My advice for anyone new is to look at a couple of active major factions that are running stories and try a couple; then see where you find most enjoyment.

Also to try an open public social thread, as they are easy enough to get into and work out your character, cantina, bar, cafe etc. If you want a smaller thread, first reply threads for these are usually quite easy for others to join and give you some interaction.
