Chiss Ascendancy - Dominion of Crustai

Objectives:

1) Locate suitable city areas that can be reestablished/recolonized easily. Clear those areas out if needed. Basically, pick a random underground city & explore/exterminate hostiles.

2) Negotiate with the Houses on Crustai so the civilized areas can be incorporated into the Ascendancy without the need for violence.

3) Fleeters, purge the upper atmosphere of the harmful gasses from the biological weapon that was activated many centuries ago.

The cold snowy, mountainous, boreal forested, and toxic cloud covered world was founded by the Chiss Ascendancy right before 27 BBY. By 27 BBY, the planet was home to scout teams & small colonies. This all changed once the Gulag plague hit - quickly ending the expansion of the Ascendancy on the planet.

Regrettably, as the plague ravaged the planet, society broke down. A bioweapon that had been housed & researched on the planet was accidentally triggered during the commotion. The end result? A subspecies of Chiss that evolved in the coldness with a particularly strange phenotype.

While various species on the planet have been affected differently, most of the "Ghiss" subspecies have devolved into fairly unpleasant creatures that no longer retain much sentience. Really, they have axes, bows & arrows, but really have no other technology despite essentially controlling many of the underground and mountain side cities. They often fight in packs, although these various packs usually will attack each other on sight.

There are a few civilized Houses that are either underground or built into the mountainsides (and both) of Crustai. While technology has fallen back dramatically, they still contain certain aspects of technology (such as blasters that have been maintained, small electric generators & power plants that allow electricity/some lightning underground, etc.) House Crogui currently has the most influence, although there is still dozens of Houses spread over the planet. Note that there is no instant communication systems left on the planet. As such, a convoy of first contact specialists, negotiators and others have landed right outside the entrance to the largest, at least as far as scanners tell, city in hopes to negotiate.

Regrettably, there isn’t much known about the remaining populations on the planet, their ability to speak Basic or Cheunh, or their technology levels. Some educated hypotheses exist, of course, but will they be right? Time will tell.

With the Ascendancy returning to the system, the goal is to revamp the cities so they are habitable once more/purge the ‘Lost’, negotiate with the remaining ‘civilized’ Houses on the planet to ensure a formal integration process without violence, and lastly clean the upper atmosphere from the toxic clouds that have rendered the world.

Objective I

A lone Carttusah-class ship descended upon a small, snow-covered clearing on Crustai's surface. The jets blew snow about wildly as the ship landed onto the ground. As the engines died down, the entrance ramp opened up and dug into the snow beneath the ship. Several chiss, half of them armed with rifles, descended the ramp and onto the snow. Upon looking at them, one would not be able to tell that they were Chiss due to their faces being fully covered by masks protecting them from the frosty breeze. One of the chiss pulled a small box from their pocket and firmly pressed a button on the box's face. An opening appeared on the Carttusah-class appeared and, from it, a Voncsah droid came flying out into the air and began flying about the immediate area.

"We'll get a sizeable amount of data regarding the area in about 10 minutes, Director." one of the chiss stated.

"Good. While the droid searches from the air, fan out and see what you can find. Our objective is not far from this location." Marina, the Director of the Ministry of Public Affairs, stated.

At that moment, the group began walking in different directions, searching for their objective. The immediate area was surrounded by sparse trees and many hills of snow. Mountains were off in the distance along with other chiss ships landing on the planet.

Objective 2

The reports came in fast. Out of breath soldiers gasped for their breath, hands on knees. Loud, fast, things were moving through the air. Blasting down onto the ground, with people trotting out. Most had guns, like theirs. Blasters, firing. Some of the soldiers reported they were entering the cities - whether they were headed to the various Houses or not, it was not clear. All that Guinevere knew was that they had to react, quickly.

But, Gwen had studied the archives. And the vessels being reported looked eerily like those that had laid dormant in the cities all these years, mostly rusted and broken down by now. Had the originals finally returned? What did this mean for the Houses of Crustai? What did it mean for her people? Would they be hostile or friendly? Would they careless conquerors or peaceful overlords? There was no doubt in Guinevere's mind that these... Invaders, for a lack of a better word, would be able to end their way of life. In one form or another.

Needless to say, that didn't mean much. With almost 100 soldiers in tow, Guinevere was assigned to figure out how to speak with these intruders - and negotiate the safety of the people of Crustai. Messages were sent by courier to the various Houses, even hostile ones, to bring notice to the unfolding situation. The walls, entrances, and exits of the cities were being reinforced with soldiers. Luckily, the lost had been quiet for a few weeks.

The sounds, though. From the things in the sky, it might rattle them. They had to be prepared to fight off alien invaders and the lost. It was going to a storm. Only time would tell what kind of storm.

Guinevere stood at the front of the 100 man soldier group, about a mile from where the closest convoy had landed. The group had a mixture of people who wielded bows & arrows, crossbows, and blasters. Several at the front held swords or axes. Gwen wore a white crown, a laced dress and stood near the front, but far enough back that she was safe. Truly, she was just glad it was summer and a warm day. It was rare to be able to dress to impress like this. The clouds hung overhead as the soldiers stopped.

"We will not attack until attacked first," she commanded to the group. But now. They waited and aimed - prepared for whatever may exit the metal box that had landed mere minutes prior.

Thorne stood on the bridge of his Chiss Star Destroyer, observing the holopanels before him. There had been a weapon, of a biological nature, released into the atmosphere of the planet sometime ago, which had resulted in trouble for all below. It had fallen to the CEDF to find a way to neutralize some - or all - of the harmful effects of the weapon, by cleansing the pockets of spoiled cloud from the skies above Crustai. So far the Chiss technicians had been setting up preliminary vessels that had been created for the task, but the effectiveness remained unknown until such time as they were used.

"Update on the cloudscrapers?" Thorne asked, as he turned to one of his communications officers. "How long until they are ready to launch?"

There was a moment as the tech worked at the holopads, before speaking lowly into the communicator on her ear. She turned, looking up to the Admiral, answering in a crisp professional tone.

"They estimate twenty minutes, Admiral," She said simply. "Initial readings of all vessels are good, the systems check out, all that remains is to see the effects once active."

Thorne nodded, as he turned back to the viewports that were the safety buffer between him and space. The planet looked sickly, certainly, so hopefully the Ascendancy could do something about it...

Sorena stood from her seat at the navigational controls. She had to take a moment to steady her nerves or she might fall over. A few slow deep breaths and an internal “Okay Sorena, you can do this. It’s not that big of a deal, we’ve done this plenty of times.” Of course while the inner monologue took place her hands and head bobbed as if she was talking to another being. Which only made things more odd as she realized how silly she must look. Quickly Sorena went rigid and looked around the command bridge of the ship. She wasn’t taking stock of faces or how many were around. Just making sure nobody saw her just now.

The young Chiss decided it might be a good time to check her uniform. So with the fervor of a hungry Nexu she checked. Sorena took great care in making sure her jacket was smooth, boots properly cleaned and of course her hair. She made sure her hair was in a tight tail. It was paramount that not a single strand be out of place. Or that was what she told herself. Sorena checked and then checked again only stopping when she heard the clearing of a throat. “What are you doing Sorena?”

She turned slowly grimacing slightly. Behind her stood an officer. Even worse she wasn’t sure of his name, or his rank for that matter. The scowl on his face didn’t help anything either. “Umm sorry sir, we’re here....” She paused wincing again. “Well of course you know we’re here, cause you can see it... haha..” She cast her eyes about looking for any sort of exit from the conversation. There wasn’t one. “Anyways we’re here,” her hands started to twist the bottom of her shirt “and well I wasn’t sure what I’m supposed to be doing....” Another grimace, and an eternity of horrified possibilities. It definitely wasn’t turning out to be her day.

As the situation stood. It wasn’t that she hadn’t had orders to follow. She had just merely fulfilled them already. Get the shit to Crustai in one piece. Mission accomplished as far as Sorena saw it. For once though she thought it might be good to make a suggestion. “Umm sir, if I may.” Sorena said. “I would like to try my hand at being diplomatic with the houses here on Crustai.” She began to fidget awkwardly. “I know that’s not generally what my function is but I’ve been studying and well...” Her red eyes flashed with excitement. “I thought it might be good for me to get some first hand experience in a diplomatic setting, especially this one.” Sorena gestured to the world just outside the view port. “With my precognition I feel I would be safer as a diplomat than a someone... not like.... me... sir.” Her last words were slow and stressed with anxiety. This was far out of her comfort zone after all.

The officer tilted his head slightly. A clear indication he was at least considering her suggestion. “While I understand your point, as well as think it is a good idea.” He said. Sorena’s eyes flared with a small amount of triumph before her hopes were dashed by his next words. “However, it is not up to me whether or not you go planet side. That is a decision for others to make.” He gestured to the console “I will speak on your behalf, but till then please stay open.” The Officer stressed the last word. “You never know what situation may arise here.”
Sorena nodded once and went back to her fidgeting. “Yes sir.” She said a little deflated. “Hopefully someone in charge is open to my idea.” She thought as he walked away.

"-they are our people, no matter how different they might look. We should have known sooner that they were there and were trapped in this technological dark age. You will not send a military force to intimidate them. I will go myself, with a small armed force for protection, and that is final." It was the tail end of the conversation as Prusde'zoti'lore walked near where the Skywalker of her ship's quarters. She had wanted to speak with the young woman, mostly because the Aristocra hadn't ever seen a Skywalker in action. Commandos were too high risk to ever have their own on board after all.

And she caught the tail end of the conversation between the officer and Sorena. A smile formed as she leaned on the wall outside the door, casually dismissing her entourage of officials trying to convince her not to go on world. As soon as the officer stepped out the Aristocra stood tall, dressed in a golden dress to match the Lore House colors. "Officer Nart'otoki'crerrug. You will not have to go far to speak on her behalf. Nor will you have to speak. She will come with me on world to meet our lost brethren. You are dismissed." The man fumbled a salute, clearly surprised by the appearance of an Aristocra. So he nodded quickly and rushed off.

Dezoti then peaked her head into the doorway, smiling warmly to Sorena. "So, you want to help with the diplomacy?"

Guinevere was nervous. And dare she say, unprepared. Why hadn't they explored the possibility of some form of alien life coming back? It wasn't like they were completely oblivious to the obvious. The cities, the archives, the inability to explain various things - like the strange vessels that stood in various compartments across the city. Eventually, they'd be back. And here they were.

In things from the sky. Off planet. And here they were, with some leftover relics and a bunch of bow and arrows. And how long would it take the other Houses to mobilize if they were hostile? Gwen breathed in sharply. How could she get them out of this? Too many lives were hinging on her.

Despite her nerves, there was no look or sound from her facial or body posture that showed such. Like a true Chiss, she showed almost zero emotion as she walked forward to the front of the brigade. "Reports of any life from the... Vessel?" All she could really think of to call it besides a big metal boat.

The officer who stood beside her shook his head. "No contact. Not a good sign," he muttered.

Location: En route to Celwis (within Crustai Hex)
Objective: X - Personal Mission
4QvU0lq.png

With last minute orders given to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer aboard the CNS Vun'ruti bound for Crustai with Admiral Mitth'orn'eruod's 2nd Fleet, Brask'ari'sabosen walked up the boarding ramp of the Commander's glider and settled into the pilot's chair in the small cockpit. The pre-flight had already been done for her by a hangar tech so all she had to do was launch the hyperdrive-equipped shuttle from the medical frigate's hangar, then make the jump to lightspeed.

The Chief Medical Officer was deviating from the current mission to go on a personal one to Celwis. So as the fleet contingent moved out from the CEDF base at Cormit and made the jump to Crustai using the Phalanx Route, the doctor would continue along the Vaagari Corridor deeper into Chiss space that once was ravaged by its namesake; a natural enemy of the Chiss over the millennia in the Unknown Regions.

The Sabosen wasn't an ace pilot, but skilled enough to fly a ship of this caliber from point A to point B and back without too much difficulty. Any way, the hyperlane was pretty straight forward, slow, but not too many space anomalies to worry about. And, there had been no raiding activity by the Vaagari noted by recent patrols so a trip by herself wouldn't be too dangerous.

The reason for this personal mission was to pick up something from a local on Celwis that was believed to have belonged to her late mother. It looked important the Chiss thought so they wanted to make sure it got to the elder Sabosen's daughter. Brask'ari'sabosen wondered if it might be another piece to the puzzle of the 'miracle drug' that Brask'eri'sabosen had been working on before she was killed in a raid by Vaagari pirates...

A chill ran down Ari's spine at that terrifying thought with a heavy pang of loss in her chest just as the nav computer zero'd and alerted her the hyperdrive was ready to engage. She took a deep breath, then let it out slowly in an effort to calm her nerves.

"Well, here goes nothing... " and with that said, the hyperspace lever was pulled down. The Chiss glider then shimmied slightly as the stars elongated and space became a whirl of white.

Sorena jumped at the newcomers voice. Her eyes also went a little wide as she took in the beautiful raiment the individual was wearing. Even more surprise careening into shock as she realized it was the Aristocra. “I.... um... that is to say.... well, I.... Um.” Sorena flushed visibly as she began to stammer wildly. Her mind raced with embarrassment at the situation. Of course it was exactly as she always was when surprised. Her brain moving faster than her mouth could keep up with making her sound in a way, odd. “Sorry, one moment.” She said to the Aristocra.

In times like this her mother had worked with her on some tools. Her master in martial arts had as well. Certain breathing techniques that helped to calm the mind and get her centered. It did take a moment for her mind to slow back down, but conversation was usually easier afterwards. It was something she wished she could keep instinctively on hand like her mother hoped. However Sorena had practiced and practiced and still couldn’t keep her mind centered at all times. No matter what she did it still zipped around at the speed of light. Moving from one problem to the next without pause. Occasionally she worries her brain would explode from too much information.

After that small moment she had herself calmed and centered. Just a few repetitions of deeb slow breaths. Then she was good to speak normally. “Aristocra.” She said bowing her head slightly. Sorena was unsure of the protocol when dealing with someone of the Aristocra’s status, but bowing seemed smart. “I’m sorry, when I’m caught off guard like that my brain gets away from me a little.” She said in explanation as she straightened again. “But yes I would love the opportunity to negotiate with those on the surface of the world. I think I could be of use there.” Sorena pointed to her head as she explained further. “My family has always had precognition as far as we can remember that is, and we’ve gotten good at teaching our women how to use the ability.” Her band came back down. “While I know I’ve never been on this type of mission..... that is to say. I’ve never been on another world aside from Copero.... Anyways, I think my ability to see the immediate future would be useful just... uh.. in case of... attack?” She said the last word as a question. Which caused her to wince internally and berate herself for it. “Again sorry, this is all new to me.”

Objective 2 - Diplomacy
[member="Amals'Oren'Anuulic"] | [member="Guinevere"] | [member="Dezoti"]

Diplomacy, it was just the sort of tedious - quasi political nonsense that Dezoti hated about her new role, so it surprised her not one bit when the Aristocra had gone over her head to arrange for Commodore Vhirr’bel’laminis to accompany her as a military adviser on this mission. Granted, Dezoti needed all the help she could get lately; getting her to change out of the military fatigues she had worn and into the beautiful golden dress had been challenge enough.

The Commodore was tall and slender, dressed in an immaculately crisp white uniform decorated with various campaign markings, her dark hair back and then expertly tamed in a tight bun, she had caught up with Dezoti just in time to witness the Aristocra dismiss Bella’s subordinate, Officer Nart'otoki'crerrug. As he passed, the man saluted Bella but the Commodore gestured the officer closer and offered a short, quiet exchange of words before dismissing him once again and returning her attentions to Dezoti and the Skywalker.

The girl was of the Ozyly-esehembo, a mixed blessing amongst the Chiss, who distrusted the force almost as much as they did the outsiders. Bella respected the Skywalkers in that they served the Ascendancy faithfully and well, and she considered it a small blessing that soon enough the girls powers would fade away, perhaps leaving her free to pursue a healthier path. She didn’t know the individual, but the officer had at least furnished her with a name.

Whatever her future may hold, Dezoti had decided to take the young woman with them already and for Bella to argue that fact would be incorrect in the navigators presence. She consoled herself with the fact that if fighting broke out and the girl was shot, Bella was under no obligation to tell her she had told her so.

“Aristocra, honoured Ozyly-esehembo Amals'Oren'Anuulic,” she greeted them both as she interrupted, a warm and apparently genuine smile to both as she continued, “I’m sure your presence will be of great help to the Aristocra - let us hope this does not come to blows here.”

“Aristocra, the landing is complete, the command deck reports a gathering of armed individuals have taken positions around the ship, no signs of aggression so far - but there are reports of conflicts with native inhabitant in other sectors around the planet. I’ve ordered Lieutenant Nart’otoki’crerrug to assemble a force of marines on full standby should we require them.”

Zoti gave the young Chiss a patient smile. She was far easier to speak to then some of the other Skywalkers who's minds were overtaken by the various futures they could see. It was truly amazing to the Aristocra, who had no concept on the Force and how it worked, how they could so accurately guide a ship through hyperspace. Still, the young woman before her was nearing the end of her time as an Ozyly-esehembo, and if diplomacy was were she wanted to go next, what better way to start then here?

"Very good, Commodore Vhirr'bel'laminis. Do remind our troops they are not to engage, though if violence is forced I would prefer it if nonlethal could be used. These are still our people, and the differences in our technology would have us easily wipe them out." Her gaze flicked to Bella. All business, at least for the moment. As reluctant as the Aristocra had been to wear the dress, her companion had been rather persuasive. Much to her delight of course.

Her gaze returned back to the Skywalker. "Gather what you need. We'll be heading on world soon enough. There shouldn't be any combat, especially as their leader asked us to meet with them, but I would appreciate having some.. Insight on what might happen." As soon as the Skywalker was ready Dezoti would take the lead, heading right to the transport to head to the surface. They shouldn't keep their hostess waiting.

Guinevere watched the officer, Crogui'ne'ehross, report back that there was no contact with the vessel. What could be hiding about in it? "Prepare for the worst," she replied to which the man made a signal. The group of soldiers prepared their weapons. "But do not attack unless on my command," she replied after a moment.

No, they wouldn't risk an attack. Too dangerous, especially if they had ships. Gods knew they could easily wipe them out if it had some mega blaster or something. Gwen wasn't sure the best course of action. And the lack of communication from the vessel was even more worrying. How could they fend off an alien invasion? They could barely repel the lost in the depths of their ruined cities.

"If I may, perhaps they are discussing a strategy as well? Perhaps a peaceful one? Surely they could have killed us by now..." Crogui'never'ehross gave a small nod as she thought about the suggestion. "Perhaps," she replied flatly. She had never had to guess, ponder, or try to figure out a situation as tricky as this.

She wasn't even quite sure how to force contact - let alone fight them. But maybe her colleague was right. They had to continue to wait... And wait some more, for something to happen.

Sorena stepped right to it. She wanted to seem eager to learn especially when it came to the Aristocra. “Yes ma’am, umm.” Her hands flew to her hair again making sure things were in place. “I’m more or less ready to go.” A small snort came out of her as she laughed softly. “I mean it’s not like I have a whole lot of belongings on the ship.... well.. that is to say.” She grimaced again. “Sorry, never mind. You probably don’t care.” Which for Sorena was okay right now. She was getting to be diplomatic for once in her life.

This Sorena knew was the opportunity of a lifetime. Getting to be on the ground and meet new beings on a new world. She could barely contain her excitement. Which if not for the great self control she was exercising. She would be in a dead sprint to the shuttle headed to the planets surface. Luckily at least this once she was able to keep it together as she walked with the Aristocra and the commodore. “You know I’ve never met so many new people before... well that’s not true I mean we come from a big world...” she laughed at herself again. “I mean of course we do and I’ve met plenty of people. What I mean is.” A short pause to take a deep breath. “This will mark me meeting the most people I’ve ever met at one time.” She looked at both the women walking with her. “Oh! Can you imagine what I might see. I don’t mean how we all See you know, I mean.” A slender blue hand came up to point to her head. “Did you know every woman in my family can do what I do. We aren’t sure why either. We have the stories we tell but really they seem more like a myth than reality.” This was how Sorena was. Talkative at almost every moment filling all available quiet with as much conversation as she could. She hoped she didn’t get on anyone’s nerves.

A small number of cloudscrapers flew through the dense pockets of gas in the low atmosphere, their experimental scoops and filtering systems taking in the gases in the area. The systems within targeted the gas, removing it on a molecular level, from the particles of the oxygen environment. It had been quite an achievement, especially coming up with the technology on such a short notice. As it was, this would likely serve as the testing phase, to determine if a larger scale operation would be suitable to complete the task. After all, cleaning an entire atmosphere couldn't possibly be done in a single day, it would more than likely take months.

"The filtering process is working well, Admiral," Said a communications officer, relaying the reports from the scientist division on board. "Positive changes occurring to the targeted zones, it seems the filtering method has a good chance of doing the task."

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Thorne said with a nod. "Have the cloudscrapers head toward a thicker gaseous pocket. I want to see if the current power levels can handle more concentrated filtering."

"Yes sir."

Thorne stood silent, waiting on more comprehensive reports, but given the effectiveness of initial statements so far it seemed the cloudscrapers might be a valid source for removing the bulk of the problems in atmosphere...

The jump to light speed was uneventful as it should be. The journey to Celwis would take about six hours. With all systems checking out with green across the board, Brask'ari'sabsosen decided to make good use of the travel time.

The Chief Medical Officer had brought along work to do of course. It seemed as of late there was an never ending stack of reports to read and/or make. There really hadn't been much time to do anything else. She missed being at the bedside caring directly on patients. Though the research was interesting and kept the doctor wanting to push through to the next step of the process

It was this need to connect all the dots that fostered the determination of the young Sabosen to pick up where her mother had left off. Karisa had made strives in taking what information she had on the possible make up of this 'miracle drug', but there always seemed to be something missing, some element or tweak that wasn't in Keris' notes. This was why it was so important to see what the local on Celwis had found. She was cautiously optimistic it would be a piece or the piece to the puzzle.

Stepping from the cockpit, Karisa entered the small lounge where there was a mini galley. The glider didn't have a lot of amenities or room for that matter, but it was enough to get her by on this journey by herself. The CMO wasn't going to Celwis empty handed though... The cargo bay was loaded with crates of medical supplies for the small hospital that served the colonial Chiss world. If nothing else, Karisa would see to it they were well supplied. What she personally got out of this trip, well would be icing on the cake as they say.

A strong cup of caf was made, then Karisa sat down at the lounge table and took out a data pad and a stack of data cards from her briefcase. She also pulled out a music pod and clicked on the classical playlist that was downloaded. It was one that Mitth'orn'eruod had shared with her upon the admiral's last visit to Sposia. That thought brought a small smile to her face. Okay, rather a warm one.

With a sip of the caffeinated hot drink on board, the doctor got to work.

It might have surprised those who knew Bella as a distant, aloof, icy noble to discover that she did not dislike the company of children and young adults as a rule. In point of fact the scion of House Vhirr had harboured maternal hopes for several years; To her own surprise, she had discovered a tolerance for the company of energetic youths.

Despite this, there was something immediately exhausting about the sheer pace and irregular tangents of the Sky Walker’s conversation that began to wear on the Commodores practised patience.

Bella nodded her affirmation to Zoti tolerantly, expression neutral save a single raised brow. Silently, Bella chaffed at the idea that CEDF marines of her fleet might need to be reminded not to simply slaughter the good people of Crustai by accident.

The Ozyly-esehembo was spurting out enthusiastic nuggets of information, speculation and observation once again; Charming in its own way, but a trait that Bella would have excised from any officer under her direct command, Flame help the girl if she chose to remain within the military after her usefulness as a navigator had ceased.

Sorena was indeed getting on Bella’s nerves, though she couldn’t begrudge the girl her excitement.

“I for one, had no idea of the significance of your family, you will need to tell me more once we’ve concluded our business on Crustai..”, it was practically an act of kindness on Vhirr’bel’laminis’ part to engage the youth, “Do you think, Amals'Oren'Anuulic, that perhaps you and I should allow Aristocra Prusde’zoti’lore to lead the negotiations at first. I hope we will both learn much from her example.”

The Commodore gestured onward, shepherding their party into the lander, and signalling to begin the transfer to the meeting place.
