Freedom for an Experiment (Circe)

Dreya Shynn

I think about this for a moment. I.....I have no spirit? Does that mean I have no.....soul? I am troubled by the thought. Circe strokes my left wing. This calms me a bit, but still I am bothered.

"No no... You misinterpret me, Dreya. I don't want you to do that. I merely mean you don't have a level of control over the element of the soul. Not yet. Either you weren't created to, you failed to, or you weren't trained to. But I can teach you how... if you want."

She smiled, running her hands over the girl's wings. "Would you like to learn?"

I nod. "I don't know why Creator called me a failure. I am willing to learn what you can teach me," I smile at Circe.

"Your creator is... An intriguing man, to say the least. In some cases, he cares greatly about how people feel. In others, he's very ruthless. But I view all experiments in my care as my children. Never believe that I am going to neglect you."

She smiled, continuing to embrace the angelic experiment as she smiled. "You have an adopted sister, Irene, and both a brother and sister - Darren and Saera. My kids are diverse." She smiled, giving a soft sigh.

"Well, would you like to begin?"

My eyes brighten with awe. I have siblings? This thought makes a warmth spread through my chest. I nod to Circe's question. "Teach me of the spirit, Mother," I say.

Closing her eyes, she got on her knees behind Dreya, gently pressing down on the experiment's wings as to get her to sit down. "Cross your legs. Close your eyes and focus. Let your mind become in tune with your spirit. You have one - every living entity has one. Sense it. Once you can sense the spirit within you, you will be ready to manipulate it."

Silently, I obey. I feel nothing at first. Just the normality of my being. And then, it is there. An inner feeling, a centered feeling. It is, in a way, not a feeling of my physical body. Yes. It must be my spirit. "I....I think I found it," I say to Circe.

"Good. Now that you can sense your soul, I want you to focus on my soul. Search for it as you would your own soul. Once you sense it, we're going to perform basic manipulation of this particular element. We can drain either life energy or Force energy away. It all depends on what you want to do."

Indeed it did.

I nod. Slowly, I reach out with my thoughts. I can now sense Circe's being. It takes some effort, but I manage to feel inside her. I can feel her heartbeat as if it is my own, the same with her breath. And there, I feel deeper. Her soul is there, centered just like mine. I remember Circe saying that we could either steal life or Force power from one another. Since I have already found her soul, I decide to take a bit of life. I concentrate on taking just the tiniest piece from her soul. I feel it leave her, and join with my own. The sensation sends a shudder through me.

"And now you understand. I know it has likely taken you a long time to experience this, but I am proud that you now have access to the fifth element. Feel free to take some more - of my soul and of my Force energy. Both are perfectly alright for you to touch, as long as you stop when I give you permission. I don't wish to punish my daughter." She ran a hand through the young woman's hair. "Perhaps we can adequately give you the abilities to shape the fifth element sooner rather than later."

I shake my head. "If it's alright with you, I don't want to take any more of your soul..." I say, coming back to myself. It feels...strange to me, to be in the body of another. To be able to take from their soul... It bothers me.

"Well, you're going to need to practice in order to become capable of adequately shaping the fifth element the same way as the others. But no reason to use me... Let's try something a little bit smaller." And by smaller, she meant a Kubaza Beetle. Slowly lowered to the ground, the vicious-looking bug was brought towards the experiment. "Alright... Now I want you to quickly drain the life and Force energy from this kubaza beetle. If you don't drain it fast enough, the creature will kill itself and blow up, covering you with its sticky remains. It won't harm you or anything, but it'll be a pain to get out."

I suck in my breath as the creature comes forward. Closing my eyes, I push my senses to surge outward until they feel the life of the beetle. I begin drawing it in like a straw sucking up water. By the time the creature is half-way toward me, it is already dead. I open my eyes and look at it. I just killed something. It has been so long since I've killed something...

"It's okay, Dreya. It was only an insect. It had no soul, felt no pain - it was like draining the life of a single cell." She smiled, embracing her daughter from behind. "This power you have is something you need to be very careful using. While you can easily shape the other elements without trouble, shaping with this fifth element is dangerous. Very dangerous. And people - including you - can get hurt. So you need to practice a lot more before putting it into your normal shaping routine."

Smiling, she gave the shaper she had adopted as her own a motherly kiss on the cheek. "Don't worry about it, sweetie. Training will get you prepared for usage of these abilities."

I smile at Circe. "Thank you for being so kind to me. It's just been a while since I've killed. My Creator had me kill many things during my training."

"Killing is important. Without killing, you will never learn how to harness your soul-manipulating abilities. But I'm not going to have you kill any sentient beings. That would be against my way of doing things." She paused, smiling. "You're my daughter. I'm not going to do any harm to you - that would go against everything motherhood stands for."

And the sad irony was, it was true.

I nod. "Yes mother." I look at her expectantly. "What should I do next?"

"Let's wrap things up for the time being, darling. We need to hit the sack. There's a lot to do tomorrow, and the more assistance I can get from you, the better. Trust me on that." Circe moved to give her daughter another hug, feeling over her back happily as she enjoyed the company of a daughter.

Her daughter.
