"The Digger's Combat Patch"
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Unit Name: Concord Subterranean Armor Regiment - "The Diggers"
  • Affiliation: Silver Jedi Concord
  • Classification: Mechanized Infantry
  • Description: More commonly known as "The Diggers", the Concord Subterranean Armor Regiment is specialized formation designed to conduct warfare underground. What once was the realm of a small group of dedicated sappers for simple field engineering work has necessarily become a much more common necessity due to the use of Bryn'adul forces effectively using massive, Servitor worms in their forces. To that end, the Concord's response was to commission specifically designed vehicles from Lucerne Labs to conduct underground combat against these massive foes and then fill their ranks largely with disposable bio-mechanical synthetic soldiers. Rushed into service, the Diggers are largely an unknown quality on the galactic battleground, and it remains to be seen if the quirky vehicles which provide the Diggers with most of their abilities will truly be effective.
COMBAT INFORMATION:
  • Unit Size: Large
  • Unit Availability: Common
  • Unit Experience: Trained
  • Equipment:
  • Combat Function: The Diggers are a fairly insular unit due to their specialized nature and large droid contingent. Most the regiments upper ranks are filled with career infantrymen officers and a smaller number of field engineers who provide the necessarily expertise in order to conduct combat underground. This is a relatively new field with highly new and specialized equipment. The experimental nature consequently shows itself in the regiment's tactics, which are still largely untested. Typically, a small number of Clodhoppers act as a forward vanguard, making widely disparate tunnels that advance toward suspected enemies, while the greater part of the regiment waits to follow the best route across the battlefield. Once in combat, Clodhoppers and their onboard infantry fight like typical armored mechanized units, with each supporting the other as necessarily. Unlike traditional mechanized forces, these units are backed by specialized vehicles that are designed to alter the environment around them or trap the Servitor worms employed by the Bryn'adul. These elements are employed on an as needed basis based on the changing tactical situation, with a few of them typically accompanying the initial advances while the rest are held in a strategic reserve.
Strengths:
  • Underground Warriors: Unlike most conventional ground forces, the Diggers are extremely capable of fighting underground thanks to specialized vehicles and training.
  • Shapers: The Diggers are quite adept at shaping the environment around them to their advantage, frequently by tunneling elaborate earthworks through the use of their tunneling vehicles and field droids, as well as changing the atmosphere with their Kybuck Chemical Response Vehicles.
Weaknesses:
  • Overly Specialized: The Diggers are fairly specialized forces for fighting underground only, and do not tend to fair well in other environments. As an example of this, their primary combat vehicles, the Clodhoppers do not have any flank weapons (it's not typically an issue in a tunnel), which can be a devastating problem on an open battlefield. Similarly, the basic infantryman's weapon in the unit is a shotgun - great for the close quarters of a cave, but a weapon with far too short of range to typically be effective on the open battlefield.
  • Low Manpower: While classified technically as an mechanized infantry regiment largely analogous to a Repulsorlift Regiment, the Clodhoppers that make up the bulk of the unit's vehicles do not have the full carrying capacity, meaning that frequently do not have as many actual infantrymen to commit to close quarters combat that the typical regiment should.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Bryn'adul threat has forced the galaxy to change with them. Genocide by the alien invaders has forced the Silver Jedi Concord to constantly seek new ways to overcome these threats, resulting in dozens of new technologies, forces, and techniques. The Concord Subterranean Armor Regiment is just another innovation in this long and ever-expanding list. With the use of massive Servitor Worms, the Concord commissioned the Directorate and the Lucerne Labs consortium to provide an effective means of facing these massive beasts. While Lucerne Labs was able to quickly deliver some of these specialized vehicles, it became apparent that their piecemeal and irregular deployment was not proving as effective as the Concord needed. To that end, the Directorate was able to form an established organization and tactical doctrine to incorporate these technological advancements into practical, deployable forces. The resulting "Diggers" are unsurprisingly known for just that - digging deep into the ground to fight against enemy forces or carve out hidden strongholds for other Silver Jedi Concord forces.
