First Reply Challenges of the Heart

Stay within sight? Does he expect that I would just wander off in the jungle? How laughable. I am no foreigner to New Cov. I know of what dangers lurk here. I know of what lives here. Which is why I do very little movement at all and keep my voice quiet.

I give Mister Bloodscrawl a small nod and then return my focus to the foliage. It is an odd turn for me to be the one keeping guard now, yet I feel obligated to do so. I can only hope that the rendevous will not take very long.

When next he speaks, I give him a double-take; for the information that he gives me is not what I was expecting to hear. Especially coming from such a young man. "Getting rid of? However do you propose to do that?" I keep my voice quiet as I speak, yet I am sure that the surprise is written on my face. Does he propose murder? Or something else? The young man certainly does not look like a killer. And neither am I. I have never hurt anyone.

"I wouldn't kill him or anything like that," Thel replied quickly, seeing the uncertainty in Liin's expression. "But I think I could blackmail him. Er, I mean..." He faltered, realizing he probably shouldn't have phrased it so bluntly. His aunts had been telling him he was too honest.

"Lord Omri tried to use me to ruin your family's reputation. Whether it was paranoia or an attempt at a smear campaign, he asked me to find some dirt on you. After everything that's happened tonight, I still haven't found anything. You may be a little bit crazy, but you're not dirty or corrupt. If Omri is just trying to make you look bad, you can do the same to him by revealing that he enlisted the help of a child to try and fabricate a scandal."

I listen to him quietly with furrowed brows. Out of everything that he says, the most ridiculous one is the point where he says that I am a little bit crazy. It is the first time that anyone has ever described me in such a way. But given what has happened down there, he could be right. Yet it is a one time thing, I am sure. I do not plan to be so reckless ever again; scientific curiosity be damned!

However everything else that he described is entirely believable. Lord Omri has tried to take down my family multiple times in the past. I do believe that it is his ultimate goal in life. I find that to be very sad indeed, for he should really be focusing on New Cov and the betterment of the Covie.

Hiring a young man; an outsider no less, to do his dirty wirk is new for him. Or at the very least this is the first time that I had heard about it. There could be many things that Lord Omri has done that I am not aware of.

"Thank you for coming clean. Being dirty or corrupt is the last thing on my mind. And being involved in a scandal is included in that list as well." I am not even involved with anyone, I have never had a lover or a suitor, so that nothing like that can tarnish my reputation either. Not that that would be anyone's business but my own; but I had grown up in a society where I learned that my life is not a private one. And to have such a life involved a certain sacrifice. This is mine. "I will take some time to think about your offer, Mister Bloodscrawl. In a delicate situation such as this, there is no reason to act rashly. Once a decision is made, I will notify you." Now his questioning of me on an earlier occasion makes sense. Whereas before I had figured that it was something to do with holonews; it had instead turned out to be something entirely different.

My focus returns to the jungle around us, as I thought that I have caught a glimpse of something moving within the foliage. My muscles tense up. I can only hope that it is Mister Bloodscrawl's ship.
