The idea of having their fleet always on the move was an admittedly good one, it made the most sense given the situation with the Covenant's neighbours. It was the same reason his mother's old clan always stayed on the move as well. But, by Manda, it made for one hell of a headache when it came to logistics and lodging. Sure, Yuri's freighter could run back and forth between Kestri and wherever he needed to be, but even the freighter needed to restock and refuel after a while.

So the Hound did what every sensible man would do.

He touched down in the hangar of Kjartan's flagship with bag and helmet in hand. Proverbially, at least. The freighter did need some servicing and he wasn't going to fight with every captain in the Mythos Fleet for clearance.

There was, however, a more sensible reason for reaching out to Kjartan other than wanting to be a cheapskate. But that matter would be discussed in time, first he needed to butter the man up and get permission to crash on his couch. So, while waiting for Kjartan to meet him, the Hound organized his items next to Maybelle in the cargo hold of his freighter and got to work on fixing the problematic systems.

He wasn't too concerned. The Hammer-hand couldn't get enough of the local mutts, after all.

KJARTAN HAMMER-HAND

How long had it been?

Ever since the skirmish at Mon Calamari honestly, when that devil dog had coaxed Kjartan into a half-baked scheme to steal equipment from the Imperial Confederation on behalf of the Wild Space Rebellion. While it had reawoken the feral side within the old pirate, the foray against the Imperial fleet had resulted in significant damage to the Buurenaar’gam, leaving Kjartan with a lot of explaining to do while Yuri was nowhere to be seen.

Kjartan was the master of the vessel, so whatever actions taken with it were his to answer for either way; that much was the obvious right of the matter. Yet even still, Yuri’s absence dealt a personal blow to the warlord that had hardened the chieftain to the rogue.

That was until Humbarine.

It was strange how so much loss could give a man new perspective. Kjartan was not unaccustomed to the loss of life among those under his command, yet Humbarine was a singular loss keenly felt; due in no small part to the loss of his arm. So when the alert came to his attention of a very familiar freighter docking within his hold, along with a request for his personal presence, Kjartan opted to honor the request rather than simply rejecting it out of hand.

The pirate lord’s boots fell with heavy thumps throughout the halls of the warship, with the occasional crewman sliding out of the way with a respectful nod. Soon enough, the doors to the hangar bay housing Yuri and his ship would part, revealing the imposing form of the Hammer-Hand as his gait proceeded within, only to slow and soon stop several paces away. Kjartan’s eyes hardened upon the Shistevanen. “You either want something, or are running from someone.” he said flatly. “Which is it?”

The Hammer-hand's arrival could not only be smelled from a distance, but heard. Heavy footfalls grew closer with each passing second, announcing Kjartan's presence to the Hound. Yuri tossed his tools back into the toolbox and made his way to the edge of the cargo bay ramp with an innocent smile adorned. "Kjartan! Thanks for meetin' me." He greeted, though his host seemed far less chipper than Yuri expected.

“You either want something, or are running from someone.”

“Which is it?”

The toothy smile remained as Yuri leaned against a hydraulic strut. "Would it make ya happier if I said 'both'?" He asked with a sing-song voice, though it disappeared with the smile when he realized he wasn't going to fool anyone. His golden eyes looked the man over, finally settling on the cybernetic arm. "That explains the metal I smelled." He commented with a nod to his arm. Vara had told him of the man's injury, but he hadn't gotten the chance to see it up close.

No wonder he was such a sour grouch.

"I was hopin' I could crash on your ship. Or, at least, get a parking space for my freighter when I'm in town." He asked, deciding to skip the pleasantries. "Now, before you just shoo me outta here, I got a proposition for ya." He continued, hands held up to stop the captain from making any hasty decisions. With one hand gesturing to the inside of his ship, Yuri invited the man onboard. The least he could do was offer the guy a drink.

KJARTAN HAMMER-HAND

"Would it make ya happier if I said 'both'?"

The expression on Kjartan’s face remained deadpan, drawing heavier with a singular dry chuckle that escaped his lips as the Hound made light of his observation. Then Yuri’s eyes would drift down, settling on the mechanical arm folded across Kjartan’s chest, overlapped atop his remaining right limb.

"That explains the metal I smelled."

The silence prevailed between the two for a prolonged moment, until Kjartan shifted his mechanical appendage and extended it in front of him. He regarded the limb as though nothing had changed, flexing the fingers and shifting his hand from front to back. Finally, he spoke. “Aye... the skin burned off when I reached into an ignition manifold. Karkin’ painful it was, but I think I like the look better.”

“Hmm... I see, now we get to the truth of it. You want to show up here, loaf about and come and go as ye please? You got some nerve lad, after the move you pulled.” Kjartan took several hefty paces until he was right in front of the mutt, his eyes staring down at Yuri with a bemused expression; albeit a touch over the top. Kjartan held the grimace for several more seconds, until finally the facade cracked. His lips creased into a genuine smile, and soon parted as a hearty laugh filled the chamber. His mechanical arm shoved the Shistavanen hard on the upper-left side of his chest, and Kjartan’s right followed up with a playful yet firm strike to the rogue’s shoulder.

“O’course you’re welcome here, you devil dog. Naturally I had to give you some pause; that business at Mon Cal put a right dent into my purse to be sure, but its all in the past now.” A slight edge returned to the old pirate’s voice, innuendo peppering his next words. “...nothing you can’t make right in the present, o’course. I always knew you were good for the credits.” The meaning was clear - Yuri was welcome, provided he made it worth the pirate’s while.

Kjartan was stalwart and stern as he and Yuri spoke, though the Hound was beginning to see straight through the façade. He was laying it on too thick, even for a pirate captain. Yuri met the man in stride, sizing him up with an infuriatingly smug grin and glimmering eyes. The intention was simple, he was calling the Hammer-Hand's bluff.

“Hmm... I see, now we get to the truth of it. You want to show up here, loaf about and come and go as ye please? You got some nerve lad, after the move you pulled.”

"What move?" He asked, purposefully claiming ignorance behind the toothy grin. It wasn't a lie entirely, though, he genuinely wasn't sure what Kjartan was referring to. Was it the operation over Mon Cala? The Hound's absence on Humbarine? The state he and Vara left the drinking hall at the party? No, he was likely referring to the smuggling operation Yuri was doing on the side. It could likely be interfering with Kjartan's own operations...

A laugh finally broke the artificial tension. Kjartan shoved and punched at the Hound, who quicky returned his own durasteel strike at the man's side before wrapping an arm around him to land a slap on his back. Yuri led him into the freighter and broke out two bottles of ale for them once they reached his galley. Kjartan went on to clarify what he was "upset" about, earning a disappointed "Oh..." from the mutt. So it wasn't the smuggling and gun-running?

"Oh please, ya can't cry over Mon Cala. You got a few dents in your ship, you received full support from the Ironworks shipyards. 'Sides, you can brag that you helped stole part of an orbital yard, ya moof-milker." Yuri protested with a laugh.

He gestured to the booth and table for a seat and dropped into his own corner. "So, I'm sure ya heard of this big project goin' on. Mobile shipyards and stuff. I wanna get in on that, but until then I'll need a place to bunk with the fleet. So my proposal was to throw a couple engineers at you to help ya keep this tub spaceworthy." Yuri began to explain after a long swig of his drink. He proceeded to light a cigarette for himself before holding the packet out to Kjartan.

Kjartan pulled the bottle Yuri gave him up to his lips and took a hefty pull of its contents. He let out a hefty, contented sigh as Yuri set about his pitch. “Yeah yeah, you just want to use me for my ship. I get it. AT LEAST YOU BROUGHT SOME GOOD DRINK.” He let out a good-natured laugh, and took a seat on a crate inside the hold. “Joking aside, yer a rolling stone I get it. You’re always welcome here, as long as you earn your keep.”

He pulled out a cigarra and placed it between his lips. He pulled out a torch lighter and let the blue flame lick the end, pulling several puffs before pushing a gout of smoke from between his lips - billowing in a cloud. “Vara has been safe in the fleet, at any rate. She’s coming along nicely. You’d be proud.”

Yuri shared in the laughter with Kjartan's taunt, but gave an appreciative nod at the Hammer-Hand's permission to make himself at home onboard. "Gimme some credit, Kjartan, it's me we're talkin' about. I always got the good stuff." He quipped with a shrug. The man proceeded to take a smoke but before he could light it himself, Yuri's arm split open and the plasma cutter erupted to light the cigarette for him.

"Can yours do that?" He teased as his arm returned to its normal form.

Yuri peered through the glowing cloud between them with a knowing grin when Vara was mentioned. Sitting down across Kjartan, he helped himself to another sip of his drink. "Oh, I know. Met with her last week before I set out. Had ourselves a little sparring session." He admitted with a chuckle. "Karkin' harpy's temper is gonna be the death of her, but she's a damn good fighter. She keeps at it, she might be a rally master in a few years." He continued as he glanced back at Kjartan.

"I gave her my old armour. Helped her forge it to fit her better, but I figured if she's going to keep jumpin' into fights like this, she might as well have some good iron between her and her next beatdown." He remarked with another sip. It was probably taboo to give her a proper suit before her Verd'goten, but who would argue at this point?
