Feng vs Ellisanthia [Saber Clash

All it takes is a Spark

To the northern quarantine of the biodome, an urban jungle. The two, Feng Huang Feng Huang and Ellissanthia Ellissanthia are left in an alley, flanked on both sides by tall, brick walls with fire escapes and windows on both sides.

"Round One! Fight!"

The robotic voice sounds off, leaving the two with the sound of simulated urban living, and each other.

Feng breathed deep she was nervous, anxious, excited, giddy. This was going to be fun. A true to test of her skills, with just enough stakes to make it interesting. Feng wasn't sure which form she was going to go with her Makashi and Shien were her strongest, her Ataru and Niman adequate, Soresu was her weakest, Djem So she didn't quite of the strength for but it informed her Shien. Shi Cho was elementary, but Feng had never heard of anyone winning a lightsaber duel with Shii Cho. Feng didn't know any Vaapad. Truthfully it scared her, she had enough trouble in the heat of combat resisting the lure of the dark side without engaging in a form that specifically cultivated it. Though a part of her wondered if she wouldn't be suited to it, not just in inclinationbut in discipline, finding a way to get a hold of the darkness inside of her.

Part of why Feng was so looking forward to this particular test of skills, is that it would, she hoped, allow her to test herself in earnest without the dangers and pressures of true combat. Plus, it was just… fun. This was sport, no lives on the line, just good-natured competition. Testing oneself against a worthy opponent, without the sorrow that came with loss of life.

Sure, things might get heated in sport, but rarely did it cause a life lost, of untold suffering of civilian casualties as one tried to restraint herself from smiting those responsible with extreme prejudice.

Feng took a breath as she remembered the cultists on Corellia. Now was not the time. She had to set her mind to the task at hand. While Feng knew it wasn't healthy to keep things buried, without acknowledging of them, at the same time she couldn't give into her emotions, least of all on the battlefield. She couldn't be living her life in constant fear of what she was becoming. That was no way to live your life.

Life was about joy, happiness, growth, progression. Today's tourney could be an important opportunity for personal growth. It was better than combat, it was life, the opposite of what combat's purpose was.

Feng approached her opponent. Pantoran, jedi robes, head scarf. Her stance was good, well balanced, walked as if someone who could take up a ready or flow stance at a moments notice.

"Hi! I'm Feng!" Feng called out brightly a big goofy yet fierce smile on her face, a glint in her eye. As she took up a ready Makashi stance. The most useful form she had for one on one combat.

This was certainly one of the more audacious assignments that she had ever volunteered for. She had been nervous at first. And yet, now that the preparation stage was finished, Ellissanthia—now known as a Pantoran Jedi called Venlana Solay—could hardly restrain her excitement for it. After so much time and effort spent perfecting her disguise, here she was, at the Saber Clash tournament, standing face to face against her first opponent.

And her objective was to win it all.

Naturally, that was much easier imagined than achieved. Even so, no great feat or any task worth doing was ever easy, and this would certainly be no exception. Fortunately, the nature of the tournament format made it easy to divide the monumental task into a series of manageable challenges.

In that, the first challenge before her was to defeat the Jedi Feng Huang.

The woman stood several inches taller than her, with a slender, athletic build and long violet hair done up in a plaited ponytail. Seeing her poised and confident Makashi stance, Venlana immediately recognized her opponent duelist that was intimately familiar with the weight and song of a lightsaber.

All the while, Venlana set her own lightsaber to training mode and ignited it, at which point a fuchsia-hued blade came alight with a sharp hiss-snap. She had no intention of killing her opponent and to make sure of that, she flicked the safety on her lightsaber to hard-disable the lethal setting. Then, she stepped forward, a slight, graceful smile touching her lips as Feng introduced herself.

“Hello,” Venlana began in a melodious tone, as she gave her lightsaber a few preparatory flourishes. “I am Venlana Solay.” She continued, her gaze meeting Feng’s with respectful intensity.

“May the best of us win and...” Venlana smiled, before settling into the fluid, acrobatic readiness of an Ataru stance. “May the Force be with us both!”

Feng nodded and smiled fiercely.

"The Force be with you as well."

Ataru stance. That was tricky. Ataru was powerful, fast, fierce where Makashi was precise, rapid, disarming. A skilled Ataru attacker could overwhelm a defence bouncing around from a dozen different directions. Feng had two options with Makashi v Ataru, end it quickly or out last. Both had merits, but in the words of a wise young lady in chip holo commercial 'Why not both?'. If the first failed she could always fall back on the second

She double checked that her lightsaber was set to training mode. Then she breathed deep met Venlana's eyes and nodded once sharply. There was a tense few moments as each waited for the other to make the first move. Feng knew it was a Jedi tactic, it was as much a philosophy as a tactic. It gave an opponent time to change their mind. The heat of the moment to pass. There was also the fact that making the first attack was against the Jedi code.

Feng didn't really think that applied to tourneys but then old habits, trained habits died hard. Feng felt herself getting impatient and soothed herself by tensing and relaxing her muscles, doing some mental exercises. Impatient was going to make her lose. This tournament was against skilled opponents not just cultists or stormtroopers. She had to be patient.

She waited for a few more moments. Then she launched into a thrust, a series of thrusts. It was to Feng's mind the greatest advantage of Makashi. The other forms had sweeping strokes, but Makashi had thrusts. Thrusts were notoriously difficult to properly defend against.

Feng had heard tell of a tale on swordsmanship so far back the opponents were using actual swords. Nobles from either side of their planet finally met, and even though one small island nation had a martial tradition going back centuries of discipline, training and honour, they found their sweeping moves of little use against the tight form of rapier fighting. The same fighting Makashi was developed from.

So Feng thrust, her feet following up the thrusts with form. She didn't expect it to work right away, but the pressure was on, so long as Feng kept up the pressure, kept backing her opponent up as she couldn't use Ataru, which required an open space to flow. Feng had the advantage. She had no intention of letting it go.

Waiting within the context of combat was not something that Ellissanthia was used to. She was an offensive warrior, striking hard, striking fast, and striking from a distance, so as to lock down and destroy her target. Unfortunately, that mindset in this contest would not serve. Instead, she had decided to exploit her natural hyper-athleticism and cardiovascular endurance to facilitate Form IV. However, rather than adopting the typical ferocity of the Ataru Striker, Venlana decided that she would practice its movement as a means of meditation.

In motion, she would weave the opening through which she would strike.

Thus, when Feng struck out in a series of thrusts, Venlana flowed backward in a balletic jump-pirouette, landing lightly on the balls of her feet a few meters behind her original position. With the fresh space between them, she planted her foot and pounced forward with preternatural acceleration, as if she intended to perform a running leap directly over her opponent to strike from the air.

The truth of her maneuver was revealed at the last possible moment.

Venlana kicked her legs out, leveraging her built-up momentum to initiate a swift slide directly between (or around) Feng’s legs. Once she was behind her, she kipped around with sinuous grace, rotating to face the Jedi’s back as she rose. Then, in the same continuous motion, she leveled a precise thrust of her own aimed between Feng’s shoulder blades!

Feng did her best to keep up the pressure of her Makashi thrusts. Makashi was a Form all about precision, control, footwork and form. Every move was carefully designed, delivered and demonstrated with technique. Against Ataru there were two ways one could win, a blinding attack before the Ataru striker could counter or by outlasting them, waiting for the key moment to strike, never letting up the pressure whether in attack or defence.

Nonetheless Feng was surprised by Venlana's recovery. As well as her own control of her force enhanced gymnastics. As soon as Venlana leapt back Feng knew her attempt at resolving this quickly had failed. This was no novice padawan easily overwhelmed. This was a Jedi Knight, an opponent worthy of respect. If she failed to give it, she would soon learn her lesson.

Feng settled back into a defensive stance ready to receive Venlana's next attack. She expected a running leapt over her head, an attack from above. Instead Venlana swept for her legs, or at least could have. Feng made a quick jump presenting her lightsaber to defend a sweep of her legs, only none was forth coming. By the time she land on her feet Venlana was behind her.

Feng reacted without thinking and dived into a roll. She felt the other lightsaber pass over her head. Coming up from her roll. Feng covered her weakened position by spinning to realign fact to face with her opponent. Using the swing with momentum she launched a series of attacks this time, interspersing thrusts with strikes towards limbs and the occasional decapitation cut.

Once she had some breathing room. Feng stepped back two spaces and circled, lightsaber held high in a Makashi stance. Feng resisted the temptation to breathe heavily and fast, her breaths were measured, controlled, just like Makashi.

As Feng came towards her on the offensive, Venlana answered with the dance that was Ataru defense. Less static blocking, and more dips, pirouettes, and soaring leaps, with each motion flowing into the next. Ataru in her style was a dance, and she followed its steps as if she were practicing a velocity sequence.

Thus, as Feng stepped back in retreat, Venlana was already initiating the next step in the sequence; an explosive ground-eating lunge that covered the two spaces in a split-second. It was a movement driven by preternaturally powerful legs capable of launching her body from the ground in the manner of a spring. However, rather elevating herself over the ground, she stayed low, her appearance that of a violet and cerulean-hued streak rushing in at an oblique angle.

Her next attack, delivered with the lightsaber still in her left hand, came as a low horizontal sweeping attack aimed at knee-level, a direct attack at Feng’s foundation that was intended to knock her off-balance. The force behind it was the full torque of her elongated, whiplike limb, augmented by the momentum of her lunge!

Feng didn't even have a moment to breathe as Venlana's next attack came. The lunge and spring, didn't catch Feng off guard, exactly, yet she still was pressed to recover with the precision that Makashi demanded of her. That was the problem with Makashi, it's precision could also be a weakness, every step needed to be exact, every flourish of the lightsaber measured. Precision, controlled, measured, calculated and responded. If a duelist didn't know every step in the dance they were doomed to fail.

Feng thought she was prepared for the lunging attack and prepared to catch it with her own repisote that in a real fight would allow her to disarm or strike the hands and limbs. Instead, Feng grunted as the full force of the lunge, caught her momentarily off balance. Feng recovered quickly shifting her feet to correct her stance. The two lightsabers locked. The heat of the blades, even training blades through off flashes of light.

Feng knew the advantage had shifted, she had to get it back. Feng shifted her feet once again and spun to the side, following up with a decapitation stroke in the same movement. Hoping that the sudden lack of resistance would propel her opponent off balance just for a moment. Long enough for Feng to deliver the killing blow.

The two lightsabers locked. The heat of the blades, even training blades through off flashes of light.

In the split-second that the blade lock could have solidified, Venlana yielded.

Instead, she planted her foot, killing her own forward momentum. Then, leveraging the same torque that had powered her lunge, she pivoted on the ball of her lead foot, her body spinning inward, toward Feng, rather than away. This was a fast, tight combat pivot, executed abruptly in the heat of battle. In the process, her fuchsia-hued blade prevented the lock from happening entirely by sliding off as she turned.

Her follow-up strike came from this point-blank, off-angle spin. As her body rotated, Velana converted the failed sweep's energy into a swift backhand thrust delivered with the lightsaber in her left hand. The blade lanced low, aimed for the inside of Feng’s lead thigh with the intention of targeting the femoral nerve for a potentially debilitating sting. Should it connect, Venlana anticipated that the strike might trigger involuntary quadriceps paralysis, causing her opponent’s lead leg to buckle beneath her. It was the kind of disabling shot favored in training duels, and it arose from the center of Feng’s own action, seeking to penetrate the opening created as the Aakaashian started her own spin.

The decapitation strike which Feng may have intended to initiate would now be interrupted as she was forced to contend with a sudden, severe, and crippling attack that was already in motion at her core, approaching from an angle that Venlana hoped her opponent would be poorly positioned to defend!

Feng found herself exposed, and almost off balance as Venlana's completed her own spinning attack. Feng's strike against Venlana's neck would be interrupted by a strike against Feng's lead thigh. Feng had split second to decide on a course of action, she went on instinct inspired by her opponents own use of the form, she turned her spin into a back flip in the opposite direction. An Ataru move. The flip began with launching her lead thigh back her body movement following and flowing with it, combining it with a flourish of her lightsaber less designed to do any damage as provide her with some breathing room.

Feng brought her lightsaber move in a second defensive flourish as her back flip ended her rotation and she began to land. As she landed, Feng held her lightsaber up in a guard, breathing in measured breaths. That move had almost cost her the match she'd overexposed herself and had to fall back on an Ataru move against an Ataru wielder. Feng needed to readjust her strategy from ending the duel quickly, this was going to be a long contest, not easily resolved, she would have to play against Ataru's weaknesses. Outlasting and provoking exposing acrobatic attacks.

Makashi was a form useful in both attack and defence, so long as one was dueling one opponent and maintained composure. Ataru was dependent on fast attacks overwhelming an opponent with acrobatic attacks designed to confuse and attack from multiple directions.

Defensive wasn't in Feng's nature, but she could adapt. She held her blade in high defensive guard, after a short fencing salute out of respect for her opponents last move.

Venlana’s blade met only the wake of Feng’s retreating flip. She recognized the move immediately—a clever, elegant adaptation of her own technique to evade what otherwise would have been a decisive blow.

“That was a lovely flip!” Venlana called out, a playful smile gracing her features in answer to Feng’s fencing salute. All the while, her body was already coiling for the next sequence. She knew almost instinctively that her opponent would seek to exploit the weaknesses of Ataru by making the duel into a protracted contest. Venlana had no intention of allowing it.

Thus, Venlana advanced, charging down the centerline with a series of bounding steps that covered ground with alarming speed. Then, five paces from Feng’s guard, she diverted her momentum into an explosive upward juke. As she rose, she planted a foot against the alley’s right-hand wall, leveraging the momentary contact to generate a microburst of force.

It propelled her diagonally across the alley as something akin to a violet and cerulean blur, crossing Feng’s field-of-vision at a disorienting wall-to-wall angle. She landed with a light tap against the opposite wall, utilizing it as another pivot point to push off downward at a sharp angle towards Feng.

It was from this aggressive diving trajectory that Venlana struck. As she descended, she threw a powerful two-handed diagonal slash arced from her own left shoulder to her right hip, aimed to crash against the strong part of Feng’s upright blade. Her goal was to marry her falling momentum to the blow, in an attempt to slam the Aakaashian’s guard down and potentially create a massive opening in her high defense!

"Thanks!" Feng grinned fiercely, proud of herself for executing the move flawlessly. Ataru was far from her focus, so it felt nice to pull it off and be recognised for it. From someone other than a Master or fellow padawan in training that is.

Feng was beginning to enjoy herself. It felt good to test her skills against an opponent in earnest without the looming presence of death and suffering often found in a warzone. Whether it was her home or someone elses being destroyed, Feng felt it all the same. The motivations of the enemy mixing in with the emotions of the victims, greed and fear, power and suffering they went hand in hand.

It felt good to utilize her skills in a manner that wasn't for that purpose. Although Jedi only fought to defend life, they trained for internal discipline and sometimes just for the joy of it. Here Feng could relax, focus on the thrill of the fight, with the only consequence should she fall to be kicked out of a competition.

Feng tracked Venlana's movements, bouncing from wall to wall, as she relaxed and prepared for the coming blow. It would be foolish to attempt to meet the trajectory force with strength, she would have to time it perfectly.

Feng turned her highguard with a turn of her wrist, while side stepping, her footwork following, in the dance of blades, footwork was everything. She did not spin so much as gracefully turned aside, angling her highguard so that her opponents blade slide down and to the side. It would be tempting to sieze advantage of the moment and follow up with riposte counter strike, but Venlana had proven herself to be a true Ataru opponent. Feng let the blades slide off each other and stepped back holding her blade in a mid guard this time. Prepared to bide her time.

"Nice bouncing off the walls."

Feng smiled. They were too close for Feng to salute, but she inclined her head ever so slightly, her gaze focused beyond her blade on her opponents.

Venlana offered a fleeting smile in response to Feng’s compliment, but she didn’t stop to allow her to bide her time. Instead, as Feng expertly angled her guard to send the diagonal slash down and away—causing her blade to slide off of the Aakaashian’s in the process—Venlana used the remaining momentum of her descent to drop into a spinning crouch. Her leg swept out in a wide arc, aimed at forcing Feng to maintain her retreat.

However, even as she completed her leg sweep, Venlana was already uncoiling upward.

With a single explosive motion, she launched into an ascending wall-run. Pushing off from her crouch, she took three quick, yet powerful vertical steps up the brick wall to Feng’s left, her body flowing parallel to the ground as she moved. At the apex, she pushed off backwards, performing a dazzling mid-air backflip that carried her cleanly over Feng’s head.

As Venlana flipped mid-air, she extended her right hand, her will manifesting a precise telekinetic tug. Its target was the loose gravel and dust on the alley floor directly at the Aakaashian's feet, drawn upward with the intention of throwing a cloud of debris into her face and eyes.

From there, Venlana landed directly behind her opponent. The instant her boots touched duracrete, she delivered a low and direct lightsaber thrust with her left hand in a lunging attack, aimed for the back of Feng’s right knee. The move was intended to target the popliteal nerve, so as to collapse the Aakaashian's stance from behind while her vision was potentially compromised!

Feng continued to retreat as Venlana completed her leg sweep. It irritated her a little that she was doing exactly what her opponent wanted her to do, but then it helped that it was also what Feng's strategy was. Feng wanted to draw Venlana into further attacks, to overextended herself, tire herself out as she made more and more mistakes. Feng may have been practicing Makashi, but she also had a Shien mindset, to redirect attacks towards their target, wait for a weakness to exploit.

Feng followed Venlana's acrobatics to her left with careful positioning of her footwork to face any oncoming attacks with full preparedness while maintain enough flexibility to readjust and reposition herself to face attacks from a sudden turn of direction.

It was tempting to strike Venlana as she backflipped over Feng's head, but no, it was premature. She could use the momentum of Ataru backflip to follow up with rapid strikes as soon as Feng was overextended. Instead Feng pivoted in a spin to follow her path keeping her saber in position to deflect attacks.

Feng felt the telekinetic tug, almost started scrambling for a shield, but a thought entered her head, of how Aiden Porte Aiden Porte utilized the Force, subtle, precision, not overwhelming. Followed by training Master Wu had insisted upon as a Jedi Monk. Fighting blindfolded relying on ones senses. It was a risk, but it felt right. Feng closed her eyes and extended her senses.

The gravel and dirt struck her face, it stung. Feng ignored the pain. Focusing on where the next strike would be coming from, she felt the flow of the Force, the rhythm, it was like music, music of life, of the universe, she felt where the ripples and waves were interrupted by the presence of their lightsabers.

Feng's body moved before she consciously followed the thought, guided by instinct and the Force she blocked the strike to her knee with her lightsaber, and held it. Feng cracked one eye open and grinned. She followed the block with a light tap with her lightsaber, directed at her opponents elbow, even in a real fight it would only cause a searing wound, but then Makashi was all about precision strikes to pierce an opponents defences, wear them down if necessary.

The sharp crack-hiss of the parry vibrated up Venlana’s arm. Feng’s blade had intercepted hers with a sharply angled deflection that sent her thrust skittering off into empty air. The precision and timing of the maneuver was nothing short of masterful, and it had to be, in order to successfully deflect a thrust with a lightsaber.

Venlana would have gasped in awe, but it was then that she felt a stinging tap against her own elbow from the riposte that followed the block. In a real fight it would have been a grazing blow, but in this context, it was a warning in the form of a swift counter-strike executed in true Makashi fashion.

Venlana gave a sharp hiss as the pain washed over her, but she did not falter or stop moving. She used the failed thrust’s momentum to continue her forward lunge into a rolling pass. She dropped her shoulder and flowed past Feng’s flank, so close that her sleeve might brush against the Aakaashian’s arm. As she passed, her right hand shot out in a clawing rake strike aimed at Feng’s extended lightsaber wrist, seeking to disrupt her grip or balance with a sharp dig of her claw-like nails.

An Undine Sithspawn’s instinctive brutality momentarily piercing the Pantoran Jedi’s polished facade to break into the clean Jedi duel.

Ellissanthia—Venlana—did not linger to see the result. The pass ended with her coming up on Feng’s other side, already whirling. Her lightsaber in her left hand, now recovered from the deflected thrust, came around in a quick horizontal swipe at waist height, leveled in a left-to-right slashing attack aimed to catch Feng as she recovered from her own parrying posture!
