Private Distractions

Amani watched with surprise as the spirit was grabbed. It seemed equally unprepared for its own sudden tangibility, and despite initial protestations, was quickly silenced by Elpsis' Force-powered weapon.

As quickly as it came, the Rakatan spirit dissipated in a cloud of dark smoke, leaving the two women alone once more. Amani dropped her hand, feeling a bit more drained by the experience than she had expected to be, and sighed, "Well, shit."

"That guy thought he was a lot more important than he was,"
Still she couldn't help a smirk. The rest of the fight hadn't quite been the stress relief she had hoped, but taking that guy down a peg felt satisfying.

"Sums up Sith and similar scum. Thugs and bullies with big egoes who never did honest work a day in their life," Elpsis remarked, palpable disdain in her voice. Of course, Sith and the like would seldom miss the chance to whine about being oppressed...because obviously denying them permission to commit genocide was evil. Fortunately, there was a cure for that: a lightsabre to the head.

She frowned. "Didn't sound like he was out and possessing Raiders for long. I wonder where he came from. Are there any ruins or something nearby?" she wondered.

Amani shrugged in agreement, and walked over to rest on a nearby rock, “Sounds about right.” As the adrenaline of battle faded, she felt it replaced with dissatisfaction. What started as an excuse to vent some frustration ultimately left her feeling no less frustrated. Amani simply couldn’t find relief in bloodshed, regardless of how necessary or justified it may be.

“Hell if I know. At least he’s gone now.” The Jedi ran a row of fingers through her hair and sighed. She had a pretty good understanding of the area, but as it was, Tython was home to all kinds of ruins. “Appreciate the help. That’s at least one less problem our little camp has to deal with.” Better than nothing, especially given how many inconveniences they’ve been dealt already.

"Just wondering whether there might be more wherever he came from," Elpsis said with a shrug, and stretched, the servos in her whirring at the motion. She reached out with the Force as she tried to get a gauge on the surrounding area. She did not specialise in the more mystical aspects of the Force, but perhaps she would sense ambient Force energy.

However, she couldn't help notice the Mirialan's consternation. She could not determine her facial expression, but she could feel the frustration roilling inside her. "Something up? You seem...frustrated." Elpsis' own stance was...workman-like. A group of scum had been put six feet under. They'd be replaced by a different group of scumbags soon enough. Probably more dangerous ones. Rinse, repeat. She didn't enjoy it...but she'd accepted it.

Amani shrugged, "Just been a messy few days, I guess." She looked at the woman with a flat, indiscernible expression. The battle prior had struck her hard, and the weight still carried even after. As it probably would for a long time. This was merely one more annoyance to pile on the rest.

The Jedi stood up to pace, "Feel like I haven't even been able to sleep without something going wrong. So, sure, I guess I'm a little frustrated." Gradually she walked back towards the ridge they arrived from, "All this fighting's just not in my blood." The irony of her Jedi training; Being a warrior who hated violence.

Being physically blind, Elpsis could not perceive Amani's expression in the first place, whether it was indiscernible or not. Truth be told, she didn't really know what the Jedi looked like. "The galaxy's a bad place. Always has been. Bad things happen in it and even worse things happen if people who can don't do anything," she remarked with a shrug. "It's what you signed up for, but you're facing a horrible enemy and Sithies won't stop just because their Sith'ari of the week died. You just have to be strong, or get assigned elsewhere." The response might seem brusque, but by Elpsis' standards she was being nice.

Amani scoffed. Elpsis' bluntness wasn't something she usually encountered, and in these particular circumstances, it seemed to set her off a bit, "Yeah? What about all the people who didn't sign up? Cause I can speak to at least a whole planet of them right about now," She gestured in the direction of the camp, "They're just shit out of luck? 'Sorry everything you've ever known and loved almost got destroyed in our little fight, try not to be too much of a baby about it'. Right?"

"How are we supposed to get anywhere better with that line of thinking? Whatever-"
The Mirialan grumbled, and kept walking. This kind of debate would only annoy her further.

Blunt was Elpsis' standard mode. She preferred bluntness to flowery speech and coddling. Both tended to trigger her. She remained calm in the face of the Jedi's outburst, looking unimpressed. "Welcome to the galaxy. War's hell. Is it fair what happened to them? No. Should they get help rebuilding? Yes. Will sugarcoating and sulking make it better? No. Because Sith aren't gonna stop wrecking lives and slaughtering innocent people. What do you wanna do? Wave a white flag and beg whichever tyrant replaces their last 'dark lord' to be less evil? And guess what, more people die," she responded caustically.

"This has happened before, it will happen again. I'm afraid wishing doesn't change that," she said matter-of-factly. "If you care about innocents, you'll fight for them and help them protect themselves. Or go. Not my problem." She doubted her words would have resonated with the Jedi, but that wasn't her problem. So she headed away.

"Pfft. Yeah, cause that's exactly what I said we should do." Amani scoffed, equally unimpressed by the other woman putting words in her mouth. "If we can't bother to show a little humanity, then there's nothing we're fighting for. It's violence for the sake of it. So, sorry that finding all of it a little disheartening is such an inconvenience." She'd never claimed to give up fighting or anything of the sort, but apparently Elpsis decided to interpret her dissatisfaction that way.

Amani didn't particularly care, and as the woman turned away, she was happy to do the same, "Thanks for the help." The Jedi grumbled, and made her way back to camp.
