Factory 5.0 Change Log
With the closure of the Factory through January 1st, I thought now would be a good time to announce the full list of changes coming to the factory that will go live on January 2nd, 2018. This will give everyone the chance to read through the changes, as well as ask questions. These changes will not affect any submissions currently under review. They will only apply to new submissions as of January 2nd. That being said, the entire staff of the factory have put a lot of time and effort into these changes, some of which were in the works before I was appointed as Factory Admin, so I would like to share my sincere gratitude for all of the work the current and former judges, and admin have put into this. We hope that these changes collectively enhance the community's accessibility to the factory and add to their enjoyment of their RP.

So, that being said, below are the changes.
  • Retirement of Flagships
Flagships have largely gone unused on SWRP as they are fundamentally unfriendly to build. The old rules surrounding them do not incentivize major factions into creating them, nor do they offer much of a reward for doing so. The work required to acquire a ship of this design is simply not worth it. Therefore, we are removing them in favor of something new.

[*]Introduction of Super Star Destroyers / Dreadnoughts
  • We have heard the demand countless times. Major factions want access to these ships. Fundamentally they will be the same on SWRP, so call them by either name. The fact of the matter is, we're going to give access to these ships.
  • Acquiring a Super Star Destroyer / Dreadnought will be restricted to Major Factions. They will follow the Dominion rules.
  • A major faction, upon completing their second dominion of the calendar month, may begin their third and final eligible Dominion as a SSD / Dreadnought dominion thread. This will follow the same rules as a third dominion, meaning that a Minor Faction has the ability to initiate a Rebellion, per Dominion rules. The following outcomes determine the result:
Major Faction Wins Rebellion (Or no rebellion takes place within allotted time): The major faction may submit a unique SSD/Dreadnought.
  • Minor Faction Wins Rebellion: Provided the minor faction meets all requirements to go major, and they choose to do so, they may steal the dreadnought reward and submit their own.
  • Minor Faction Wins Rebellion: If the minor faction wins the rebellion, however does not meet the requirements to become major, or they choose not to go major, neither side conquers the hex, and both sides forfeit the SSD / Dreadnought.

[*]A Major Faction may not submit a SSD / Dreadnought until after the tenth day window of rebellions closes.
[*]A SSD / Dreadnought will be permitted to range from 3,001m to 10,000m. This number is subject to change.

[*]Restricted Materials Overhaul

Restricted Items
Submissions using Restricted Items will be reviewed by a Role-play Judge and may be declined depending on the quality and effort of the submitter.

  1. Mission completion may grant a maximum of Limited production, depending on the submission. Each completed mission thread only counts for one submission.

  2. Any submission which use a Factory Submitted base material based on a Restricted Material (e.g., A Phrik Armourweave submission) will a have a maximum production value of Semi-Unique.

  3. If a restricted material is traded between characters, you must link to the purchase/trade thread of the restricted item along with the seller's original resource obtaining thread.

  4. Under no circumstances are two restricted materials allowed per submission. New alloys created by blending two or more restricted materials are not allowed.
Submissions with a restricted material from the list below will not require a completed ‘restricted material’ objective thread for Technology as long as the item that is being submitted is labeled as Unique and maintain well balanced strengths, weaknesses, and features. Companies and/or Workshops at Tier 6 may utilize materials from the list below in Technology, Vehicle Creation, and Starships as long as the item that is being submitted is labeled as Unique. One material from the list below, chosen by a company or workshop (Limit 1 per writer) upon reaching Tier 6 may submit Technology, Starships, and Vehicles using that material at Semi-Unique. Regardless of this, a Factory Judge may deny a submission on concept if they feel that balance is unlikely to be found due to the nature of the submission. For more extensive productions, please see the 'Restricted Materials Mission' section below.
Restricted Materials Mission
Write a thread in a convincing manner detailing the quest for, construction of, or discovery of the material or item in question. There is no set post count, however a complete story should be told. Submissions containing extraordinarily strong materials or providing substantial benefits may warrant a judge requesting additional effort or edits made to the submission to adhere to forum standards and balancing for fair play. The item(s) below are not included as free of RM missions for characters or companies/workshops.
Banned Items
i. Banned Items are not permitted to be used in canon role-play threads on Star Wars RP: Chaos without the explicit permission of the SWRP Staff Team.
ii. Banned Items are not permitted to be used in submissions within the Factory without the explicit permission of the SWRP Staff Team.
iii. Banned Items are only permitted to be used in Non-Canon role-play threads or Non-Canon Campaign threads.

  • Minor Changes
All templates have been updated to correct errors in information and grammar.
  • All cookie cutters have been updated to correct errors in information, grammar, uniformity, and to reflect new templates.
  • Factory Standardized Rules have been updated to correct errors in outdated information, grammar, and to reflect changes.
  • Factory Submission Of The Month - Going forward, the factory staff will highlight and announce one submission per month that stands out among the rest as recognition for unique ideas, excellent aesthetics, and other exemplary attributes.

Note: These changes will not be reflected within the factory rules or templates until they are finalized and implemented upon re-opening.

We hope these changes are a positive improvement, and will continue to welcome feedback as to how to better improve the factory going forward. Furthermore, these changes will be reviewed in the coming months for effectiveness, balance, and potential misuse. They will be modified accordingly during this trial period.

While the lack of numbers will definitely make some submissions a little more vague, I for one am glad for the standardization of sizes/weights of ranged weapons. It'll definitely streamline submission processes, and while more specific sizes won't be necessarily required, their addition will (instead of complicate things) give more character to submissions.

Excited to see how this goes!

I can see a few potential conflicts regarding existing mandates and rebellion exemptions with the new SSD/flagship rules. Will there be a mandate overhaul/ accompanying mandates with these updates? I can go into greater detail if you need, re: Dominion Rebellion exemption mandates and such if you'd like either here or offline.

Looks like some considerable effort has gone into these so far though, thumbs up factory!

How do mandates relating to the rebellion-ability of dominions impact this? Are major factions with the appropriate mandate able to create a non-rebellable third dominions for flagship purposes?

In Umbris Potestas Est
I... do have some minor complaints about the maximum length of Super Star Destroyers/Dreadnoughts. 10km seems far too short given that the Galactic Empire was able to build and maintain multiple 15-19km long dreadnoughts. No faction is truly comparable to the Empire as such, but certainly a faction could successfully operate at least a single dreadnought of between 15-20km in length.

This is a question we'll have to weigh on a staff level. I don't currently have a solid answer for this, but thank you for bringing it up!

Place ya bets!
The Galactic Empire, probably.

The GA will make some Mon Cal monstrosity, the Sith Empire some hideous spiky thing (if I know [member="Darth Carnifex"] - and I do), and the First Order doesn't need no stinking Super Star Destroyer. So passé.

I used to have real trouble understanding the net benefit of the rule about Flagships being absolutely non-transferable. It caused all kinds of unnecessary complications and never seemed to achieve much of worth. I'm very glad to see that rule is gone. Good call.

I'm scared. It's hard enough for a middle-ranking officer like me to fight in fleet battles with a frigate or cruiser-sized vessel, but if the dreadnoughts end up being anything like the Mandator-II or even Assertor-class SSDs, I'll be instantly screwed, even if i'm part of a larger fleet.

I wouldn't worry too much. There's almost always a way for smaller ships to play a role. I've seen some fantastic innovation from frigate captains.

fixed that for you

but this honestly sounds a little better, though the recoil and stopping power one will add some new things to think about. The new lengths can give something interesting to play with.

I, for one, welcome our new template overlords! And also thank you for your time, work, and dedication in all of this.

Don't let the numbers get in the way of the story. Jorus and I didn't even have frigates in one thread. We went up against the First Order fleet with a pair of light freighers. The factory is a means of introducing new story elements to the board, but those elements don't have to drive the story.
