It's allowed, and treated as a real, okay thing, as long as you don't go overboard with it. Several canon species have pretty good-to-insane levels of regeneration. Anzati, Gendai, and Icarii are a few examples. Though the last one usually gets a few raised eyebrows, seeing as A: they went extinct, and B: they can survive pretty much anything. Of course, a Gendai once (apparently) survived being shot into the sun...
