C / V ◆ RUNNING A CON
Capricia Volante
LOCATION / CANTO BIGHT WITH / MR. LESARAV
The small yacht floated elegantly toward the waterfall from the air, and its knife-edge prow cut into the water, seamlessly transitioning from flight to sailing like it was nothing. On the deck, Capricia Volante stood with a champagne flute in one hand, the bubbles tickling her nose, the other holding the hand of an older man. Washa Lesarav, because it was the only way to stop him from putting it somewhere he oughtn't.

It was getting more difficult to keep the man at arm's length. Capricia -- acting under one of her aliases, Inez Corin -- had run into him at a yacht party earlier in the day. He was wealthy -- too wealthy for his own good, the kind of wealthy that made him believe that everything and everyone he saw could be had for a price. That was the kind of man who gave Capricia the chance to make a quick cred. So when he had propositioned her, it was a no-brainer.

After all, he could be well-assured that Inez Corin was no gold-digger, no homewrecker. She was one of his kind: wealthy, possibly titled, definitely entitled, and in it for the thrill. Everyone knew her, of course. Inez, good old Inez. That was the way things worked in these circles; no one did know her, but everyone was so afraid of being caught out not knowing someone who so obviously belonged that they simply went along with things. Half would swear to have shared a table with her at the Cantonica Club and the other half would have sworn she covered their bets at the Fathier races before mumsy and pupsy could wire the credits. Our Inez, always reliable, game for a laugh.

The craft approached the docks, where they were met by a rickshaw. Capricia set her untouched champagne flute down and helped the older gentleman -- maybe twice her age, no more, though he walked with the frailty of an elderly grandfather because of the amount of alcohol he had consumed -- down the gangway and into the rickshaw that was waiting for them. The ride to the hotel was fast, and once there he checked into his suite while bellhops handled the luggage. "Ah, Mr. Lesarav. And, Miss...?" asked the manager, letting his eyes linger on Capricia. He looked conflicted for a moment; these types always seemed to recognize the scent of tawdry scandal, and though he thought she was somehow out of place, Capricia didn't look like some cheap floozy looking to rip off his client.

"Mrs. Lesarav," Lesarav said. He knew this drill better than the manager. Not his first time, she thought, offering the manager a cool, dignified smile.

The manager's eyes widened a little and he bowed his head. "Ah, of course. Here you are." He slid two keycards across the desk. "These will grant you access to the penthouse room and serve as payment for anything you require while you're here -- at the restaurants, the shops, the casino cashier, or any of our transportation or leisure facilities."

"Mmh," grunted Mr. Lesarav.

"If you'll just sign here, sir," the manager said, presenting a datapad. "Confirming your permission to charge the source we have on file."

Lesarav signed with the kind of mild indignation wealthy people sometimes had when being confronted with the pedestrian details of spending it, grunting again.

In the elevator Lesarav kissed the back of Capricia's hand, up her wrist and forearm before, luckily, a trio of guests entered. He had some capacity for shame, after all, which was good. This gig relied on obscene wealth (check), limited self-control (double-check), and shame -- shame that would prevent him from calling the police when he realized he'd been taken. If he realized he'd been taken. For some of them, they never noticed. Some people have too much money, Capricia had thought to herself.

Once alone in the penthouse, Capricia popped the cork on the bubbly that the management had thoughtfully provided for their high-rolling guest and his wife while Washa loosened his tie and slurred about all the things he wanted to do to her. Thank goodness it didn't come to that. All she had to endure was a little light slobbering on her shoulder and neck before he passed out. He had lasted longer than Capricia thought possible, given the total volume of liquor he had consumed over the last few hours.

"Sleep tight," 'Inez' muttered as she washed her shoulder and neck in the 'fresher with a washcloth so hot she could hardly stand it. "Now, time to go shopping."

[ Headphone Warning ]

The hostile lock alarm screamed through the cockpit again.

Rafe reacted before the display finished painting the threat. He hauled the controls over, rolled the Shyyyo onto her side and dropped beneath a tumbling slab of rock that swallowed most of the forward viewport.

A missile passed somewhere above them and detonated a second later. Shields flashed white around the cockpit while fragments rattled across the hull. Red laser fire cut through the debris behind them, blue ion bolts following close enough to strike the asteroid and throw molten stone into space.

"Missile defeated," Kase reported.

"Good job, keep it up!" Rafe shouted, as he gritted his teeth and yanked the controls.

The YT-2400 came out of the roll with barely enough room for Rafe to straighten her. Another asteroid was already drifting across their path. He shoved the nose down, felt the inertial dampers fight the change, then brought the ship around the underside with the hull close enough that the proximity alarm joined everything else already complaining at him.

Out in open space, the pirates would have been watching the Shyyyo's engines disappear ahead of them. Here, three KGDefenders mostly meant Rafe could reach the next problem faster.

"Four vessels remain in pursuit, sir."

"Still four?"

"Yes," Kase replied simply.

"You could have lied."

"I believe honesty is the best policy, sir."

Rafe pushed the throttles forward anyway.

"Not with pirates..."

The asteroid field ahead looked almost solid on the sensor display. Thousands of contacts shifted against one another as the computer tried to predict paths through millions more beyond them. Some were little more than gravel. Others were large enough to have their own fractured ridgelines and shadowed craters.

A clear run lasted seconds at best.

Laser fire came first, driving him away from the wider gap ahead. Ion fire crossed behind it, placed where the Shyyyo would have been if he'd taken the obvious turn.

"They're getting less stupid."

"Most unfortunate."

Rafe kicked the freighter sideways, sending the Shyyyo between two rotating rocks with her dorsal surface nearly perpendicular to both. One of the pursuing ships tried to follow the turn and appeared on the targeting display for half a heartbeat.

Rafe fired the forward ion cannons.

Blue energy caught the fighter across its shields before the asteroid carried it out of sight. He was already turning for the next gap when something struck them from behind.

The cockpit lights dimmed, recovered, then flickered once more.

"Port shielding down nine percent from the previous reading."

"Previous reading being when?"

"Thirty-seven seconds ago."

"Stop giving me percentages unless they become frightening."

"I can establish a threshold."

Rafe glanced across at the droid.

"Just hold on!"

With a sharp slice between another pair of asteroids, the Shyyyo skimmed the rock, her shields flaring as they knocked stony debris free in passing.

The pirates had been considerably more pleasant when the weapons currently sitting in his cargo hold belonged to them. The agreement had been straightforward enough. Pick up the shipment. Carry it to Yavin IV and await final delivery instructions. Apparently somebody had reconsidered the part where the weapons actually left their hands. There had even been an apology over comms before the first shot, which he had not accepted.

A fresh lock tone sounded.

"Forward contact, sir."

One of the pirates had broken away from the others.

"Found number four."

The fighter came around the face of an asteroid ahead and opened fire.

Rafe pulled hard left. Laser bolts passed close enough to flare across the cockpit glass, then ion fire followed and forced him lower, exactly where the fighter wanted him. The three contacts behind were closing.

"The asteroids ahead of us are converging together, sir."

"I know."

"We should find another escape angle."

"I know!"

"It should be soon, sir, otherwi--"

"I said I know!"

Two larger asteroids were drifting closer ahead, leaving an opening between them that would not last long. Beyond them, the sensor picture thinned.

The nav display already had Cantonica loaded. Their contract still called for Yavin IV, but after the ambush Rafe had decided on a detour before they continued the run. The hyperdrive had been waiting for a usable vector for nearly twelve minutes.

"Kase, give me the jump corridor."

"Present course does not provide sufficient clearance."

"I didn't ask about present course."

The droid went quiet while the computer recalculated.

Rafe pushed more power into the drives and the Shyyyo surged forward.

The fighter ahead fired again. Rafe dipped under the burst and brought the ship racing through the narrow gap, the YT-2400 rotated sideways on its axis to barely fit through the space. Behind him, the three pursuing craft pulled off in a panic as the gap closed in the freighter's wake.

"Decoy, now!"

Kase released one of the Mimic units.

A new contact bloomed behind them and split away on a different course as the Shyyyo rolled and skirted the largest asteroid, keeping it between sensor locks. As the small drone entered open space, its holoprojectors flickered to life and built the false image of a vessel similar to the Shyyyo. Three of the pirates circled up and over the asteroids, opening fire on the decoy as it led them in the opposite direction.

But one stayed with Rafe.

"Jump solution."

The route flashed green just as open space appeared beyond the last cluster.

Rafe drove the throttles forward.

The Shyyyo cleared the rocks with one pirate vessel still close enough to fire. Red bolts crossed behind them. One caught the rear shields and shook the cockpit hard, but the hyperdrive indicator stayed green.

"Punching it!"

Rafe pulled the lever.

The stars stretched and the asteroid field disappeared into blue-white hyperspace.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Rafe eased his hands off the controls and flexed his fingers. His shoulders hurt. Somewhere behind the cockpit, something smelled faintly overheated. Kase began working through the ship's diagnostics.

"Shield recovery is underway. No critical damage detected. The port array will require inspection after landing."

"Cantonica first."

"Agreed."

Rafe watched the hyperspace tunnel until Kase spoke again.

"We will still require another crew member."

Rafe knew what he meant.

The man they'd hired for the run had gone down during the ambush before they reached the Shyyyo. There had been no time to go back for him. The freighter could be flown without another body aboard, but the rest of the job was another matter. They still had the weapons, an unknown final delivery point waiting beyond Yavin IV, and the pirates now knew Rafe had escaped with both ship and cargo.

"Yeah. One, at least."

"I can place a listing while we are in transit. A short-notice contract. Cantonica destination. Temporary work. Discretion preferred. Combat experience beneficial."

Rafe considered it, then nodded toward the communications station.

"Don't mention the weapons."

"Naturally."

"Don't mention the pirates either."

"That may affect applicant enthusiasm."

"That's the idea."

Kase turned toward the terminal.

"Compensation?"

They had hours before Cantonica. Enough time for the listing to get ahead of them and, hopefully, enough for somebody nearby to answer before the Shyyyo reached Canto Bight. Then they could turn back toward Yavin IV and finish the run with someone else aboard.

"Enough to get a quick answer."

Kase began composing the listing.
