Community Vote On Superweapons

Should we allow superweapons on the board?

I just think, if we leave them strictly to Staff, we know the outcome and ending.

We know that we're going to win, and stories won't have the same value as they would if we wrote it our way.

I understand both sides, but the more I chew on this, the more I realize the same thing.

Stories would work out better for the community. I know, everyone has their own opinions and is rightfully entitled to them.

I'm just sticking to what I see as factual information. If we allow the Staff to hold our hands through the event, then we know the end.

Well I already voted but to play the field.

What is star wars without superweapons? I mean honestly there are many franchises but only in Star Wars has there been so many then just a laser on the moon or a weather device... or earthquake machine. I mean the greatest thing Luke ever did was blow up the Death Star after that sure he "beat" the emperor.... not really, he disabled the shield generator to destroy the death star not really. That is just for the movies the ones people usually see first.

I agree.

One of the Undying's weaknesses was that it extremely fragile from attacks on the inside. So in theory, couldn't you just make a specialised boarding craft? Then problem solved. Superweapon destroyed.

Speaking as someone who's main passtime is fleeting, the Undying raises some questions about how superweapons would be handled. Suppose said superweapon is employed on a fleet I'm commanding (or a planet-killer used on a planet people are on, or one-hit-ship-killer used on a single ship, etc. etc.)? Unless it's been set up beforehand that's not a terribly interesting way to have a character die, even in an event or something. So if superweapons are allowed, will there be rules governing their use and their effectiveness? Are players expected to react, uh, realistically? Or would there be a 'get out of jail free' card for people who should've died ('realistically').

I'm not opposed to them in principle. They've got a storied history in Star Wars and can be great set-pieces or plot points, if used right. But they also have a lethality usually not present in play-by-post RP's, and there's considerations that need to be made before we all go and open Pandora's Box here.

The problem won't be destroying the weapon, the problem will be the faction who owns it destroying it and the OOC bickering that will follow.

Make them event only. Make them so big and so destructive that former enemies need to stand shoulder to shoulder to take it on. Thats the only reason a super weapon of any kind should exist, to give a common cause: Survival.

The kicker is, for me, not every superweapon is a kill-errything monstrosity. Some are more flexible than others, can have more behind them, can be used in more interesting ways. Not everything is a Sun Crusher or Death Star. You also get things like torpedo spheres, World Devastators, thought bombs...

I am unsure of what to vote.

I wasn't aware Torpedo Spheres were lumped in with Superweapons.

I voted no. While I enjoy the idea of Star Dreadnoughts and massive superweapons for story purposes and having the BBET (Big Bag Evil Thing) to kill off, I don't think anyone would have the respect for them to not abuse them. Even I'd be tempted, and I try to temper myself.

We have people out there smart enough to make stuff to counter Superweapons.
What do we do to combat big weapons? generally? make bigger ones.

Yes, we have smart people. Yes we could combat it. But, when i have a look at the disagreements that prop up on this board, we tend to fight over the stupidest and smallest of things. Like, i dunno, anti infantry guns on a hospital roof? :p

Will they be a fun aspect? Absolutely. Can all members be trusted all the time not to lose their heads when handling something like this? No.

Administrators will have to vote on whether it is a superweapon or not first.

1. How this works: You build a Death Star. FJ passes it. Admin passes it. Good to go!

2. You use it IC, because why not?

3. You get reported for it, with the reporter claiming it's a superweapon.

4. Admins are alerted, vote thread goes up in the Admin forum. We vote on whether it's a superweapon or not.

5. Majority agrees it's a superweapon.

6. Rules regarding superweapons now apply to the Death Star you built.

*Dislike*

This will be abused.
