    • Pamarthen Crow
    • Crow
  • Designation: Non-Sentient
  • Origins: Pamarthe
  • Average Lifespan: 20 Years
  • Estimated Population: Common
  • Description: Stormcrows were three-legged avians which were black in color and had large, sharp beaks. Their dark plumage was interrupted by random patterns of dark grey which was difficult to see without being up close. These patterns would pulse white as a storm drew near. The pulsing was actually a reaction to cloudburst stone in their gizzards which the crows used to help digest food. They were primarily scavengers but did eat grubs and small crustaceans or seeds.

  • Communication: Caws, Croaks, Can learn a handful of phrases
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: It is believed that seeing a lone crow without a storm on the way was a sign of omens to come. As scavengers they are seen as necessary but also a symbol for death and destruction due to their penchant for leading and chasing storms.
  • General behavior: Stormcrows, as their name suggests, typically congregate in areas that are either going to be hit with a storm or where a storm has passed. The reasoning for this is not entirely understood, but because of this, they have garnered a bad reputation in the superstitions of Pamarthe. They are typically scavengers but feed on everything from seeds to rotting fish. Flocks of the birds can often be seen flying behind moving packs of Pamarthen Lions or around where something has died. Their intelligence makes them very social creatures and trainable. In the early days before com relays could be properly set up it wasn't uncommon for settlers and Stormwardens to use stormcrows and their larger cousins, stormravens with datapads strapped to packs or with written script to deliver messages to distant islands. Stormcrows don't mate for life and have several partners throughout their lives.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Pamarthen Stormcrow was discovered on landfall of the first Pamarthen settlers. They were three-legged creatures which seemed to swarm around their dead as they struggled to survive in the early days of colonization. As settlements began to crop up across the planet they were noted for their glowing patterns. It wasn't until several years later that scholars realized the frequency of the pulsing glowing patterns indicated the distance of a storm. It was for this reason that the crows were adopted by the first Stormwardens, a group of warriors who were one part weather-watchers and one part sheriff or local militia. With the help of the stormcrows and stormravens the Pamarthens were able to develop a system to accurately predict storms of all types on the planet.
