SPECIAL FEATURES

[*]Navigation:

[*]Defenses:

[*]
Sensors:

Strengths:

  • Great ability to detect a variety of targets in a wide array of situations, including but not limited to, mines
  • Ability to perform electronic intelligence (ELINT) even in Otherspace
  • Can fly long-distance flights in non-straight trajectories in hyperspace or Otherspace
  • High maneuverability
  • High resistance to slicing attempts
Weaknesses:
  • Once the armor takes a hit at one place, another hit at that same place will likely penetrate the hull
  • Limited ammunition: once the missile launcher magazines are out of ammunition, it can no longer sweep mines (it causes mines to detonate by firing missiles filled with flechette canisters at a minefield) and its combat performance degrades significantly
  • No long-range offensive capability
  • Slow
  • Otherspace operation is very dangerous
  • Exposed engines
Description: The Chikuma-class minesweeper corvette is equipped with a myriad of systems designed to detect space mines, such as demolition sensors, which are capable of detecting explosives as well as detonation mechanisms, and a doppraymagno scanner that includes a Doppler sensor array, working in concert with mass detector and other items, such as a crystal gravfield trap, to detect cloaked mines and other hazards of that nature. With the photoamplifier, and the long-range electrophotoreceptor, it can optically resolve items to a greater level of resolution (up to the limits of diffraction). Its sensor suite also enables it to detect hyperspace jumps and reversions thanks to its soliton antenna and radiation sensors, which were used to detect cronau radiation. With the data from the communication monitor being compared to the com-scan, one can also sort out the transmissions data to determine what was important or not, with the target identification network giving the crews inside a precise picture of the battlefield coupled with data from the motion sensor and the thermal detector. Given the collision avoidance system, if any of the sensors detect mines, its crew can attempt to fly out of the way or to shoot down the mine altogether, and possibly find its way back to a location marked with transpond markers, with the universal transceiver package being the standard sensor suite, hooked up to the Castameer tactical display, allowing the crew to display hundreds and maybe thousands of targets at once, with the added processing power of the ship-wide neural net and its redundancies giving some breathing room to the ELINT crew. Finally, the CHX 5.0 acoustic theater sounding alerts to the whole crew (provided the crew isn't deaf).

Also it is equipped with a variety of stealth systems designed so that it would not accidentally set off space mines while in flight, given the variety of mechanisms for detonating space mines, such as thrust trace dampers, thermal dissipators, reflec coating and sensor bafflers/masks (which, together, make the ship go unseen by a variety of space mines by virtue of masking most of their detectable signatures, and likewise go unseen by other ships) and a HIMS so that it would not set off empion or interdictor mines. The resulting ship is akin to a stealth ELINT (electronic intelligence) corvette for this reason, due to the need for a wide variety of sensor systems in order for the ship to detect mines. However, a ship designed mostly to detect mines must sacrifice speed to do its job adequately, since high speeds make it easier for the ship to set off mines. In addition, due to the greater-than-normal possibility that the ship may get itself stranded in Otherspace, thanks to its dangerous role in minesweeping, the Otherpilot navicomputer helps the crews of such ships get their way back to realspace at their own risk. In addition, the Nadion Otherdrive allows it to operate ELINT in Otherspace combat even without hitting mines, but it does so at the risk of reverting to hyperspace while hitting mass shadows and all the other risks associated with Otherspace travel.

Once mines are detected, the crews onboard would fire missiles loaded with flechette canisters in the general direction of the mines, in hopes of prematurely setting them off before they hit the ship, thanks to mines being unshielded (most shields would give their position away and hence defeat their purpose). However, due to the inertia in space, the missile sometimes detonates a good distance away, with the flechettes continuing their flight in the direction they took at detonation until they hit something. Also, the regenerative cap drains allow the ship to allow ion attacks to recharge the ship's own shields, making it last longer against enemies that actively use ion cannons or equivalent. In addition, the Chikuma is equipped with explosive-reactive armor, which allows it to reduce the impact of mass driver and HVC attacks by deforming the projectiles upon impact, on the outer tile of which reflec coating is applied. For this reason, if an enemy manages to land a hit to the hull, the armor tile will explode, but also create a chink in the armor that will reduce the effectiveness of the reflec coating, and invite attacks directed at that particular spot, which will likely penetrate the hull.

Please reflect all linked items in the strengths and weaknesses and described thoroughly in the description, if their abilities are actively helpful to the vessel, that is the rules.

[member="Travis Caalgen"] I believe I addressed all the items listed in the special features: if there are still items that are not addressed in the S&Ws or the description, please let me know.

This has loads of special features and I'm struggling to put together a complete picture here.

Help me - and other readers - out by grouping up your special features by type please?

So group them up by Sensors, Stealth features, and other sensible categories to help us out?

Far too much going on.

Drop all the stealth equipment and HIMS please.

Alternatively you can scale back the sensor suite and otherwise drives.
