DESCRIPTION
After their defeat at the Battle of Jakku, the remnants of the Galactic Empire that were fervently loyal to Palpatine’s dream fled towards the Unknown Regions, forging a successor state that would later come to be known as the First Order. It was there, across the Galactic Frontier, that these Imperial Castoffs began their production of massive warships from newly constructed shipyards and secret facilities. Having taken Structural and Psychological inspiration from the Venator and Imperial - Class Star Destroyers, but lacking the vast wealth of resources of the Old Empire, the burgeoning Military Junta was unable to build a great quantity of these warships; until they established themselves as a Galactic Superpower. In the wake of the New Republic’s tragic demise during the Starkiller Incident, more and more of these Battlecruisers began filling the stars, as swathes of star systems swore their fealty to the First Order.

With these new sectors under their direct control, vast hoards of resources began pouring into their various stockpiles, resulting in the construction of larger and larger warships.

It was unclear what transpired in the years between the Starkiller Incident and the Four-Hundred Years Darkness, but when the light of civilization began to wane - so too did the First Order’s grip on the galaxy. From the mouths of defectors and captives alike, it was said that the Imperial successor state found itself relatively unaffected by the Gulag Plague. Whether or not these stories were true, or mere products of fabricated propaganda was unclear, but what was considered fact - was they believed themselves first among equals; donning the nomenclature of First Imperials. With the resurgence of this reformed successor state, warships bearing the crimson maw began to populate the void once more - including the ship that’d become to be known as Guerdon.

The ‘Eidolon’ sailed the stars under the banner of the First Order, slaying the enemies of the Supreme Leader wherever it went. As time marched ever forward and successor warships began to populate the stars, they were incapable of meeting the original design’s majesty amongst the stars. Thus, the First Imperials ensured to populate their armada with this venerable design to stake their mighty claim on the galaxy. It was in this state, that the ‘Eidolon’ found itself Captained by the newly inducted Admiral Astarii Saren, and placed at the Vanguard of the First Order’s retaliatory strike against the Ssi-Ruuvi Imperium. For much of the Great Galactic War, the former Alliance Fleet Admiral threw the warship through its paces; before returning to the Eastern Front.

When the Great Galactic War ended, and the Galactic Alliance crumbled, the ‘Eidolon’ was taken from the Admiral - who in turn lost faith with the direction that the First Order was heading down. During her second defection and subsequent admission into the Golden Company, the warship was given to a new master and found itself trapped in the Ison Corridor during the Ssi-Ruuvi counterattack. Soon after the First Imperial regime collapsed, and the Gilded Mercenaries sacked the sundered bastion, the ‘Eidolon’ found itself taken as a trophy by the Scions of Thyrsus; a worthy prize for a broken contract.

As the Resurgent was taken into the Sellsword’s custody, they began to make improvements to the Battlecruiser -- that nearly tore the warship down to its skeletal components. When they reached the structural core of the vessel, the Thyrsians began applying their technological acumen and advances into every conceivable layer of the warship’s refit. They first began with the inclusion of extremely prototypical sciences which revolved around the advancements of their droid technology; resulting in the creation of their first artificial intelligence. This mechanical construct was capable of utilizing the Thyrsian’s robotic framework to a greater effect than the various enslaved droid brains; meaning that this nameless being could effectively operate the Battlecruiser with a Fifth of the organic crew complement.

In addition to the various network and structural upgrades that were made, the ‘Eidolon’ found its vast array of weapons and defensive systems entirely refurbished with those of Thyrsian design. Solarized weapons, reactors, and various enormous capacitors were stitched into the battlecruiser’s hull - replacing much of the starship’s purpose as a hybrid fleet carrier with extensive banks of solarized and plasmatic-based weapons. While the Resurgent Battlecruiser was deadly in its own right, with the mysteries of the Force blended into their technologies, it became all the more deadly with the inclusion of the Thyrsian’s arcane solarized weapons arrays.

However, those weren’t the only advancements that were implemented into the ‘Eidolon’s overhaul and refit. With their recent discovery of an ancient evolution in metallurgy; known as Laminanium, the Thyrsian Enclave saw fit to outfit their warship with a self-repairing alloy that was further enhanced by animated metal. These ancient and seemingly arcane substances would ensure that the structural integrity of the Thyrsian Battlecruiser would remain intact during combat; at least until the animated metal sealant was utterly expended. As well as the inclusion of 'regenerative hull tissues,' the multiple layers of deflector shielding were expanded by a Kyber Crystal-enhanced Xythan Force Shield; which in itself was an advanced variant of the molecular shielding. With that shield variant in place, the primary barrier would be capable of not only absorbing the energy of a plasmatic weapon but returning the discharge back from whence it came.

When the overhaul and refit were complete, the ‘Eidolon’ was bequeathed a new name to better fit the ship’s new masters. Thus, the ‘Guerdon’ was born and sworn into the service of both Khonsu Amon, and the Thychani Trierarch - Astarii Saren.

[member="Khonsu Amon"], I'd recommend hyperlinking some of the tech subs that you've mentioned within the sub itself (The Eos Sustained Solar Lance, etc).

It's unlikely that I'll ever be able to give clear black and white answers on something as subjective as "what conforms to the general idea of Star Wars", but I think that this is one of those areas where this use of nanotechnology does not conform to the general idea of Star Wars.

Allow me to elaborate.

in your defense, there are similar repair/manufacturing nanotechnologies in Star Wars. The most obvious example is the NM-K reconstitutor. A more obscure example might be the vague "nanotechnology" used by Imperial Army regiments to manufacture "precise spare parts" (Imperial Sourcebook, pg. 93). In these examples though, this seems to be pretty limited manufacture in terms of physical output and focused on making precise components or changes. I do not know of any nanotechnology examples in Star Wars which work on anything greater than person-sized components or objects.

This means that the use of nanotechnology in this submission appears to be the opposite of how manufacturing nanotechnology has thus far been portrayed in Star Wars. Despite this page being largely written with nanotechnologies current limitations, I think it is probably a good rough guide as to the limitations of using nanotechnology in a Star Wars context.

I'm going to ask you to modify this based on that input. As alternative, you want to consider using Laminanium, which may give you a very similar effect as to how it's currently written.

[member="Gir Quee"] - Those weapons, as I have with the last dozen submissions put into the fold over the last few weeks, have been linked in the submission under primary sources. If they are needed to be linked again, it might be worthwhile to update the template to reflect that new decision and an announcement made thereafter to ensure everyone's on the same page.

Regarding your issue with Nanotechnology, and how it's presented in my submission, you've linked me to a page that's last been updated in 2004 - fifteen years ago from the present date. A lot has happened since then, especially regarding our understanding of the known universe and its resulting effects on science/speculative-fiction, therefore using it as a justification to "soft-cap" nanotechnology isn't the best idea in my eyes. While I appreciated the read, I do believe that it's more of a historic opinion piece rather than anything else.

As stated in the linked "Self-Repairing Nanotechnology" page(s) you'll note the choice of wording - Canon: 'Nanotechnology was technology nanoscopic in size. Some examples in the galaxy included nano-droids and nanoexplosives." Legends: 'Nanotechnology was technology that operated on a nano scale. Typically molecular in size and nature, nanotechnology encompasses a great deal of technology, including nanogene droids, nano-droids and nanoviruses." If the conventional idea behind nanotechnology wasn't suited for one person's interpretation of Star Wars, the folks at Lucasfilm and Disney should be careful about their selective vocabulary. Through the use of Including, rather than Limited too - they've left the door open for fresh blood to take over and weave it into the narrative. Just in case it was missed, I've highlighted the sections from the two Wookieepedia pages to showcase my point.
  • We've got Nanobots that can devour organic material and turn it into metal - such as the nanogene spores. (Nanogene link, Nanogene Spore link.)
  • We've got Nanobots who can track people through unspecified parameters across unspecified distances; as well as being able to act as ingestable explosives. The link's to those you've already provided and I believe would be redundant to link again at this juncture.
  • We've got Wat Tambor developing a type of nanotechnology that allowed him to fuse an artificial computer intelligence into a fungus citadel. (Mazariyan link, Wat Tambor link.)
There's doubtlessly going to be more and more applications incorporated into Star Wars in the coming years; especially now that the timeline's gone down a dark path of infusing starships with lightsabre crystals, and the harvesting of a star's dark-matter quintessence to fire planet-shattering beams that could be seen across the galaxy.

As for Laminanium? It was something I considered at first but wanted to see what the stance would be on the inclusion of nanotechnology; since it was unrestricted and there was mention of using them for warships, etc. However, as I feel these self-repairing nanobots would be better suited to having a submission of their own, as I can use them for multiple purposes and other submissions - I'll replace it and make sure to link the YVH-1's as well - since they further expand on the alloy's regenerating properties.

It's been in the template now for a while:

Armament: (You may provide your armament in list format and must provide your vessel an Armament Rating. (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, Moderate, High, Very High, Extreme. Armament Ratings are scaled in relation to the class of ship, meaning a Starfighter will not equate to a Destroyer. For example an average 900m ship will outgun an average 600m ship. Armament Ratings provide only basic weaponry unless the ship also has a description of weapons. Please link to all Factory Submissions used. Links: Starship Weapons, Approved Technology)

We're not likely to agree on the nanotechnology issue any time soon now, and that's fine.

I've roleplayed on a now defunct Star Wars board (that several others here have roleplayed at as well) where there were no restrictions on nanotechnology, and one writer quickly used it in many his tech/ship submissions. It very quickly took away the traditional Star Wars feel to the place. I don't want to see that happen here. Reoccurring issues like that here on this board itself have also caused nanotechnology to be banned a short time after not being banned.

I'm really hoping this won't be a reoccurring event, because I do like giving people freedom with their subs, but that freedom isn't going to be at the cost of ruining the ambient feel for the majority of the board's writers. Please keep the use of nanotechnology relatively conservative and close to canon examples, or if you want to be more experimental and far-reaching then what's in canon already, keep it on a small production/size scale.

[member="Gir Quee"] - I know it's been there, that's why I've been linking my weapon systems in the primary sources. However, what I'm taking issue with - is the sudden desire from yourself to nitpick this submission, when I've done the same thing on a dozen submissions you've approved already. They're still linked as the template requests, so I do not see the issue. The Solarized Lances are the only two factory submissions used and they are linked. The rest of the listed armament are canon articles which are not required to be linked.

I understand your reasoning behind your stance on Nanotech, but you have to remember that this is Chaos. We have people that can rip holes in time and space and not bat an eye. We have people that utilize the Force improperly because their linked Wookieepedia article(s) don't say that it can't be utilized like that. We have people that are able to survive the molecular disintegration from a disruptor, simply because they don't want to die. No offense, but you're trying to save a sinking ship with nothing more than cupped hands, lol. When I go about making my nanotechnology, I'll be referring to the standardized ruleset written by you and your team in terms of production - which means it'll be between minor or unique. If you're wanting to apply that restriction to me and me alone - that it should be kept "small" - then we're going to have a bit more justification as that's extremely unfair and I want a valid reasoning.

It was more of a casual observation than a nitpick. If I were going to nitpick, I could go into how this ship is technically unbalanced by the spreadsheet. I could probably dive in and find some more issues, I haven't, and that's not my intent.

I warned everyone in the announcement when Nanotechnology was unbanned again that I expect it to follow the concept of fitting into the established Star Wars universe. That's already a Factory Rule. That's a general issue that can easily become a problem for something as open-ended as nanotechnology or alchemy. The Factorty staff (RPJs and FJs) have been specifically instructed to watch out for this issue and comment on it when the announcement was first made. One of them actually pointed me to this submission for my take on it. Hence why I'm commenting here.

Let's be clear.

There are two possible avenues for how this will pan out if you push the envelope and do not heed Factory staff commentary.

1) You can get a ban (temporary or permanent) from the Factory.
2) Nanotech goes back to being a banned material (This is more likely if more people are having an issue with it than just you).

[member="Gir Quee"] - It's hard to tell the difference with you in regards to casual observations and nitpicks, if we're being honest. However, as you're asking me to do what's already been done - I don't really see a need to add redundant links when they're already linked in the submission. If that's not good enough for you, please let me know and I'll be putting in a request to drag out my other submissions - as I'm a big fan of consistency, and get mildly irritated when things aren't consistent.

When it comes to the ratings? I think there's more than a few critical weaknesses I've added that aren't "fluff" that'd bring the submission into balance. If you don't agree, then you're welcome to let me know and I'll devise more to compensate.

As I explained in a previous post in this thread, the Wookieepedia linked articles mention that Nanotechnology covers a broad range of technology. So, having it be in keeping with the Star Wars mythos is of little issue, especially for someone like me. It's part of the reason why I removed Nanotechnology entirely from this submission, so I can make an entirely new submission regarding that technology - fleshing it out as best to my knowledge and to ensure it's balanced to the best of my abilities.

Since Nanotech is no longer an issue when regarding this submission, could that line of discussion move towards a separate thread or DM's here on Chaos or over Discord?

I think I've made my viewpoints quite clear. If you want to continue a discussion in the Factory discussion, that's fine.

I'll be approving this sub shortly.

Hey, so this is a great and well written submission. For the most part everything looks okay to me, but there is one issue. You've listed your ship's length as being:

3,516 Metres.

And it's Hangar Space as being:

Hangar Space:
Very Low Rating - Nine Squadrons in Modular Deployment Racks.

For your ship to have nine (9) squadrons at the Very Low rating, your ship would need to be at least 5000 meters long. For the ship's current dimensions, the maximum number of squadrons it could have at the Very Low rating is five (5). So to fix this problem, you have a couple of options. First, you could increase the ship's length to 5000 meters. Or you could increase the Hangar Space rating to Low and have eight (8) squadrons.

I actually have your ship balancing as being one (1) rating underpowered anyway so you could do this without making any other modifications to the ship's rating and I would be happy to approve it.

Please let me know what you decide to do/make the necessary edits and tag me here when you're done. Otherwise, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know either here or via PM's. Thanks!

LT-137 LT-137

Beltran Rarr Beltran Rarr - I think you're looking at the wrong template, as per the Battlecruiser entry - Warships over 3,500 Metres have a Squadron Count of 9 at Very Low. If I upgraded its size to 5,000 Metres, the Very Low count would be 12 Squadrons. I've included a pair of screenshots below for comparison convenience.

d6e02bc8a3dcd8c605c5fc6682f3ba43.png

So, I won't be increasing the dimensions as I don't have to in order to be in compliance with the new hangar standards - but as I'm one rating underpowered I've increased the Speed rating from Low to Average.

Thanks for catching that! :)
