  • Age: Approximately 187 standard years
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-Force User
  • Species: Vintian
  • Appearance: At first glance, the individual known as Gneiss appears to be nothing more than an unremarkable, waist-high slab of dark, weathered stone - jagged, flaked, and layered with sediment-like striations. Their surface is asymmetrical, with one side smoother and slightly concave, as though worn by centuries of environmental erosion.

Upon closer inspection, subtle signs of life emerge: faint, rhythmic shifts in the alignment of crystalline plates; nearly imperceptible flexing along fracture lines; and occasional glimmers of mineral veins beneath the outer shell. Gneiss has never been seen to move. Under direct observation they are completely inert, indistinguishable from a natural stone formation. Yet whenever they are left unobserved, they are consistently found repositioned - always precisely where they need to be, as though they had never occupied any other place at all.

During periods of heightened activity, fine seams across their body emit a dim amber glow, indicating internal restructuring. When magnetically sealed, their outer layers compress into a hardened, near-impenetrable configuration capable of deflecting small-arms fire. Gneiss does not wear clothing or equipment externally; all modifications are internalized or magnetically adhered beneath layered mineral plates.

  • Name: Gneiss - Alias: Cairn
  • Loyalties: The Kainate
  • Wealth: Gneiss possesses no conventional wealth. Their "value" is stored in embedded data vaults and encrypted intelligence caches. Through Kainate provisioning, they has access to:
    • Discreet transport networks
    • Proxy financial accounts under shell identities
    • Resource requisition through Saaraishash intermediaries
  • Notable Possessions:
    • Subdermal Data Lattice: Crystalline memory matrix capable of storing centuries of encrypted intelligence
    • Mag-Seal Compression Core: Allows full-body magnetic locking, dramatically increasing durability
    • Passive Sensor Mesh: Detects vibrations, thermal fluctuations, and electromagnetic disturbances
    • Embedded Micro-Relay Node: Enables burst transmission of data across secured Kainate channels
    • Fragment Vaults: Internal compartments containing coded shards used for dead-drop communication
  • Skills:
    • Long-term infiltration
    • Counter-surveillance through environmental mimicry
    • Cryptographic data storage and retrieval
    • Geological and structural analysis
    • Navigation and piloting assistance
    • Dead-drop intelligence operations
  • Languages:
    • Galactic Basic (comprehension via vibrational translation)
    • Vintian language (resonance-based communication)
    • Binary (interpreted through signal vibration patterns)
    • Select Sith cipher dialects (encoded within crystalline memory structures)
  • Personality: Gneiss embodies patience to a degree that most sentient beings would find incomprehensible. Time, to them, is not measured in moments or missions, but in accumulations - of data, of patterns, of pressure slowly applied until outcomes become inevitable. They do not hurry, because they do not need to. Given sufficient time, all things reveal themselves, and Gneiss is content to wait until they do.

They are profoundly silent - not merely in speech, but in presence. Even when actively engaged in an operation, Gneiss projects an absence rather than an identity. They do not assert themselves into a situation; they allow the situation to settle around them, unnoticed and unquestioned. This makes them uniquely effective in infiltration, but also deeply unsettling to those few who become aware of them. There is no sense of "being watched" - only the creeping realization that something has always been there.

Communication with Gneiss is sparse and deliberate. When they do speak, typically through translated vibration or transmitted signal, they convey only what is necessary, stripped of embellishment or emotion. Their responses often come after long pauses, not due to hesitation, but because they prioritize precision over immediacy. To Gneiss, speaking prematurely is equivalent to acting without certainty.

Unlike more aggressive operatives within the Kainate, Gneiss does not take satisfaction in domination or destruction. Instead, they align with a quieter interpretation of Carnifex's doctrine: control through inevitability. They observe systems - social, political, structural - and identify the stress points within them. They do not break them directly. They wait until they fracture under their own weight, ensuring that when they do, the outcome benefits the Kainate.

There is, however, a form of curiosity within Gneiss, though it is entirely analytical. They study behavior the way a geologist studies strata: layers built over time, each revealing pressures, events, and hidden weaknesses. They do not empathize, but they understand patterns of emotion well enough to predict them. To Gneiss, individuals are less important than the structures they belong to, and it is those structures that they ultimately seek to map and exploit.

Their loyalty to Darth Carnifex is absolute, but not emotional. They do not revere him in the way other servants might. Instead, they recognize in him a force analogous to geological transformation - an entity that reshapes the galaxy through pressure, will, and time. To serve Carnifex is, in Gneiss's perception, to align with the natural direction of that transformation.

Perhaps most unnerving is Gneiss's relationship with presence and absence. They do not behave as though they travel from one place to another. Rather, they treat position as a matter of necessity. If they are required somewhere, they will be there - whether or not anyone witnesses how. This gives them an almost mythic reputation among those few who have encountered them: not as a moving entity, but as a constant, something that simply manifests where it must.

  • Weapon of Choice: Gneiss has no means with which to wield conventionally weapons, instead they:
    • Are primarily unarmed; uses its own mass and density as a weapon
    • Can magnetically anchor itself and resist displacement
    • Utilize environmental manipulation (collapsing structures, blocking passageways)
  • Combat Function: Gneiss is not a frontline combatant. Instead, it functions as:
    • A living bunker or anchor point
    • A survivability asset in hostile environments
    • A last-resort obstacle, capable of sealing corridors or absorbing fire
  • Force Abilities (Force Users Only): N/A

  • Perfect Inconspicuity: Near-perfect infiltration capability by mimicking inert geological formations
  • Geological Endurance: Exceptional durability, especially when magnetically sealed
  • Low Signature: Minimal presence in the Force, making detection by Force-users extremely difficult
  • Absolute Patience: Capable of maintaining operational cover for decades without movement

  • Inertial Limitation: Extremely slow movement; cannot react quickly to sudden threats
  • Minimal Offense: Limited offensive capability; relies on environment or allies for lethality
  • Delayed Communication: Communication is slow and sometimes impractical in fast-paced operations
  • Recrystallization Vulnerability: Vulnerable during periodical cycles of structural instability

Gneiss was not born in any conventional sense, but awakened - their consciousness coalescing within a fractured Vintian mass deep beneath the crust of an unremarkable Outer Rim world. For decades they remained in a dormant state, their awareness flickering in and out as tectonic pressures shaped their form. When at last they stabilized into a coherent being, Gneiss did not emerge with instinct or hunger, but with perception. They observed the slow movement of stone, the subtle shifts in stress and fracture, and learned that existence itself was a matter of pressure resolving into form.

Their first contact with the wider galaxy came not through exploration, but intrusion. A corporate mining operation breached the strata that housed them, fracturing the chamber in which they had taken shape. Gneiss did not resist. Instead, they observed - recording the patterns of movement, sound, and intent displayed by the organic beings around them. When the miners left for a rotation cycle, Gneiss was no longer where they had been unearthed. Days later, they were found embedded within a load of extracted rock, already adapting to concealment among the material being transported off-world.

For years afterward, Gneiss drifted through trade routes and industrial zones, unnoticed and unremarked upon. They passed from cargo holds to construction sites, from asteroid processing facilities to planetary stockyards, always still when seen, always elsewhere when not. In this time, they developed their fundamental method: to exist as environment, not intruder. They learned the rhythms of sentient behavior, the blind spots in perception, and the simple truth that most beings only see what they expect to see. Gneiss became a constant within systems that never realized they had been infiltrated.

Their eventual discovery by the Kainate came when a Threxill Coreworks survey team, cataloging anomalous material patterns within a logistics chain, identified inconsistencies that could not be explained by natural processes. When Kainate operatives attempted to isolate the anomaly, they found that it could not be contained in any conventional sense. It was already elsewhere - within their own perimeter, observing them in turn. Rather than attempt destruction, the Kainate made contact.

Gneiss did not resist recruitment, nor did they submit in any traditional sense. In Darth Carnifex, Gneiss recognized something familiar: a force that reshaped its surroundings not through haste, but through sustained pressure and inevitability. Their integration into the Kainate was seamless. They required no indoctrination, no augmentation, no reconditioning. They simply began to operate within the network, embedding themselves across worlds, installations, and corridors of power, gathering information that no conventional agent could obtain.

Since that time, Gneiss has become something closer to a distributed presence than an individual operative. They have been recorded - though never observed in motion - within palace courtyards, starport loading bays, warship hull interiors, and even the foundations of secure facilities. Reports of their presence are often contradictory, placing them in multiple locations across vast distances with no clear explanation. Within the Kainate, this is not questioned. Gneiss is not tracked in the traditional sense. Wherever observation is required, wherever patience will yield advantage, Gneiss is assumed to already be there - waiting, recording, and ensuring that when the time comes, nothing of value has gone unseen.
