Auteme really, really wanted to meet Mitth'raw'nuruodo.

Yes, he was dead, and yes, he'd been one of the greatest military commanders of the Galactic Empire, a regime known for its brutality and warmongering. But while she'd never admit it, she held the personal belief that Thrawn was slightly misunderstood by history. He'd been an artist. A collector, a connoisseur. Moreover he had an innate understanding of xenocultures despite being raised in one of the most strict nations in the galaxy and holding a high position in one of the most humanocentrist nations later in life. Auteme believed that a single conversation with him would give her more knowledge and understanding than a dozen books by the best authors. And she'd already read those books.

Alas, for now it was impossible. Maybe she'd uncover the secrets of time travel someday. But today, she'd appreciate a piece of art that Thrawn had once described as unique: Pantolomin's coral reefs. Built over thousands of years, they were considered to be among the most complex and beautiful structures in the galaxy. The Lomin species took many precautions with their native ecosystems. Thus, very few people were allowed to visit the protected reefs, far from the tourist traps and recreational areas.

Auteme had managed to secure a pass for herself. At first she'd asked as a student of Coruscant University, but when that got denied she pulled the Jedi card. Soon enough she'd arrived on Pantolomin and a small shuttle flew her and Bernard to where they'd be diving. It was early morning in this area, and Auteme took pictures of the sunrise as the ship finally slowed. The administrator had already gone over all the rules, so as soon as they were suited up Auteme jumped into the water, a little cheer escaping her lips.

The water was warm, as expected for a tropical water world. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the mediocre lighting, but the water itself was incredibly clear. She heard Bernard dive in beside her. Finally her eyes adjusted, and...

Well, it was always different in person.

Auteme was speechless, in awe of the beauty of the enormous reef. The colours were so vibrant. Each small structure built up into the layers of the reef. It stretched as far as the eye could see. Arches, plateaus, mountains of coral, all of it teeming with life as the numerous aquatic species rose with the sun. Unique. Beautiful. All created by non-sentients. Auteme now truly understood that art imitated nature -- everything she'd seen before now could only be described as imitation. For all the advanced technology and high-culture that most were so indulged in, in truth society had invented nothing.

"This is amazing," she finally whispered. The padawan glanced to her companion. As usual, most of the trip he'd been silent, but this was something she thought might be worth getting his opinion on. "What do you think?" Auteme asked. "Should we get closer?"
