  • Intent: A new model of Ion Cannon for use by Fojanah Heavy Productions in the designs of Vehicles and Starships
  • Image Source: Source by Synthorian
  • Canon Link: Ion Cannon, Chaingun
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A

PRODUCTION INFORMATION

  • Manufacturer: Fojanah Heavy Productions
  • Affiliation: Fojanah Heavy Productions - Anyone who licenses it from the Fojanah Heavy Productions Marketplace
  • Market Status: (Closed-Market
  • Model: FHP-CR-1 Hybrid Ion Chain Cannon
  • Modularity: Can either be attached directly to a power source for use on ships, vehicles, or base emplacements, or loaded with power cells for a more limited firing time.
  • Production: Mass-Produced
  • Material: Durasteel, Ion/Blaster Components, Plasteel

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Ion Chain Gun
  • Size: Average[/COLOR
  • Weight: Heavy
  • Ammunition Type: Power Cell or Power Generator
  • Ammunition Capacity: Average - When operating on standard power cells, it has a sustained fire of about 30 seconds before a reload, when connected to a power generator, it has unlimited shots but overheating or jamming of the chain mechanism is possible.
  • Effective Range: Average
  • Rate of Fire: Very High
  • Damage Output: Low
  • Recoil: Average - Strictly Speaking the majority of the recoil comes not from the ion charge being fired, but from the movement of the chain mechanism. Practically the same, but technically different.

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Chain Control Mechanism - The Ion Cannon uses a Chain mechanism to rapidly shift between different firing barrels to compensate for the usually slow fire of a Ion Cannon.
  • Targeting Computer - Comes Equipped with a basic but functional Targeting Computer to predict the path of fired bolts, can be removed in favor of whatever targeting system the ship/turret/vehicle it is on uses instead.
  • Fire Linked Functionality - If Applicable
  • Rangefinder
  • Weapon Integrity Reader - Operating Temperature, Power Levels, Status of Ion Condensers, ETC

STRENGTHS
  • Ion Cannon - As an Ion Cannon the FHP-CR-1 Hybrid Ion Chain Cannon is capable of shutting down targeted droids, ships, vehicles, and other power systems.
  • High Rate of Fire - To counter the common slow fire rate of Ion Cannons, Fojanah Heavy Productions invested in basically strapping 7 small cannons together, and having them rapidly rotate to bring them in line with a firing mechanism (Six outer barrels, one slightly larger center barrel). The result was a rapid firing Chain Cannon that could send many ion cannon bolts down field at a moments notice.
WEAKNESSES
  • Overheating - While it fires rapidly, the chain mechanism used for the Chain Cannon generates heat over prolonged bursts of fire, and as it has no built in cooling systems, sustained fire can damage or destroy the weapon, lowering or eliminating it's effectiveness on the field.
  • Low Practical Damage - As an Ion Weapon, it does very little damage to non-electronic targets, and limited damage to properly shielded targets, limiting it to use against certain priority targets.
DESCRIPTION
Fojanah Heavy Productions created the FHP-CR-1 Hybrid Ion Chain Cannon as it began work on it's first line of commercial military bombers. Realizing that their bomber wouldn't have much to set it apart from the many other models on the market, they returned to the drawing board for ideas, and decided to make it a Shieldbreaker Bomber. To facilitate this, they wanted to give it weaponry of a unusual kind, and looked into Ion Cannons that while many other vessels did use, were often secondary or tertiary weapons. The problem was, Ion Cannons were slow firing and easy to dodge, even with FHP design philosophy they were inaccurate and cumbersome. At first they nearly abandoned the line of thought, till a Twi'lek engineer proposed they design their own line of Cannons to both sell, and use for their submissions. While the board was skeptical it would be successful, they greenlit the project by a narrow margin.

This eventually led to the birth of the FHP-CR-1 Hybrid Ion Chain Cannon. The basic idea was to take smaller ion cannons, usually fielded on tripods or by infantry, scale them up slightly, and wire them together. With other refinements in the project on Ion Condensers and power regulation, eventually the seven barreled Chain Cannon was born. Using a Chain mechanism to rapidly rotate the barrels of the cannon, bringing them in line with the building Ion shot, and firing it before another is rotated into place, it circumvented the usual slow fire rate of Ion weapons with a much faster weapon capable of suppressing fire. The tradeoff was that each Ion Bolt was far weaker than normal, requiring multiple hits to do the same damage. Further while some beta designs incorporated a cooling jacket, it's intended placement on ships and the high speed nature of their combat meant that it was extra weight for a flaw that trained pilots would know to avoid. In the end the cooling jacket was removed, and replaced with a Rangefinder and Targeting Computer, simple but functional ones that allowed the weapon to be used on turrets.

After testing, it was greenlit to be the second commercial product of the company as a whole, and began trail runs on some of the companies ship projects. The Board put the Twi'lek in charge of weapons research for FHP, and while no other major projects are yet in the works, incremental upgrades of the FHP-CR-1 Hybrid Ion Chain Cannon are being considered and tested, including the possibility of a second run as a PD Ion Weapon for stations or larger ships.
