STRENGTHS
  • Tractor Slip: Tractor beams require a stable, coherent energy matrix to latch onto a target's hull or shield. The scrambling effect can disrupt this cohesion, making it extremely difficult for a tractor beam to establish or maintain a hold. Thus, the scrambler allows a craft to escape from a tractor hold via a deliberate, low-power scramble to slip from a tractor beam's grip.
  • Leech Disruption: Upon detecting the distinctive energy-siphoning signature of a shield leech weapon the scrambler can violently and randomly alter the shield's electromagnetic frequency. It does this at the macro level of the shield's entire projected field in the localized area of the attack. This rapid, chaotic shift in energy frequency breaks the leech's coherent lock on the barrier. As a result, leeching munitions lose their hold, while leech beams are severed. In the latter case, the emitter is forced to spend critical seconds re-acquiring the new, shifting frequency.
  • Predictable Draw: The FAE/S-19 has a relatively high power consumption. However, this is a known quantity drawn and is accommodated by a dedicated capacitor bank that charges during normal operation. As a result, the scrambler does not cause significant reactor strain.
  • Electronic Warfare: The scrambling effect can act as a potent local sensor jammer and provides a minor defense against enemy attempts to predict a shield frequency for conventional weapons.
WEAKNESSES
  • Shield Weakening: The violent frequency shift temporarily destabilizes the shield matrix in the affected sector. For ~1 second after a scramble, that section of the shield operates at slightly reduced strength against all incoming fire. This creates a temporary soft spot in the barrier that can be feasibly exploited.
  • Detection and Exploitation: A frequency shift is visible to sensors as a large and chaotic EM burst for the duration of the scrambling effect. An alert enemy tactician or home-on-jam systems could feasibly map the effect’s activation. It announces its presence and its rhythm.
DESCRIPTION
Manufactured by First United Astral Engineering, the FAE/S-19 Shield Frequency Scrambler is an energy shield enhancement device intended to fulfill a wide variety of utility and defensive purposes. Capable of scrambling the electromagnetic frequency of the host's own energy shielding (not the energy shield of a separate craft), the FAE/S-19 is a mass-produced, rugged, reliable, and broadly compatible tool that brings advanced electronic shield defense to its users.

The scrambler is a relatively simple device. Rather than attempting to outpower a threat by boosting shield power, it disrupts the fundamental principle on which many advanced energy weapons rely: a stable, predictable target. Its advanced heuristic and positronic processors are pre-loaded with extensive signature libraries that are frequently updated to account for evolving threats. When its sensors detect a known threat pattern, it reacts by initiating chaos.

By violently and randomly altering the local shield frequency millions of times per second, it transforms a stable energy barrier into an electromagnetic storm. To a tractor beam, it is akin to attempting to grip smoke. For shield leech weapons, it is like trying to siphon from a river that keeps vanishing. This controlled disruption is intended to provide a critical window of survival, counterattack, or escape.

However, the FAE/S-19 comes with calculated trade-offs. The very act of scrambling creates a brief but predictable soft spot in the shield as the matrix stabilizes. Furthermore, its powerful EM burst can be a beacon on enemy sensors, which a savvy foe could theoretically exploit.

Nevertheless, the FAE/S-19 Shield Frequency Scrambler is hoped to become a mainstay in FAE-designed craft, a tool that with smart, calculated use, can swiftly turn the tables in virtually any engagement!
