First Steps into Darkness

Bastion of Ren, Virgillia
Kyrel Ren, Overlord of Ren, Steward of the Ren, had taken interest upon the new Praetorian Initiate. Unlike himself who was not brainwashed came late into the Order of Ren. To which of course, couldn't help but feel for the children. But thought it was necessary. In the end, these children wouldn't know the hardships of growing up poor, growing up in a ruined home. Instead, they would be raised as loyal, fearless servants of the Supreme Leader, much like many of his fellow Colleagues were. Kyrel himself found his strength from his past, from losing his friends and the one he loved when serving as a TIE Pilot. To discovering his Mother was a Jedi. His past fed his power, fed the pain that fueled his being.
But with the one known as Marr. She had not known such things, a part of him couldn't help but pity her. But another part envied her for what she had. Feeling that War would soon be on the horizon, the First Order had grown restless. For years all they had known was warfare and conflict. It was all Kyrel knew as the Enforcer of Ren. Now a part of him wanted an enemy to fight, but what was most important was to make sure the young girl would grow as an instrument of the dark side. That who she was now, would be consumed by what was destined before her. And for that she would be trained to embrace the dark side, use it. To kill her enemies, even take enjoyment of it.
He had summoned her, the lightsaber of Jedi Master Zark in his hands, and the blue crystal of the Jedi Archivist he had slain on Lothal, in his pocket. He would begin to teach her the most basic principles of the dark side, history of the Galaxy, and most importantly how to construct a saber. He paced around the main hall, eagerly waiting for her to arrive. As her first steps were about to truly begin.

When she received word of her summons, the youngling was in her new quarters within the Bastion itself. While it was more spacious compared to her room back on the Academy, its expanse also meant that it felt more empty… and just a bit lonelier. In fact, Marriskcal was quite certain that any sound she made in her room would echo. And ended up being proven right when her datapad gave a loud obnoxious beep that startled her. “Stupid thing,” she mumbled, giving a poisonous glare to the offending device even as she walked over to her desk and picked it up.

By now, it was not unusual to the initiate to receive an assignment on a rather frequent basis. It pleased her to know that she was valued, that she made just a tiniest bit of difference to an operation. And while Marriskcal was still feeling worn out from her previous operation on Elrood that was completed just yesterday, she was also unscathed this time. Humming a happy tune that coincided with the music box she had gotten from Bakura, the blonde flopped ungracefully on to her bed while she clicked open the message.

… And immediately shot up once again.

Master Kyrel Ren?!

As Marriskcal could never predict what the mysterious steward wanted when he summoned for them, she quickly gathered her basic complement of weapons and swiftly made her way to the main hall, peeking out from the side of the entrance. She winced inwardly as she saw his dark figure and hoped that she did not keep him waiting for too long. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, the youngling pulled her hair back into a neat tail before she stepped into the hall, her steps measured and her demeanour solemn. “I’ve received your summons, Master Kyrel. Am I to accompany you on a mission?”

Kyrel waited patiently for the girl to arrive when she did. He could tell she was tired of course. For an initiate, she had come back from Elrood. A conquest Kyrel didn't personally participate in, and decided to focus on his studies in the Force. He had removed his mask, the helmet opening with a snap, which allowed him to pull the apparatus up, by both of his fingers. The dark helmet revealing what looked to be a man in his late 20s. His face already showed that of corruption from perhaps months of studying the dark side, if not years. His eyes drifted that from a fiery yellow to a dark color. Kyrel gave the girl a humble smile. Cradling the helmet in his arm as he paced around the girl. As if in thought, before stopping right in front of her.

Feeling rather calm, he spoke. "I have summoned you here because I have noticed a lack in your training. I have sensed things coming, the future is not clear. But I know that you need to be ready. Today I will train you. Your training will encompass many things, most of all I believe it is time for you to build your lightsaber. For that, I have a gift for you." With that, he held out his talon fingers. In it was a blue kyber crystal. The one that he had taken from the Jedi Archivist he had slain on Lothal. He gave her a warm but stern look, and spoke once more. "Tell me what do you know of Kyber Crystals? I will also ask you is what you know of the history of our Order, of the First Order?"

At the sound of the sharp snap, her gaze flickered to its source, her eyes widening as Master Kyrel Ren’s features was unveiled. Marriskcal was not quite sure what to expect, and the tales exchanged between other younglings often remarked that the Steward was either a monster or he was so disfigured by the many campaigns he has partaken in that there was not much left of the person he used to be beneath his helmet. It seemed like hearsays will be hearsays, as the revealed visage of the Master was that of an unharmed older male. The youngling found herself fascinated by his piercing yellow eyes, the most clear sign that that the other has fully embraced the beckoning of the dark side.

I wonder how would I look with eyes of burning amber?

As the dark-haired male paced, taking long slow steps around her, the young initiate tried her best to remain still despite the deep apprehension she felt. It was clear to Marriskcal that the Steward was assessing her, but it also felt a little like what she imagined a wounded animal would feel if they were thrown into a middle of shark-infested waters. Tiny and helpless. It was a feeling she disliked, no matter how true it was. She kept her breathing slow and steady and maintained a neutral mask the best she could when Master Kyrel stopped in front of her.

At his words, the blonde could not help but to flinch. The merest hint that she was lacking in some ways was always cutting. And to think you were elated just moments ago. Despite the familiar feelings of hurt that welled up, Marriskcal savagely suppressed it, her eyes taking on a determined gleam as she met Master Kyrel’s gaze. Her instructors back on Skye had said worse to her, and she had always risen to the occasion. This would be no different. She would just have to train even harder under his guidance and prove to the Steward that she was ready.

While she had hoped to be able to wield a lightsaber she could call her own one day, it was not something that the initiated dared to hope for so soon. As she carefully reached out tentatively to take the living crystal from Master Kyrel, Marriskcal could not help but to find herself concerned. Whatever it was that the older male has sensed must be dire, for the Steward himself to step in to ensure she would be able to endure. “Thank you, Master Kyrel,” she said softly, her eyes admiring the azure lustre of the crystal she held carefully between her palms. But as with the kyber crystal she played with back on Elrood, it remained inert.

At the warm gaze he bestowed, Marriskcal found herself feeling a little less anxious as it meant she was not in any trouble with the other. “I know that a kyber crystal is the heart of every lightsaber, though it is not the only medium that could be used. I also know that some of the First Order’s naval vessels uses them to increase the effectiveness of their lasers.” Perhaps that was not all they could be used for, but they were definitely the most important matters. “I also know that they can mostly be found on planets and moons with cold to frigid temperatures.” Which would also include Tantra, the information she has procured from the official she escorted back on the Elrood assignment. “Also… this crystal that you’ve gifted to me… used to belong to someone else?” She had a growing suspicion that the Steward wanted her to do something with it.

But as for Master Kyrel’s latter question, the young initiate was not quite sure of what sort of answer the other was seeking. A lot of their history was shrouded in mystery and historical accounts… which, unfortunately, is filled with bias and untruths. “I know that our Order of Ren is a refined version based on the Order of the same name that existed before the plague and dark ages that came after it. My knowledge about the history of the First Order is… about the same, that it is based on the original First Order, which came about after the original Galactic Empire fell.

Kyrel couldn't help but let out a light laugh. His appearance was surprising to the young girl as if she thought he would strike her down, for the slightest look. He gave her a kind smile, despite his dark nature, he did have another side he didn't show very often. He felt that perhaps the girl would ease in, and not feel tense as a result. His years since being repaired with new flesh, allowed him to reach what was beyond that of the limitations, he once held of course as a cyborg. He had a much brighter complexion, his eyes not so sunken or so filled with burning rage, his veins not as seen as they were on his skin. He could even say that in fact, he was some sort of yellow-eyed monster.

When she took the crystal, she had answered his questions. The first of which she was partially correct, while the latter of the two she was unaware of. He could not blame her, he had spent years and years digging through archives, before putting all the pieces together, that the stories he heard weren't myth or legend. But was it all true? From old holo recordings to written accounts. He was able to somewhat make out how it came to be. He continued his Fatherly smile as if he was trying to continue his attempts at making her at ease, before speaking.

"You are somewhat correct, Kyber Crystals are often found on most worlds, at least worlds with hearts of Kyber Crystals. But Kyber Crystals are sentient in their own way. If you will they bond through the Force. From a young age, a Jedi picks them as their own, forge their own saber. That crystal I took from the Jedi Archivist on Lothal. You will construct your saber, but as to give its crimson blade. Worthy of a Ren. First, you must bleed it, pour your pain, anger, and hate into it. Through the dark side, one is able to force there will. However I do not believe you possess such emotions yet, you must be broken first. You must learn to harness these emotions towards unlocking the dark side.." He paused for a moment before adding to the latter question he spoke before. "As for the history young one. Long ago, long ago. A similarly named government that had only existed decades ago, the Galactic Republic existed. A man, Sheev Palpatine, who in reality was a Sith Lord named Darth Sidious gained control of the Republic, orchestrated the long war known as the Clone Wars. Seducing Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the dark side, and proclaiming him Darth Vader. The Republic was turned into the first Galactic Empire, the Jedi were destroyed, and for twenty-four years they ruled. Until being destroyed by Vader's own son who redeemed him. Luke Skywalker I believe was his name. With the death of the Emperor, the Imperials fled into the Unknown Regions where they established the first incarnation of the First Order, before being destroyed 40 years after."

He finished by pulling out several holos. Some of which were the Clone Army of the Republic, and the Droid armies fighting on distant worlds with their Jedi Generals, another displayed Imperial Propaganda, Some of which was the Emperor, Darth Vader leading Imperial Stormtroopers, to crush a local rebellion. Displaying what he could of such lost history to her, watching to see her reaction.

The sounds of laughter has her whipping her head up, as if the youngling needed to witness it for herself before believing that the act has happened. Perhaps… Perhaps she has judged Master Kyrel wrongly? Marriskcal has thought him harsh and unforgiving, but it could be just another facet of his personality. It was possible, as she was only ever in his presence whenever they were on assignments. The initiate herself knew she wore a more solemn persona when she was on the field, as compared to when she was in back on the Academy and amongst her brothers and sisters.

Her gaze fell back on the crystal between her hands as the older male mentioned the Jedi Archivist. Marriskcal was not quite sure how to feel about using a kyber crystal that was taken from a heretic. But if she looked at it from another angle, it was in a way, rather poetic in its justice. The azure crystal she held signified that there was one less Jedi in the galaxy, and now that it belonged to her, it would become part of her arsenal and serve to strengthen her.

The youngling nodded to herself as Master Kyrel continued his lesson, bringing up his desire for her to bleed the crystal sometime in the future. Marriskcal agreed with the older male on his assessment. While she loathed Doran Ren and she wanted to hurt and humiliate him, she did not want him dead… well, now that she has calmed down and had some distance from the incident back on Virgillia. The youngling decided she would do some research on her own and check if the archives would contain more information of the bleeding of a crystal. Even if she did not possess enough negative emotions as of yet, she would at least have the knowledge of what it entailed.

The history of the foundation of the First Order was interesting to her, who often found herself confused by the conflicting historical accounts. To her, the people Master Kyrel described were more akin to myths in a fantastical tale. But Marriskcal knew that if the Steward was enlightening her, then it was true that they really existed a long time ago. While she was usually cautious about maintaining a certain distance, the youngling forgot to be cautious about the older male when the holos appeared in his hands. Drawing close, she peered at them, realising that they were very rare and she probably would never get another chance to look at them.

Her eyes flitted from holo to holo, pride filling her heart when she realised how closely the First Order still followed the ideals of the Galactic Empire of old. She reached out and touched the holo of Darth Vader, as his black clad figure stalked across the projected image, before swiftly withdrawing her hand when it went through the legend, grinning sheepishly. She had been so enthralled that she forgot that they were just holos.

“Where did you get them from, Master Kyrel? I've always thought they were just myths! Oooooh, to think they actually existed.

In her excitement, Marriskcal forgot to restrain herself.

Kyrel was delighted by how the girl was staring at the holos. When he had first discovered the origins of the old Empire. He was surprised by it as well. In his years, he had spent a long time trying to discover the origins of how it all began. He spent hours on end trying to dig up old records, old holorecording that hasn't been touched. Not since the Four Hundred-Year Darkness. Still, the joy it brought to the girl was delightful. To know where the First Order's origins came from. He had figured it would be a long time, perhaps maybe years till she was fully ready, all the while he would groom her. Groom her to be perhaps the perfect weapon, turning a child to the dark side was difficult rather than adults. Adults have easily forged thanks in large part to the trauma they had suffered in life. For a child, he would try a different approach. Instead of the rod, he would try the carrot. Then when he felt she was ready, he would break her.

He looked at her, the holo still playing, showing different images, Star Destroyers in orbit, Imperial TIE Fighters swarming a rebel fleet of old. Jedi being hunted down by the cybernetic monstrosity of Vader. So many images he found from the Ancient past. Each one had a profound impact on how he viewed the Order as a whole. As the successors to what was the Empire. Improving on the flaws that the Empire failed to correct. That was why the Order was strong. They had risen from the depths of the Unknown Regions, and improved upon the old Imperial doctrines in almost every way. The Ren was no exception. While yes similar to the Sith in almost every way, they did not, however, focus on themselves. Instead, they had focused on what was needed of them. Absolute obedience and loyalty to both the Supreme Leader, and to that of the First Imperial Regime. Personal ambitions and desires came second to that of the goals of the Supreme Leader, and the Order.

Giving her a Fatherly smile, he spoke in answering her question. "Many years young one. Many years, I searched through the archives of the Empire to find such knowledge. It was all real, the Republic, the Emperor, Vader. All of it was true. No mere story indeed. If you wish to learn more you are more than welcome." He said as he placed a hand on her shoulder.

Marriskcal paused, all of her earlier joy and delight dissipating when she felt a touch on her person. Her steel blue eyes swiftly glanced up to meet the Steward’s own poisonous amber eyes with slight apprehension at what she might find.

Her instructors has always tried to impress the importance of gravitas within the youngling, and while she carried herself well for her age, there were times when her veneer of solemnity slipped and her bubbly personality shone true. It did not help that as an initiate, her instructors had allowed her some semblance of leeway. And to add to her increasing series of bad habits, no one close to her seemed to mind that Marriskcal acted herself in their presence so long as she accomplished their objectives with competence. It was with these subtle encouragements that the blonde was beginning to learn a new set of boundaries.

It was to her utter relief that instead of being met with disapproval, Master Kyrel merely graced her with a kind smile. She nodded vigorously, as if she was worried that the older male would retract his offer if she did not answer him quickly enough. “I would, how I would!” Marriskcal was awestruck. She, and other younglings of her age group had thought that the Empire, Darth Sidious and Darth Vader were a legend. And to find out they breathed, fought and conquered were a revelation to her indeed. She had so many things she wanted to discover about them, if Darth Sidious was really as charismatic as Emperor Palpatine as some of the recordings mentioned, or oh, if Darth Vader really did originate from flames of Mustafar.

If you need help in sorting your collection out, Master Kyrel, may I be the first to volunteer
?
