Jett preferred easy jobs. No strings. No hassle. Actually, scratch that - Jett didn't prefer easy jobs. She preferred
easy gigs. It was better to be a body for a few days than have your background checked, credentials questioned, or
worse yet, sit down and commit yourself to a field that - in some shape or another - would form a cornerstone of your identity, maybe even your
whole identity to some people.
Oh, now she was just spiralling. That's what happened when you spent too much time thinking.
But she was anxious.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid!" She admonished herself.
Clearly someone overheard her, because they gave Jett an odd look and then shuffled along, intent on putting as much distance between them and her as they could.
That was fine. The distance was helpful.
Because Jett accepted a very stupid gig. One where she had to break the law.
Still, Jett had been around the block enough times that she mostly believed she knew what she was doing. It was easy enough to swipe that badge from an employee while they flirted on their datapad (she couldn't help but peek at their screen - their game sucked) during a lunch break.
No uniform? No problem.
"Er, eh," she blushed, playing the stupid girl routine (not far from the truth).
"I... Listen, I got a little drunk last night and had to crash at a friend's place. I woke up late and--"
The guard stopped her there. That was good enough for him to press the button and let her through the checkpoint.
Staff only.
She looked down at her badge again.
'I guess that makes me staff,' she mused.
Jett slipped through the door, entering a lone hallway devoid of people or things. Liminal in a boring rather than creepy sort of way. To her, anyway. She took a left, and sure enough found the locker room just as promised. After sifting through a few of them, she found a uniform that mostly fit her and put it on.
Then, she gave it all a looksie in the mirror. Bleh. It just felt wrong to dress as an authority officer. It was as if suddenly she had the personality of tepid water. Actually, Jett considered that -
'People actually need water.'
She left the locker room and kept walking until she passed through another door, this time entering the main concourse. Ahead was a line where travelers purchased tickets. Well, her badge got her past that long and expensive checkpoint, and the uniform should keep people off her--
'Ah, hell.'
Another officer eyed her from across the way.
'He knows.'
Shit shit shit...
Then Jett saw her. Some nervous woman sitting by herself. She glanced down at the bouncing thigh. Without a better idea, Jett decided playing the role was the best way to blend in. Maybe the other guy wouldn't think twice about it and would move on with his day.
"Hey," she called out, doing her best impression to sound authoritative. Though it sounded over-rehearsed and faux masculine.
"What's the matter, lady, you seem awfully..." Don't say suspicious, don't say suspicious, that's so dumb, don't say--
"Uh... Alone."
'Well, now that just sounds even dumber...'
She glanced over her shoulder. It seemed the real officer got busy harassing someone else. Fuck. Maybe Jett
was cut out for this job.
