So a few people have expressed interest in doing a shipbuilding workshop and getting some pointers on how to do it. The Guide is comprehensive, but there's a lot going on, and it can seem intimidating to some.
So here's the plan. Every day, I'll post another chunk of the starship template. You edit that chunk of the template into your first post, and fill in what you think is best. Ask questions here or in PM, as many questions as you want, but only if you're participating in the workshop. Catch up at any point, don't feel compelled to keep pace with me. It's really not too bad, though.
I'm tagging people who've expressed interest, but this is open at any point.

Pick an image you like. Nobody can help you with that, or tell you for sure if it's being used, though I do have a good number of ships stashed away at http://varanin.deviantart.com/favourites
If your image turns out to be in use or otherwise not appropriate, this is not the end of the world. Don't get discouraged.
Oh, and please, please make sure your image is practical if you're making a warship. Spines and sails and split hulls and skinny hulls and narrow points and tentacular whatnots are a baaaaaad idea for structural integrity.
Let's talk about intent. Lotta people have trouble with this one. The Guide basically says what not to do, but here are some common ways to go about it. This doesn't have to be art, you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Protip: If your manufacturer isn't a household name, link to it.

- To create a standard, 'vanilla' starfighter for mass production and public sale
- To fill the Light Star Destroyer gap in the Mandalorian armory
- To create a personal transport, mobile home and base of operations for Captain Rolf Skyjumper
- To create a dedicated hospital ship for the Levantine Sanctum
- To create a humane prison ship for the Republic
- To create a modular biological and alchemical research base for the Sith Council

The Guide goes into a ton of detail on Development Threads -- how not to do them, what counts, etc. Since we're workshopping a new submission from scratch, let's not worry about dev threads right now, unless you reeeeeally want to make something that would need one. If you're unsure whether your concept would need a dev thread, just ask me. ***
Manufacturer. All I can really say on this is that the Guide covers all bases. If you want to make your ship for a specific faction and they're cool with that, mention it under Affiliation and we can talk about what some appropriate shipbuilders for that faction are. I personally have shot-calling, permission-granting ability for Iron Crown Productions (a shipbuilder that exports throughout the Unknown Regions, as well as making the Lords of the Fringe military) and Silk Holdings (a shipbuilder that exports throughout the Outer Rim and a good chunk of elsewhere, and makes some military-grade stuff). Both of those firms make everything from starfighters to personal transports to capital ships. So, basically, if you want to make something big and shiny and don't want to go ask a faction head for permission, consider permission granted by default on those two manufacturers. There are also plenty of canon corporations that I don't think have owners on this board, so those would be easy too. Protip: If your manufacturer isn't a household name, link to it.

Model. This is one spot where people get tripped up a LOT. The name of your submission could be Popo-class Bulk Freighter or WL-372 Popo-class Bulk Freighter, but the Model could be WL-372 Popo-class Bulk Freighter in both cases. Random letter-number combinations are usually fine. Some kinds of ships have special things, like the YT/YZ/YWhatever freighters from CEC, or the TIE/ln, TIE/sa, etc. designations for TIE fighters. Or you could just put Popo-class Bulk Freighter, just the name of the class, and that's fine too.***
Affiliation. Broadly speaking, here are your choices.- A faction
- Personal/Independent
- Publicly Available
