OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a city that reflects the passage of time on Cotellier, and to serve as a central hub for business RP.
  • Canon: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Links: Cotellier, Firmus Kett.
SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Firmus City
  • Classification: Industrial metropolis, planetary capital.
  • Location: Cotellier.
  • Affiliation: LIKON Corporate Systems holds a significant monopoly within this city, owning roughly fifty percent of its assets.
  • Population: Heavy (est. 10,000,000)
  • Demographics:
    • 90% of the population are miners, technicians, or otherwise involved in mining operations.
    • 10% of the population are executives and corporate representatives.
    • Varied species, with a human majority. Most alien species are known for their industrial or mechanical ability, or for great strength.
  • Wealth: Medium
  • Stability: Medium
A corporate mining world, Cotellier (and by extension Firmus) isn't a place you go to for the fun of it - visitors and inhabitants always have a purpose to their visit, typically mining and business related. In many respects, this has created a large amount of stability; employees are well paid (by Rim standards), and the population is generally accepting of outsiders, regardless of species, so long as you are competent and there to work. If you're lazy, not there on business, and generally aimless - get out of the way, there's work to do. Altogether, Cotellieri are described as grim, yet honest and hardworking.

Historically, however, Cotellier and the greater Rseik Sector have been absolutely rampant with pirates. In modern times this is no different - Cotellier and the Rseik sector are overrun, and piracy is a part of daily life for miners. This negatively impacts stability as pirates put everyday workers and their families in danger, and threaten their livelihoods when hard earned ore and crystals are destroyed and seized in transit. When the corporations don't get paid, the workers don't get paid.
  • Freedom & Oppression:
Like most of life on Cotellier, all beings including children are managed by identicard - these cards control where a person is allowed to go, what corporation they work for, etc. This said, the atmosphere is generally free, and employees are allowed and encouraged to roam parks, shopping districts, and other such locales and venues. There is a distinct understanding among the populace that enhanced security is an absolute necessity - this is reinforced by the rampant piracy in the sector, and the frequent attacks and raids on the planet.

That said, Firmus is exceptionally hard on crime, with corporate security frequently roaming the streets looking for delinquents and troublemakers; minor offenses such as petty theft could easily result in a beating, while something more serious typically results in immediate disintegration. This brutal approach to policy enforcement is generally thought of as a necessary evil due to the rampant crime in the sector.

Government-wise, Firmus and the planet itself is run by corporatocracy; the majority owners of the largest mining operations on the planet have their corporate headquarters in Firmus, and generally decide policies through boardroom vote: employees typically have little say in these processes aside from strikes and formal protests, leaving little in the way of direct democracy. Corporations typically acknowledge, though, that happy employees are productive employees, taking into consideration employee interests.
  • Description:
At a glance, Firmus is a sprawling metropolitan city of pipes, industrial factories and refineries, expansive landing pads, and a central cluster of towering cloudcutters. The city is constantly alive with a seemingly never ending stream of freighter traffic, though has relatively light landspeeder and airspeeder traffic; this is because the planet's dominant vehicle, massive kilometer tall mobile mining towers, are responsible for moving the bulk of the planet's population. These towers seem to cruise across the planet's surface, going about their mining business, before periodically making their way to Firmus to dock - a temporary skyscraper that will all too soon leave after unloading their ore and restocking supplies.
POINTS OF INTEREST
• LIKON Corporate Headquarters
An impressive building in brutalist style - LIKON headquarters is all permacrete and durasteel, looking like a fusion between a cloudcutter and reinforced bunker. The grounds of the building are enclosed on all sides by tall pylons, these pylons generate a strong fence-field barrier; barring this, woven flexisteel link is strung tightly between each pylon, capable of providing a nasty jolt. Patrolled by corporate security and seeker and camera droids, this building has heavy security.
• Refineries and processing plants
Cotellier has a booming infrastructure that supports refineries and processing plants on the planet: made to shorten the number of trips raw materials have to make before they can be sold as a final product, Firmus smelts everything from Durasteel to Crystadurium and everything in between.
• Housing megacomplexes
Massive communal apartments, these efficiency living spaces are hardly more than a bed, refresher unit, compact food synthesizer, and couch. Hundreds of thousands live in Firmus megacomplexes; families, on the other hand, typically live aboard mobile mining pltforms that trek across Cotellier.
• Landing fields
Instead of having a single central space port, Firmus has multiple large "landing fields" dedicated to accepting starcraft of all shapes and sizes. This is primarily due to the sheer amount of shipping traffic that the planet handles, as well as the fact that different companies and corporations own different sections of the city.
SECURITY
• High
Large-scale defenses:
Ray / particle shutter shield (DSS generator comparable), three planetary turbolasers (W-165 comparable), one planetary ion cannon (V-150 comparable).
Mid-scale defenses:
Numerous air defense towers (rapidfire light turbolaser, ion, and missile), several squadrons of TIE/mg (modern refits).
Small-scale defenses:
Several thousand corporate security officers (comparable to an Espo), several hundred AT-RCTs, VAAT/es, RAIDERs, Recon Transports.
Structural defenses:
Large scale weapon detectors and pulse beat monitors working in tandem with smaller scattered security scanners; most if not all weapons in Firmus are officially registered as corporate property and is registered with this system - this system decreases vastly in ability in the refinery and processing plant areas. Hit-traps are present at most major entrances (landing field entrances and exits, large buildings and structures). Virtually every individual in Firmus has an identibadge that has a small transponder (monitored by detectors), as well as identifying info such as chaincodes that restrict or grant access to different areas.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Named after Firmus Kett, who set down the first permanent settlements on the surface of Cotellier, Firmus grew from a loose collection of haphazard semi-permanent settlements into the sprawling industrial metropolis that it is today.
Originating as a shipping station where the planet's mobile mining towers could dock and resupply, Firmus grew rapidly over the centuries as mining towers regularly used Firmus for a slew of expanding services. From shipping, to housing, to a centralized place of government and administration - having a singular area where Cotellier businesses could congregate and coordinate business for the planet made sense as mining operations began to expand and become ever more complex.
Eventually Firmus reached a critical size where it could be called a metropolis, and being the only city on the planet (and much larger than even the largest of mining platforms) became the de facto capital. Firmus now houses roughly ten million sentients, most of the planet's population, as well as acts as the physical headquarters for all of Cotelliers corporate mining and shipping interests.
