The music in Reveries was loud enough that conversation mostly happened at close range, which suited Jace fine.
He'd ended up near the edge of the dance floor with half a dozen people whose names he either hadn't caught or had already forgotten, moving with the crowd while coloured light slid over them. Someone had tried teaching him a step a few minutes earlier. Jace had decided he'd improved it, nearly taken out a passing server, and received a raised drink from one of the others in what looked suspiciously like accusation.
He grinned back, avoided being hauled into another round and slipped away toward the bar.
By the time he reached it, his shirt was sticking slightly between his shoulders. His jacket had been abandoned over a stool somewhere nearby. He could still see it, which was enough effort spent worrying about that.
Jace caught the bartender's attention and held up his empty glass.
"Same again. Make this one last longer."
The look he got in return suggested only half of that request fell within the bartender's responsibilities.
Probably fair.
Fresh drink in hand, Jace turned and leaned back against the bar.
Reveries had filled out while he'd been dancing. There were more people at the bar now and barely enough room left around the edge of the floor to stand without becoming part of it. Seven Corners tended to throw everyone together eventually. Jace could see expensive clothes, work gear, people who looked fresh out of an office and others who probably hadn't been anywhere near one in years. Nobody seemed especially interested in the difference.
He drank and watched a server squeeze between two crowded tables without spilling anything, which was probably more impressive than half the things he'd been paid to do lately. The music came through the bar under his elbow as much as it did through the speakers. Every so often a brighter wash of colour moved across the room and caught somebody's glass or jewellery before disappearing again.
A pair near the far side of the room headed toward the Recall Lounge. Jace followed them with his eyes for a moment, mostly because he still couldn't see the appeal. Paying good credits to borrow somebody else's memories seemed like doing things the long way around. If he wanted to experience something questionable, he was generally capable of arranging it himself.
His comlink was still where he'd left it.
That was unusual enough.
He had nothing due tonight and, unless somebody decided otherwise on his behalf, nowhere else to be. Jace took another drink and made a half-hearted attempt at stretching this one out, though he'd already lost track of whether he was succeeding.
Someone crossed near the entrance and moved aside again.
He knew the face behind them.
Rorie.
Jace's smile broadened as he straightened a little. He tried to catch her eye across the room and motioned to the spare chair at the bar beside him.
