Though it is equipped with a series of Tomral RM-76 Heavy Laser Cannons - their automated systems prevent the weapons from being utilized offensively, with its primary targeting and tracking programmed to target large asteroids and comets that are a clear and present danger to the vessel. Thus it relies on its multiple GalaxyGuard Mark VIIs - providing additional endurance and range to their deflector shields, as well as its number of anti-missile capabilities, and Electronic Countermeasure Systems as it slowly creeps into the void. Its design presents another problem, as its reminiscent of the older Nebulon-B Frigates - with those sections that connect the forward of the vessel and the habitation domes being easily targeted. Sufficient and continuous damage to these sections can sheer them off of the vessel, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives. There is also the worry - that as the larger forward section can serve as a form of escape pod - of the crew leaving the habitation domes stranded; or alternatively, as the bridge is left exposed at the extreme front of the vessel, should it be damaged in a sufficient means or destroyed outright, it would render the rest of the vessel inoperable as it drifted in space. Still, even with a number of concerns and drawbacks of the vessel, there are those seeking a new life on new worlds that would willingly overlook these weaknesses and problems for the promise of a new beginning, even with the present dangers that still lurk in the dark corners of the galaxy. The Halcyon-class Colonial Ark provides a means of Hope for those that are looking for some untouched Eden to call their own.
