SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Modular Design: The MDS is designed with customization and modularity in mind. Although one does not necessarily think about the deck plate within a vessel when it comes to the aforementioned tenants of design, the MDS allows for such personalization as hidden ‘cistern’ style compartments, modular chases for power and communication conduit/cabling, as well as a shielded housing for magnetic and electrical nodes to facilitate advanced functions without suffering either internal or external interference.
  • Emergency Magnetic Field Projection: The hazards of void travel are constant, with the foremost of such hazards being the significant risk of being vented out into the unforgiving vacuum of space. While most experienced spacers would not be found dead without a pair of magnetic boots so as to secure themselves aboard the metallic decking of a ship in the event of a containment breach, not all who venture amongst the stars are so prepared for such an event. The MDS possesses an intricate and comprehensive dedicated damage control mesh system which synchronizes with the sensors of its host ship and works in tandem with other similarly functioning subsystems. In such a case wherein a ship is encountering heightened levels of damage, the MDS possesses the function of activating an emergency magnetic field within specific compartments as a ‘last resort’ countermeasure to prevent instantaneous venting upon sudden decompression. The magnetic field is strong enough to attract any magnetic materials on a sentient’s person, without posing a structural risk to standard metallic elements within ship superstructures. The ideal result is that a crewman/passenger is saved from being suddenly vented into space long enough for the ship’s emergency containment fields to discharge and seal any breaches.
  • Polarity Inversion: As a counter-feature to the above described magnetic node system, the MDS also possesses a robust ‘polarity inversion’ system which runs via shielded chases alongside the magnetic mesh system. The purpose of this is to address the ever-present risk of boarding actions on the part of pirates and hostile forces who, as previously noted, wear equipment meant to fasten themselves to metallic deck plating. This function allows for the command staff within the bridge and engineering decks of the ship to segment compartments of the ship to emit reverse-polarity fields in those sections. The result of this field is the active destabilization of magnetic fields within the area, rendering magnetic boots and similarly adhesive equipment completely useless. This would allow for the tactical use of containment and venting techniques to repel boarders.

  • +Durable & Functional: Despite the advanced functionality of the MDS, this is all provided without sacrificing the durability one would expect from a traditional decking system often expected within military vessels, as well as capable of providing an understated allure for civilian star liners.
WEAKNESSES
  • -Internal Maintenance: While the modularity of the MDS’s design is an advantage in favor of its use, one could say the ability to install subdermal chases and compartments is a requirement to provide maintenance shafts so as to service and repair the sensitive systems beneath it. Status indicators and sensors are provided to make it easier to localize sections requiring such service, yet the fact remains such maintenance needs exist in lieu of simple floor paneling present in most starships.
  • -Expensive: Although GDI possesses the ability to mass produce the MDS, the fact remains that it is vastly more expensive compared to traditional ‘dummy’ deck paneling.
  • -Heavy: Given the density of components and materials required for this decking system to function properly, it should come as no surprise that the MDS is heavier than your traditional deck system. While this alone would not prohibit its use in smaller craft such as freighters or corvettes, it should still be taken into consideration and balanced when outfitting such vessels with weaponry and other systems.
DESCRIPTION
In the midst of the company’s development of weapon systems and engineering technology, it soon became apparent that very few companies have given attention to deck system and bulkhead technology - with the same standard means and methods being employed today as they had been centuries prior. As GDI’s engineers set about imaging what could be done to revolutionize the concept, news reports soon permeated the galaxy’s news outlets regarding an increase in pirate activity and star-borne marauders. This sparked inspiration within their collective mindset into the development of both an offensive and defense means of deterring boarding actions, as well as preserving life during high-intensity situations.

It was with these two core principles in mind that the Guardian Defense Engineering Modular Deck System was developed. From the modularity it possesses, the increased storage capacity it provides, and the unique magnetic/reverse polarity technology integrated within it, the MDS is the ideal solution for ship designers and developers who wish to integrate an understated means of addressing the increase of interstellar piracy and mayhem.

Due to the highly specialized nature of this deck system, the cost associated with its acquisition and installation does render it infeasible for truly ‘cost effective’ (read: cheap) space vessels. Yet, for those who are willing to spend a little extra for the sake of the preservation of life, can one really put a price tag on it?
