SPECIAL FEATURES
  • The GORGON-Class Prototype Physiological Augmentations consist of a variety of enhancements and augmentations designed for the human body, in order to increase the effectiveness of the Death Troopers who received them far above normal human levels. While many of the augmentations are inherently cybernetic in nature, they're often a combination of traditional mechanical cybernetics with bioengineered systems, akin to Yuuzhan Vong biots or the biotechnology of other species within the galaxy. Augmentations include partial or total replacements, such as partial replacement of the nervous system with bioengineered cells and connections, replacement of the eyes with similarly-bioengineered components (though also including some traditional cybernetics, increasing the perceptable wavelengths rather than just increasing visual acuity and night vision). They can also include the direct augmentation of previously-existing organ systems, such as the addition of rybcoarse synthetic muscle fibers to an already-augmented muscular system (both active muscle fibers and the heart itself), bioengineered artificial lungs, plating or outright replacement of various bones with duraplast skeletal sections, as well as a significant cranial neural implant, increasing the memory capacity and learning capability of the augmented subjects, as well as allowing them a direct brain-to-computer interface, much like similar, but much more bulky implants in the days of the Galactic Civil War.
Strengths:
  • Enhanced Visual Acuity: The implantation of the enhanced eyes, as well as the necessary modifications to the subject's ocular nerve and blood flow around the new eye, results in a visual acuity far beyond that of a standard human or cloned trooper. Not only are they able to resolve fine detail at a range far higher than unaugmented humans, but their night vision has also been highly increased, as well as granting them the ability to see partially into the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums.
  • Extreme Strength: Between the chemical stimulation to increase muscle growth, and the implantation of large amounts of rybcoarse synthetic muscle fiber, the subject's strength has been considerably enhanced, rendering them capable of feats of strength that are only approached by the most physically adept members of baseline, unaugmented humanity.
  • Heightened Endurance: With the muscular enhancements, as well as modifications to the circulatory system (including the heart and lungs), the augmented subject is able to do more and go longer than their unaugmented peers, including in highly adverse environments. This is coupled with a lessened physical need for rest after highly strenuous activities (such as those undergone during combat), though the subject often psychologically requires a similar amount to unaugmented soldiers.
  • Enhanced Atmospheric Capability: The augmentations to the lungs of the subject enable them to breathe in more adverse conditions than baseline humans; they are able to function more easily in low-oxygen environments and they can hold their breath longer (owing to more efficient transfer of oxygen from the air), and they can function more easily in heavily polluted, smokey, or poisonous environments, though nowhere near as well or as long as when utilizing a dedicated breath mask or atmospheric filtration system within an armour helmet.
  • Enhanced Reaction Times: With the heavy modification (through induced increased myelination) and some outright replacement of the subject's nervous system, decreasing the time a subject needed to react considerably, into the low tens of milliseconds, far faster than that of an average human in the 200-250 millisecond range.
  • Increased Memory Capacity: With the cranial neural implant, the subject's ability to learn and recall information is greatly increased. Not only do they showcase eidetic memory and photographic memory, but this often passes into long-term memory, rather than being only in the short term; as well, after their augmentations, subjects also display hyperthymesia. Alongside those, the amount of accessable memory they have available is theoretically highly increased, compared to the limits of baseline human synaptic plasticity and connectiveness, though it is unknown yet if this will prove true. Lastly, the capacity exists for certain information to be directly downloaded to the implant, from which it can be accessed by the brain.
  • Man-Machine Interface: Alongside the cranial neural implant comes a specific interface, which can be interacted with through an external section of the implant at the base of the subject's skull. When external equipment is properly equipped, this enables the subject to have a more intimate interface with various technologies they might use, ranging from armour systems, vehicular control, and computer-connected information processing capability. This also allows them to directly interface with an artificial intelligence or droid brain, though it has yet to be properly tested.
  • Durability: The skeletal modifications, as well as the enhancements and replacements to other aspects of the subject's body, have resulted in a greatly-increased ability to withstand damage compared to normal humans. The skeleton is much stronger than baseline, requiring significantly more force to break bones, many of the more vital organs have been rendered more durable, and the neural augmentations are able to automatically suppress perception of pain in order to keep the subject functional long enough to get to cover and medical aid.

Weaknesses:

  • Mental Instability: The invasive nature of the neural modifications has caused deviations from normal human mood response. Some subjects exhibited highly increased aggression, while others exhibit significantly stunted emotional response except for the extreme ends of their emotional spectrum. One subject has been made to undergo regular tests, to ensure that he is not deviating too far from established acceptable mental parameters.
  • Invincibility Complex: Due to the decreased pain response offered by the neural augmentations, as well as knowledge of the high benefits of other augmentations, nearly every subject developed, to some degree, a sort of invincibility complex, leading them to undertake more dangerous actions than were even considered for their increased capabilities, and many of them downplayed any injuries they sustained until it was far too late to actually save them.
  • Necessary Supplements: To ensure that the subjects did not experience any decreased capabilities, or negative side effects (including eventual rejection) to their augmentations, they were all required to take numerous supplements, both in the form of food supplements and mandated biotherapies and checkups at regular intervals. Under ideal circumstances, this is not much of a problem; circumstances, however, are rarely ideal, and without access to the supplements and biotherapies they required, some subjects ended up dying due to multi-system failure of their augments and replaced organs.
  • Slow Healing: The increased strain put on the body by the many augmentations has resulted in a decreased natural healing ability of the subject, as the energy requirements to heal various injuries push beyond what the body really has available; oftentimes, significant injuries that would still be naturally-healable to baseline humans require heavy use of bacta for augmented subjects. As well, many of the augmentations cannot be healed naturally at all, and would need highly invasive surgeries to repair and replace them if they get damaged.
  • High Cost: The augmentation of the Death Troopers was a significant expense, for fairly low return. Any attempt to revitalize the program would be just as costly, if not moreso, when factoring in various improvements to the procedures and augmentation materials.
  • High Mortality Rate: Many of the individuals who were selected to undergo the augmentation procedures died as a result of their augmentations. Some on the operating table while the augmented organs and systems were being applied, others later as their bodies couldn't cope with the stress of handling the augmentations, and others later as various systems ceased proper functioning or were rejected by their bodies.
DESCRIPTION

The Galactic Empire, based on Kamino and outwardly led by Tanomas Graf, was known for its continuation of the ideals of Palpatine's old Galactic Empire—including in the use of various military units. One such military unit was the Death Troopers; selected from among the droves of standard stormtroopers for their skills, abilities, and obvious physical advantages, they were well known as a terrorizing sight among the regime's enemies, both internal and external.

Like the Death Troopers of old, these Death Troopers were also augmented to a degree, which gave them enhanced capabilities in the field over their more mundane brothers. However, certain scientists within the Empire thought that it could be possible to enhance some of these subjects even further than ever before, granting them capabilities far beyond what was normally considered practical to attempt. Very soon after its initial formation, one of the squads of the Death Trooper program, GORGON Squad, was selected to be the testbed for these modifications, alongside MINOTAUR Squad, their sister unit, and various other Death Troopers who had yet to receive their unit assignments. After ensuring that the various chosen Death Troopers were at a level of physical capability necessary for the augmentations to work, many of them went under the knife, undergoing the augmentation procedures.

The initial mortality rate was high itself, with approximately 64% of the subjects not surviving the initial augmentation procedures. As time went on, this proved to be the norm, as many more quickly succumbed to various complications, leaving the four members of GORGON Squad as the only ones left who fully meshed with their augmentations. Their combat effectiveness showed a massive leap from their few prior assignments, one which couldn't be explained by only experience, as all the members were already highly experienced prior to being assigned to the Death Trooper program and the squad.

Eventually, however, the other members of the squad began to die off, some to combat, others to accidents, with later versions of the augmentation procedure being applied to the new additions. Eventually, however, the majority of squad members went missing in action during an extended operation, with only one member, Death Trooper designation DT-2319, being the one to remain within Imperial service, both in the Galactic Empire, during its merge into the First Order, and now in its rebirth as the Core Imperial Confederation, and later again having found himself scooped up by the New Imperial Order. With the lack of a dedicated Death Trooper program in the NIO, as well as the addition of knowledge and augmentation procedures from other sources, it is unlikely that the GORGON augmentation program will be taken up again, leaving DT-2319 as the only known carrier of these augmentations—though it is possible that other members of the former GORGON squad could still be found in the galaxy, carrying these augmentations as well.
