These squadrons are held in reserve for rapid deployment in response to emerging threats or major conflicts, providing a flexible and powerful deterrent against aggression.
- The Commonwealth Starfighter Corps is the Commonwealth's independent aerospace warfare branch, responsible for the training, organization, and operational deployment of all military aerospace forces. It is not a subordinate aviation arm of the fleet; it is a coequal service that owns Commonwealth aerospace doctrine in its entirety. Every military pilot, sensor operator, and aerospace specialist is trained, certified, and administered by the Corps, regardless of where they are ultimately posted. This centralization ensures that whether a squadron is launching from a fleet battlecarrier, screening a planetary invasion, or holding an orbital defense line over a core system, it flies the same doctrine, speaks the same tactical language, and answers to the same professional standards.
Although the Corps is most visible through its starfighter pilots, they are a minority of its strength. The service is sustained by engineers, maintenance crews, command-and-control specialists, sensor and reconnaissance operators, logistics personnel, and dedicated rescue teams who collectively keep Commonwealth aerospace forces in the fight. Together they form a single institution dedicated to three enduring purposes: securing aerospace superiority, supporting the fleet and the Army wherever they fight, and ensuring that no Commonwealth pilot is left behind. - Reading the Structure: Two Axes
The Corps is organized along two distinct axes that should not be confused with one another, as conflating them is the most common source of misunderstanding.
The first axis is the echelon ladder, which answers a single question: how large is a formation, and who commands it? This is the chain that runs from a two-fighter Element up to a full Corps. It is purely a measure of size and command level.
The second axis is the Command structure, which answers a different question: what is a formation for, and whose operations does it serve? The Corps owns four major Commands, each built around a strategic mission rather than a unit size.
Every formation in the Corps therefore has a place on both axes at once. A squadron, for example, sits at the Squadron rung of the echelon ladder (its size) while belonging to one of the four Commands (its mission). The 12th Interceptor Squadron is a Squadron by size and a unit of Interceptor Command by mission; the two facts never compete because they describe different things. - Hierarchy: The hierarchy is listed below and is broken down into basic rank structure and then a brief overview of the organizational structure.
- Ranks are displayed in the chart below, the Commonwealth Starfighter Corp’s dress uniform color is ‘Thunderbird Blue.’ The Commonwealth Marine Commando’s ‘full dress’ or their ‘mess dress’ their highest formal uniform color is ‘Atmosphere Blue,’ Their ‘working uniforms’ are based on multi-terrain patterns, and consist of a jacket, trousers, with combat boots, and a t-shirt under the jacket. Or, may consist of ‘working uniforms’ in a flame resistant variant of coveralls in a ‘Field Green’ color.

The following is a brief overview of the organizational structure of the Commonwealth's Starfighter Corps.
Organizational Breakdown of the Commonwealth Starfighter Corps:
- Echelon Ladder (Unit Size and Command)
The operational forces of the Corps are organized into nested formations of increasing size. Fighter counts represent standard establishment strength and may vary with mission and availability.
- Element — Two starfighters. The smallest tactical unit; a mutually supporting pair that forms the foundation of all aerospace combat tactics.
- Flight — Four starfighters (two Elements), led by a Flight Lieutenant. The basic operational unit for patrols, escort, and reconnaissance sorties.
- Squadron — Twelve starfighters (three Flights), commanded by a Flight Captain. The primary operational unit, capable of sustained independent missions and usually specialized by role.
- Group — Thirty-six starfighters (three Squadrons), under a Major, supported by a Group Captain. Handles mission coordination and resource management across its squadrons.
- Wing — Seventy-two starfighters (two Groups), led by a Lieutenant Colonel, supported by a Wing Commander. Conducts large-scale operations and coordinates with other military branches.
- Division — Two hundred sixteen starfighters (three Wings), under a Colonel, supported by a Divisional Commander. Responsible for force projection and coordination with higher command.
- Corps — Six hundred forty-eight starfighters (three Divisions), led by a Flight Commodore. Oversees large-scale campaigns and joint support to allied forces.
Above the Corps echelon sits the General Staff — the Marshal of the Starfighter Corps, the Chief Flight Marshals, and the Flight Vice Marshals — and ultimately High Command, comprising the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Commander-in-Chief. This preserves the existing chain of command without alteration.
Command Structure (Mission and Purpose)
Where the echelon ladder measures size, the four major Commands define mission. The entire Corps is owned and administered by the Corps itself; the Commands are how it divides responsibility for the galaxy's different aerospace problems. All four answer upward to Starfighter Corps High Command and, through it, to the Joint Chiefs and the Commander-in-Chief.
Fleet Aviation Command oversees squadrons assigned to naval carrier groups. These units operate from fleet carriers as Carrier Air Wings in support of naval task forces. Their personnel remain members of the Starfighter Corps while operating under naval command — the mechanism by which the Corps supports the fleet without being absorbed into it.
- Interceptor Command is responsible for aerospace defense: fleet defense, hyperspace interception, and orbital patrol, protecting both Commonwealth territory and fleet formations.
- Strike Command oversees offensive aerospace forces conducting precision strikes against hostile fleets and installations, deploying alongside expeditionary task forces during major campaigns.
- Aerospace Guard is the reserve and territorial component, providing planetary defense, homeland security, and emergency response while serving as a trained reserve pool.
- Squadron Specializations: Within the Commands, squadrons are organized by operational role. Common types include:
- Interceptor Squadrons — Aerospace superiority and fleet defense.
- Strike Squadrons — Heavy attack against enemy ships and installations.
- Reconnaissance Squadrons — Long-range scouting, sensor operations, and early warning.
- Electronic Warfare Squadrons — Sensor disruption, jamming, and electronic warfare.
- Assault Squadrons — Close aerospace support for planetary ground operations.
- Aerospace Rescue and Recovery
- The Corps maintains dedicated Personnel Recovery teams charged with recovering downed pilots and stranded personnel. Operating specialized rescue craft and insertion teams capable of working in hostile environments, their mission includes recovering ejected pilots, rescuing stranded crews, and conducting combat search and rescue. These teams are central to Corps culture, the practical expression of the principle that no pilot is left behind.
- [OOC] Note on Structure for Players: Two things to keep straight when creating your own units:
- Echelon = size. Element, Flight, Squadron, Group, Wing, Division, Corps tell you only how big a formation is and who commands it. If you want to make a squadron, you're working at the Squadron rung — twelve fighters, a Flight Captain in command.
- Command = mission. Fleet Aviation, Interceptor, Strike, and Aerospace Guard tell you what a unit is for. Your squadron belongs to one of these depending on what it does.
- So a player-made unit has both: e.g. "the 24th Strike Squadron" is a Squadron (size) in Strike Command (mission). Pick one rung and one Command and you're consistent with the structure. Just speak to me if you want a hand placing a unit.
- Cross-Branch Assignments: Because all aerospace personnel belong to the Corps, the Corps can lend its formations to other branches without surrendering ownership of them. Two patterns are standard.
- In fleet operations, squadrons deploy aboard naval carriers as Carrier Air Wings attached to fleet task forces, flying under naval command while remaining Corps personnel administratively and doctrinally.
- In planetary operations, squadrons support Army formations with close air support, orbital overwatch, and escort during planetary campaigns.
- This arrangement lets the Commonwealth concentrate aerospace power wherever a theater demands it while keeping training, doctrine, and standards unified under a single service.
- Personnel of the Corps: Pilots are the most visible members of the Corps but a minority of its strength. The majority serve in roles that make aerospace operations possible:
- Starfighter maintenance and engineering crews
- Aerospace command-and-control specialists
- Reconnaissance and sensor operators
- Logistics and munitions personnel
- Rescue and recovery teams
- These personnel sustain the readiness, survivability, and effectiveness of every formation the Corps fields.
- Climate: Within the Commonwealth Starfighter Corps, there exists a culture of camaraderie, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to duty. Despite the inherent dangers of space combat and the ever-present threat of enemy incursions, members of the Corps maintain a positive and supportive atmosphere characterized by mutual respect and trust.
Starfighter squadrons operate as tightly-knit units, forging strong bonds through shared experiences and reliance on one another in the heat of battle. The organization fosters a spirit of teamwork and cooperation, with members encouraged to collaborate closely to achieve mission success and ensure the safety of their fellow comrades.
While the demands of frontline service can be intense and challenging, the Commonwealth Starfighter Corps provides comprehensive support programs and resources to assist personnel in managing stress, maintaining mental resilience, and fostering a healthy work-life balance. Open communication channels and accessible leadership contribute to a culture of inclusivity and supportiveness, where every member feels valued and empowered to contribute to the organization's success.Reputation: From the outside, the Commonwealth Starfighter Corps is widely regarded as a stalwart defender of Commonwealth interests and a symbol of strength and resolve in the face of adversity.
