Lemke
Gypsy Space Ape

Name: Death Mug, known as Udu to the BeduiDesignation: Non-sentient
Homeworld: Bendali
Language: None
Average height of adults: About .8 meters
Skin color: Green-yellow with a red rim
Hair color: A single green or yellow 'lid' leaf
Breathes: Type I
Strengths:
Hypnotist: Death Mugs produce an extremely potent chemical which puts mammals in an accepting and suggestable state. This chemical is produced by a large gland inside the 'pitcher' of the plant, used to attract it's prey as detailed below. It should be noted that unless they're in a very large group (which is why people who grow these plants where breath masks) Death Mugs have no effect on anything larger then a large rat. It should also be noted that the effects of the chemical wear off after about a minute, so if for whatever reason the prey is out of smelling-distance (about 15 meters) for awhile, they'll be able to scurry off to live another day.
Fast eater: Death Mug's digestive acid is extremely potent, meaning a Death Mug could digest something the size of a large rat in about six hours.
Weaknesses:
Needs constant water: Death Mugs grow in swampy areas of the rainforest, and they need large amounts of water to survive.
Needs humid conditions: For the same reason they need large amounts of water, Death Mugs need a very humid enviroment. Taking one out of a humid enviroment will result in them first stopping their production of chemicals within hours, and dying within two days.
Needs mammals: Death Mugs require certain chemicals only found in mammals to survive- they cnant live off just frogs and crickets. The plant can, however, go long periods without eating: up to a galactic standard month.
Small harvest: The chemical-producing gland that Death Mugs are cultivated for (see below) only holds a small amount of liquid, meaning eight or nine Death Mugs must be harvested (and therefore killed) for one dose strong enough to effect a human-sized mammal for 15-20 minutes. Said dose must also be concentrated as not to wear off after a minute. This cocentrated form can be injected, as well, but it lasts for a far shorter duration of time. This makes their chemical extremely expensive.
Vunerable to stimulants: A potent stimulant or an adrenline shot can override the chemical hypnotism conducted by a Death Mug.
Distinctions: A pitcher (or mug) shaped, acid-filled plant with a single leaf.
Average Lifespan: About four galactic standard years in the wild
Races: Nones
Estimated Population: Rare in Bendali swamps, illegally cultivated by Bendalians.
Diet: Small mammals
Communication: None
Culture: Death Mugs are illegally cultivated by the Bendalian Spice trades as an interregation drug and truth serum, as well as a pleasure drug to rich spice addicts, due to it's calming effects and pain-numbing abilities. It is considered too dangerous and expensive, however, to be used as a medical drug. Large amounts of the plants are grown in humid greenhouses, only for their glands to be removed as soon as they finish seeding for the first time- waiting until they seed so that they can create new plants.
Technology level: None
General behavior: Death Mugs have a very unique feeding method. Once a Death Mug is large enough to contain very small mammals such as mice, it begins secreting a very potent chemical which attracts mammals, giving them a feeling of security and making them more then gullible. The chemical is potent enough, in fact, that small animals such as mice and, when the plant gets larger, anything as big as a very large rat, will be so attracted to the scent... that they will literally crawl into the digestive juices of the plant. That's where the other use of the chemical comes in: it numbs pain. So, luckily for the mouse, the prey dosen't feel any pain when he climbs into his doom. The plant then proceeds to shut the lid-like leaf growing over it's rim over the opening, ensuring that more of the chemical is focused on the dying animal rather then on attracting new prey, so that it will not try to escape. The acid is powerful enough to digest even most bones and teeth with enough time.
When the fleshy bits of it's prey are gone, the plant opens it's 'lid' again for more food, letting it's dangerous scent out into the swamp once more.
History: Death Mugs, known as Udu to the Bedui who avoided them whenever possible, were discovered by Humans over a hudnred years after they first settled the planet. They were soon reconized for their dangerous but useful capibilities. For a short while, the plant's chemicals were used as a medical sedative, but when it was found too dangerous (it made the patients much too suggestable; so much so that they could obey if you told them to jump out a window) for medical use, it was made illegal. That didn't stop the spice cartels, however.
