Public Gone in the Shadows [EU][Open]

[OOC Thread]

"This is Sera Kraal of Outpost 227. Our research... What we were doing here... So many are gone. If you are receiving this distress message, please help us - we need immediate assistance."

The message carried over the distress signal leads back to one place only: A seemingly innocuous settlement located in a remote mountain range on Svivren, a planet in the Outer Rim. The same location has been the source of other 'unusual' signals that have penetrated deep within Sith and Republic territory. Unfamiliar syntax and robust encryption have kept the truth in the dark, but it's obvious that Outpost 227 is anything but a normal colony.

Upon arrival, things appear quite ordinary, and yet...

No one is home. Erratic footprints suggest many fled in one direction, towards a network of nearby caves. There are scorch marks - signs of a firefight - but no bodies to speak of. Everything from cold, untouched lunch to machinery left on suggests whatever happened, happened fast.

Further up the mountain, an array of sensory and listening stations monitors the stars above. The source of the signal.

OBJECTIVE ONE - A SILENT POST
The Eternal Union recently established a listening post high in the mountains of Svivren to spy on the Sith Empire and High Republic. However, it has since gone dark, and the investigation team we sent has not reported back. You will enter the station in teams, discover what happened, locate the missing team, and retrieve data logs from the station's archives.

OBJECTIVE TWO - A COLONY VANISHED
A colony was established in the valley below to support the listening post and its staff. Yet, upon arrival, all the inhabitants appear to be missing. There are signs of violence and struggle, dried blood and blaster fire, but not even a single body. This objective is simple - find the colonists, rescue them if you can, and make sure what happened doesn't happen again.

Rinea's lone shuttle touched down on an unused landing pad near the entrance of the listening post itself. She was more than eager to be the first one inside. After all, Outpost 227 was officially under UNICOM.

"So why are the records scrubbed?" She muttered.

The chiss put her datapad away and stepped off the shuttle. She turned back to 'Gravemind' who would be her only escort assigned to this job, much to the displeasure of many, who felt a mercenary could not be trusted in such a role.

"Are you the type to touch things without asking?" Half-serious, half-tease.

She truly wasn't sure if Kaila was one to randomly push buttons or the like. The galaxy was full of curious people, often stupidly so, and Rinea would lie to say she wasn't sometimes among them.

Their first obstacle was a blast door sealed shut. It did not automatically recognize her clearance. Odd. She opened a subtle panel, meant for emergency use, and tried to use the keypad. Her authorization code did not work. Stranger still. Her brow furrowed. Maybe they'd have to hotwire this thing. Rinea began the slow, painstaking process of carefully removing the keypad and examining the wires... They could be here for an hour.

"But of course." hummed "Gravemind".

It was practically the former Seeker's job description, after all.

The power-armored behemoth followed with languid but weighty steps, frigid air tossing her cloak as the two Union agents embarked on their mission. Her force signature was hidden from all, perhaps their "comrades" would've taken her more seriously otherwise, but she supposed sacrifices must be made to keep her cover.

Even if it made the secret sith livid at times...

But here, in the field, beside her, none of that mattered. She had a task to keep her wandering mind focused and a chance to learn more about this mysterious organization she'd helped rebuild.

She came to stand before the door, gauntleted fingers laced behind her back, masked lenses staring up at the from beneath a fur-lined hood.

Snow crunched beneath her armored boot whenever she'd excitedly shift her weight, while she waited for the adventure.

And waited...

...and waited.

A step in place as she glanced the chiss' way.

"Hrmh..."

She placed a gloved hand against the blastdoor, inspecting the material. It seemed similar enough to common durasteel, plenty to keep wild animals and common thieves out, low profile.

But easy to cut.

"...Director..." she sighed.

"I've found us a key..."

Gravemind had already pulled a lightsaber before anyone could stop her, using Exo-muscle and the weight of Turadium armor to drive the weapon forward in both hands. The orange blade sank with a superheated hiss, vanishing inside the steel no sooner than it had appeared.

And, once again without waiting for permission, the power-armored "mercenary" put all her strength into pushing that blade into the beginnings of a circular cutout big enough for the both of them.

"Hn-gh..."

Despite the strain, she made quick work of it.

"Are you sure this is the right place?" Arris asked Mercy Mercy .

Moments ago, they had received a distress signal coming from the very listening post she was paid to infiltrate. Their goal? to bug the damn place, of course. It didn't take a genius to imagine that this was some kind of spy station, given that the signals were not only encrypted but that the sensor arrays could penetrate into the far edges of Sith Space. Whatever data they were gathering might be worth a high price to the right buyer.

Arris continued her anxious protests. "There are other ships. I don't think we're alone here. And that distress call sounded.. Weird. Kinda creepy."

The Cyborg looked up at one of the tall structures. This was to be their entry.

"If she says it's th'right place, then it's th'right place."

Sana hadn't had a cig in a minute, resulting in her frankly terrible mood. Not to mention that if this was some sort of strange force phenomena, the merc knew she couldn't really do much about it. People, she could shoot. Same with robots. But if there were ghosts or some other supernatural element at play, she was shit outta luck.

Letting out a soft sigh, she looks to her boss, hoping that whatever pay she got would be well worth the trouble. Maybe she could actually afford to eat something good for once. Or maybe she could splurge on a nice blaster or something. Regardless, she hoped that the other merc with her wouldn't complain the whole time.

"If you're so worried about all'a th'stuff we might find, then y'could've just stayed on th'ship, y'know."

She gives a grin to the cyborg, only half-joking. Hopefully the boss knew more about what to expect here, because she was flying blind, herself.

What the hell is he even doing here...?

One moment, he was living it up in High Republic space.

And now he's here, answering a distress call in the middle of no where, without any kind of support that he's aware of. What fun.

The Horizon's Solitude landed near the settlement in the valley, landing pads touching down on the terrain. The ramp of the shuttle would lower, as the man stepped down. Cycler rifle in hand, as he looked around. Eyes eventually drifting towards the settlement. Gradual steps led the man towards the lifeless settlement.

To say that his hairs were standing on end was an understatement; he was prepared for anything and everything to jump out at him. Cautiously entering the settlement, as he kept a tight hold of his rifle in his main hand. His offhand was grasping one of his blasters holstered at his side, ready to quickdraw in an instant.

He saw what was out in the open. The blaster markings along the walls of buildings, the splattered blood along those same walls and the ground. Clearly, something went horribly wrong. His first thought was that a gang of raiders came by, but normally they're more destructive than this. If he gets around to checking any of the buildings, he'll need to see if any valuables were taken. Another guess is that native creatures came in, killed who they could, and took the bodies. Maybe everyone else ran as far as they could.

He'll have to see what it is.

In the meanwhile, while he knows the likelihood of a response is incredibly low, he has to at least try and see if anyone's alive around here. And so, his voice spoke up, loud enough to spread across the settlement.

"...helloooo?"

She managed to get a higher vantage point on top of one of the buildings the colonists had erected after arriving. She had come into the colony about a few minutes earlier and noticed the signs of conflict. The area was rocky so she needed to find the best escape route attackers might have taken. The attackers, whoever they were, had taken the bodies or people with them so they would need an easy route out. Injured or wounded would be dead weight, and the dead definitely would be. That meant they would need an easy path for an exit.

She lifted her rifle up and peered through the scoop trying to look for a good pathway one might take. As she looked over the landscape she had to wonder if it was cannibals, slavers, raiders, or maybe a group out for intel. Raiders seemed least likely as they would have killed everyone and probably left the colony in a burning heap unless they felt they could ransom the people.

She sure as chit didn't want to be dealing with cannibals, everyone she had ever met were crazed lunatics and highly unpredictable. Slavers or some other government seeking intel would be the preferable outcome because they could be negotiated with if the colonists were still alive.

She peered through her scoop seeing couple of different directions that could have been taken. A frown crossed her face, if the attackers were off worlders they would be heading for ships that meant there wasn't much time or she was already to late that meant even if she put her tracking skills to use, she would be slowed down even more.

Her thoughts were broken up though as someone shouted.

"...helloooo?"

She pulled her head from her scoop and dropped down into a crouching position. She moved towards the other end of the roof peering over edge. She saw a male standing there calling out, he clearly wasn't a colonist and doubt if he was part of the raiding party he would be shouting hello. Didn't mean though he was here for the same reason she was she raised her rifle, pointing it in his direction as she stood up and approached the edge of the roof.

"Ain't nobody home cowboy. What brings you to the ass end of the Galaxy?" Her tone was gruff and serious as her rifle laser sight dot pointed at the mans chest.

Good news, someone responded. Bad news, they currently have a rifle aimed at chest.

He had noticed some commotion coming from the top of one of the buildings, to which the voice of someone called out in response to him.

["Ain't nobody home cowboy. What brings you to ass end of the Galaxy?"]

Gaze had ventured over to where the voice came from, and he noticed the rifle pretty quickly, especially due to the laser sight that was on it. Squinting towards her for a few moments, before electing to speak up himself.
"...considering the fact you haven't blasted a hole right through my chest yet, I'm willing to reckon we're likely on similar sides." With that, there was a slow release of his grasp on his holstered blaster, lifting his hand up and holding it open as a sign of peace.

"I ain't here for any harm. Picked up a distress signal coming from this place, and against my better judgement, decided to come and investigate. Seems as though I'm late to the party..." Looking around once more.

Eventually, gaze returned back over towards her.
"So. What'll it be?"

Mercy looked up at the large tower clawing up into the sky.

It certainly looked formidable.

"This is the place." She said finally after letting Arris and Sana quibble against one another for a bit. "Looks like we are not the only ones interested in the prize. If someone tries to interfere with our mission, we throw them off the tower from the top." In truth Mercy hoped that someone would try to interfere with what they were doing here.

She didn't want this to devolve into some sort of detective mystery story with ghosts. That was just... not satisfying at all.

Mercy noticed the grumpy tone from Sana, even after only having worked with her a little. She pulled out her pack with cigarettes, laced with the same sort of chit that deathsticks matched but with a lower intensity. "Here, smoke it up, I don't need you two tearing each other's heads off before we get to an actual fucking fight."

One was passed to Sana, the other to Arris, then she took one herself for good measure.

Cigarettes lit, aura restored, she walked through the opening first. Which might surprise both of the mercs. Usually bosses preferred to hang back and let them do all the work.

Arris might have suspected it, but now Sana would also know Mercy wasn't like the average crime boss.

She watched him carefully as he moved closer, the dot on his chest moving with him. She let out a little scoff as he made the comment on reckoning, they were on the same side. Gen didn't necessarily have a side, all things considered she was a merc but right now one side of the table had an offer on it and the other didn't. Distress calls and Rescue missions didn't pay top cred in most cases but at least it was usually something. If not, depending on who you were dealing with they might pay more to have you turn a blind eye.

"Ah you're a good Samaritan then?" She chided as she lowered her rifle realizing at least for the moment the man didn't seem to a be a threat or apart of Colonies captures crew. Her rifle dropped to her side as she moved to the edge of the roof and dropped down with ease to the ground below her armor compensating.

"Seems we are both late, I only arrived maybe ten minutes before you." Her eyes scanned the outpost a little bit. Not exactly looking for anything in particular. "Not sure who or what hit this place, but it looks like it was quick and violent. There seems to be two possible ways whoever struck this place could have taken." She looked to the east and then to the south nodding her head in that direction when she did.

"Names Gen." She said quickly as she started to look at the ground beneath her feet. She was looking for footprints to see if she could discern for sure which direction the captors took. "My tracking skills are a bit rusty, but with some luck maybe I can figure out which way they went." It was partially a lie her general tracking skills were rusty but if she used magick it would be a lot quicker, but if she used it then this planet would have to be the cowboy's graveyard. Right now, she didn't feel like killing the good Samaritan.

"Since I don't know who or what we are up against, if your capable we can tackle this together. You can handle yourself, right?" She let a half smirk cross her face to let him know she was half joking with that last comment. "You much of a tracker?"

The cyborg only managed a snort at Sana's remark. Maybe she had something to say, but Mercy quickly took the show into her own hands.

"Oh, so you're looking to stack some bodies then, eh Merce?"

She quite liked dropping the 'y' from the Sith's name. Might keep it up.

Arris took the cigarette and leaned towards Mercy to ignite off of hers. The cyborg took a drag, careful not to down it in one breath, as was always a possibility with artificial lungs.

"So who's the mouthy new girl?" She asked with a glance over her shoulder.

The trio entered what appeared to be an abandoned building. Only the emergency light panels were on... thankfully, her cyber eyes allowed Arris to see better in the dark than any 'ganic human could. The air was interesting, quite sterile. It seemed they had pristine, state-of-the-art filtration. Which felt odd given that this wasn't a toxic world or anything, nor was it a hospital.

"Say... what do you think happened here?"

Sana took the cigarette gratefully, falling silent as she pulled out a lighter with a satisfying click and ignited the tip of the cig, After taking a small drag, she let out a small smile and blew the smoke out of her nose. She was content to let the Sith take the lead. As far as she was concerned, the special people with magic could do whatever they wanted so long as they paid her and they weren't trying to throw her under the bus. The free cig was a plus.

"Name's Sana, blondie." She began with, following the others into the seemingly abandoned outpost. Her eyes took a few moments to adjust to the dim light, but she looked around all the same, "Dunno, but I don't like how clean this place is. I'd expect some sorta sign of struggle or somethin'. Doesn't even look like there's any dust."

Drawing her blaster from its holster, she held it idly in her main hand as the other ran its fingers across a nearby console. Examining her glove, she confirmed that the dust was absent from it.

"'S like they all just up'n disappeared on us."

There was an exhale let out as the woman lowered her rifle from aiming towards him. He's confident with his speed on the draw, but it'd be pretty hard to pop off a bolt before she managed to put a round in him. So, not having to do any of that was probably for the best for the both of them.

["Seems we are both late, I only arrived maybe ten minutes before you. Not sure who or what hit this place, but it looks like it was quick and violent. There seems to be two possible ways whoever struck this place could have taken."]

His gaze followed to where she nodded her head, resting his free hand on his belt. "Not sure either. My initial guesses were either some sort creature, or a pack of raiders. Though, usually raiders are more...messy than this."

["Names Gen. My tracking skills are a bit rusty, but with some luck maybe I can figure out which way they went."]

"Gavin. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Gen." Giving his wide-brimmed hat a brief flick, in greeting.

["Since I don't know who or what we are up against, if your capable we can tackle this together. You can handle yourself, right? You much of a tracker?"]

"Well..." He was a pretty good tracker. But, he didn't wish to reveal why he was. Dropping the fact that he's a bounty hunter probably isn't the best idea around this part of the galaxy. "Would like to think I can 'handle myself' just fine, Gen." Keeping a lighthearted tone as he spoke, his rebreather modulating his voice somewhat. He kept looking around for a moment, before noticing a set of footprints off in the distance. "As for the tracking? Think I've got your answer." Nodding his head to motion to the woman to follow, before stepping over.

Approaching where the beginning of the erratic footprints were, crouching down next to them as he rested the butt of his cycler rifle on the floor.
"Footprints here, and they seem to lead..." Pointing down as the footprints, trailing along where they went, which led him to pointing towards caves in the distance. "Towards the caves in the distance. Willing to bet that's where these people ran off to."

"What do you think?"
Letting his arm drop back to his side, as he looked back over to the woman.

Hetton was piloting a Diarchy Uplsion Class D shuttle his job was was to find out why a colony has gone quite. He was with a few marines, and all wore NZ-AMA-II armour, and carrying a couple of grenades and whilst he carried a blaster pistol, the rest carried balsters. He was in bringing in a platoon of marines, he sure the Lieutenant Kaines was keeping an eye on him, after all he just swore loyalty after being a pow. He doubted they trusted him much, but this was meant to be a cake walk. All it is some colonist have not contacted them, and they where here to see what was wrong, probably a faulty comms system.

As he piloted the shuttle just outside of settlement, as he put the shuttle down he saw another vessel already landed. No doubt someone would noticed them coming, he shouted back cargo hold, "Lieutenant Kaines, their ship just outside, but I can't see anyone." He came up to look, and ordered him "Land it next to it, me my men will check it out" He piloted it about 96 meters away from it, as it landed quite smoothly, the shuttle bays doors opened and the marines stormed out towards the ship.

He then handed over the comms to the pilot, and said "I will keep an eye on them, would not want them to be too gung ho, you know their average iq is less than banther" The pilot laugh, no matter the navy, you always took the mickey out of the marines, as it was something to do. He grabbed his side arm, and made his way out, looking for anyone.

In this type of business, it was best not to ask too many questions. So, Gen felt no need to push Gavin on his occupation. The fact he was capable and was fairly descent at tracking was good enough of an answer for her. She followed Gavin's sightline towards the cave's off in the distance. It would make sense but would also mean whoever did this didn't mean to take their captives off world.

"You're right about it not being raiders, it's clear by the marks and dried blood a few people at least were injured or even killed." Though she wasn't so sure on the killed part, but a few were injured at the very least. "The camp would have been ransacked more and the injured or dead left behind by raiders. Unless they are cannibal type." Which against he hoped they were not.

"There really isn't a point to take dead weight with you. It also wouldn't be any wild creatures at the very least, maybe low sentient ones. You would see allot more damage to the buildings and droppings." She sniffed the air around her, it was heightened do to one of her mutations. "There would also be more Ammonia or a pheromone smell in the air."

"I was thinking a military outfit or slavers but if they headed off to the caves, I don't think it was either of those unless it's more local. So maybe a run in and bad dealings with the Svivreni? Though I have heard of some Ewoks here so maybe cannibals after all, little furry ones?" It was strange but Gavin was right the tracks led off to the caves and that was their best chance at success.

"I guess we check it out….." She was about ready to move when her comms crackled to life stopping her.

"This is Commander TK Olraen aboard a Stars of Hope Initiative frigate entering Svivren orbit.

She looked to Gavin curiously wondering for a moment if they were with him. "You with them, they aren't with me?" Sher said as she looked over her shoulder seeing another ship coming down back where Gavin had entered the colony from. "What about them?" She nodded off in the direction of the landing ship. "If they are with you say so if not let's go for the caves military will just make a mess of this whole damn thing."

There was a lift of himself back to his feet, using the cycler rifle in hand for assistance as he let out a groan. Listening to Genesis Draykin Genesis Draykin as she gave her thoughts on the whole matter.

["I was thinking a military outfit or slavers but if they headed off to the caves, I don't think it was either of those unless it's more local. So maybe a run in and bad dealings with the Svivreni? Though I have heard of some Ewoks here so maybe cannibals after all, little furry ones?"]

"Them ones that are about this high?"
With his off hand, he measured the height of an Ewok to just below his thigh. "I ain't know much 'bout 'em, but I'd be surprised if such little fellas are the ones to have taken out a civilization like this. But hey, what do I know, it could be anything."

He had also started to move towards the caves, though halted as the other's comms suddenly spoke out. Lifting a brow, as he looked over.

["This is Commander TK Olraen aboard a Stars of Hope Initiative frigate entering Svivren orbit.

Looking towards Gen, after.

["You with them, they aren't with me?"]

"Ain't with me, either."

Then looking towards where she had looked, at the sight of another ship coming in. Piloting oddly close to his own ship.

[ "What about them?"]

"...can't say I recognize 'em, neither. Seems like there's an actual effort being made to investigate what happened here."

And it was right about then, that the other ship had landed. Figures who were clearly militaristic rushing out as the ramp lowered, and they were heading towards...-what the hell, they're going towards HIS ship?!?

"What in the-- what are they doing, going towards my ship?" He was getting ready to throw down with these strangers as they had approached his ship, but Gen spoke up before he could start marching over.

["If they are with you say so if not let's go for the caves military will just make a mess of this whole damn thing."]

He came to a halt, glancing back towards her. With a couple of looks between the figures in the distance, and the woman right next to him, he let out a sigh. "Well I certainly don't know 'em, but we should get a move on. They seem like the type to blast first, ask questions later. Though if they tamper with my ship in any way, I will be handling them personally."

With that, he extended an arm out, motioning for the other to take the lead towards the caves, before following her.

As for Hetton Vemec Hetton Vemec and his men, it was pretty clear that the ship had arrived after everything had gone down. The ramp was up and the ship was locked, though it didn't appear like there was anybody inside.

Silence. Not just from the raided settlement but from the other activity that the Endymin's sensors were detecting as the planet grew from orb to plane. Bad sign, pointing either to some kind of interference or local conditions or everyone present being a scavenger or complicit. Complicity wasn't something she liked to dwell on, but it did speak to the risk to her people and the likelihood of finding survivors. If whoever had done this was still active around here...

"Helm, I'd like us to take up a holding pattern over the settlement. Let's get deeper scans and prepare to send down medic droids and unarmed seeker probes."

The frigate settled into a slow circle one kilometre up. It would be visible to anyone here; so would the flurry of droids descending on repulsors.

The marines encircled the ship looking for any clues, and Lieutenant Kaines started to inspect it. As he did that Hetton, came down from the ship, and looked at himself, and said Lieutenant Kaines, over here." The man walked over and asked "What can you see, Ensign?" A small grin, concealed by his helmet, and he replied "The engines are still warm,, the ships not been here long, which means, it came after the colony went silent." He nodded, and gave a order, "Set your blasters to stun, their are non combatants in the area!" This order was given quite loud, so that who ever owned the ship might hear them. This was not a mission to attack who was here, but find out what had happened to this friendly colony. The Diarchy trade with others, even if it was just so they get in with people. So their good name could be enhanced, and get tip bits if info from them. Also if things went haywire, they see if they could help.

Not long after the order, and the men spread out, to look for clues. They soon saw signs of struggle, blood stains on the walls, but no corpses, he pondered what had happened, possibly slavers, taken them., he thought to himself. He knew it was now a search for those that hid, this come be dangerous, as they may reacted badly to them, thinking they are who ever attacked them, had come back for seconds.

As they began the search of the place, another ship came down, and broadcast a message, offering humanitarian aid, he looked at Lieutenant Kaines, and he gave a single to find cover and hide, until the threat could assessed. This could be a trap. He found himself in an empty house, with another marine. They now all switch channels to a secure, one with Lieutenant Kaines , asking who can see what. As they wait to asses what is going on.

Mercy glanced around and she noticed some of the same things the other two women had. Things were clean, spotless, as if no time had passed here at all. She even saw a cup of coffee, the steam still curling up from the lid.

It was some sort of madness.

"As if time was frozen." Mercy said quietly while walking over the panel with the coffee. Just as she suspected.

She picked up a donut from behind the cup and looked at it triumphantly. It wasn't immediately clear what the point of that was, until Mercy did the one thing people certainly shouldn't do in a creepy abandoned facility.

The donut was promptly devoured.

"Damn, yeah, this is good..." Mercy muttered between munches, smacking her lips with joy as she ripped through the chunky donut like it was nothing at all.

"That definitely tasted fresh, ladies. As if it was just left a moment ago."

Which was a curious thing indeed.

"Any one of you able to slice into the system, see if we can get some camera footage?
"
