Personality and Beliefs:
Charles is a quiet professional. He is efficient, composed and completes his duties with focus and precision. Despite this there is there are times where he shows warmth and witty humor. Not the standard Imperial Officer he doesn't use fear and is distant from the crew but rather builds bonds with them. He socializes freely with his crew no matter what rank they are, a habit that confused his fellow officers but build something without a price, loyalty and respect.
Although Charles carries out his duties as an Imperial Officer faithfully. He has always been a quiet dissident of some of the Empire’s more brutal and inefficient methods. He believes that the Tarkin Doctrine of the Galactic Empire was strategically short sighted and wasteful. Instead Charles believes in the strategies of Grand Admiral Thrawn which were more pragmatic and strategically sound. He also believes trying to work with the local population first rather than using force and intimidation. Charles rarely voiced his disagreements with superior officers, but will gladly twist the orders in a way that works for him.
Charles, like most Imperials, believes in human superiority. However, he has never shown contempt or open hostility to non-humans. Instead his naivety and tendency to judge people based on character over species has forced him to confront and question this belief over time.
Charles handles setbacks and failures with composure and self criticism. He tends to be harsh on himself in private and always tries to see what could have been done better.
Strengths:
- Tactical: Charles can read the battlefield situation quickly and act decisively. Comes up with strategies on how to fight an enemy ahead of time.
- Courageous: Charles gained some fame for his fearlessness in action. Once he led his ship (the Stryker) in a heroic charge against a Mon Calamari Cruiser to save a nearby damaged frigate from certain destruction. Later managing to limp his damaged ship away mostly intact.
- Respected: Charles is well liked and respected by his subordinate who he treats fairly and well. He is well known for taking advise from his subordinates seriously unlike most other Imperial Officers.
- Recklessness: Charles’s courage and determination can become liabilities in the heat of battle. He is willing to put everything on the line to complete important missions, pushing himself, his crew and ship beyond their limits.
- Naive: Charles is a good person and his default belief is others are too. This can be exploited in the morally grey world of the Empire, a dangerous weakness that his subordinates have to work with.
History:
Early Life:
Charles was born on the Core World of Corulag which had deep Imperial ties and a strong culture of civil service. His father was a mid-level government administrator while his mother stayed at home providing a modest but comfortable childhood. Charles was an average but ambitious child who spend most of his free time studying military history and strategy, particularly the doctrine of Grand Admiral Thrawn. He was also inspired by his grandfather who served with distinction as an Imperial Army Officer, who told him stories of past battles and fueled his desire to serve even more. His grandfather used his remaining connections to get Charles into the Imperial Academy before he died.
Academy Years:
The Corulag Sector Naval Academy was some of Charles's worst and happiest memories. The first year was a nightmare, brutal academic workload, endless physical training and pure chaos of trying to figure everything out. It was there his savior appeared, Banks a 3rd year cadet who took him under his wing and became his mentor and the older brother he never had. When things got particularly bad, Banks would take him out for meals and to talk about the Navy, Life and the Academy. Thanks to this Charles eventually found his rhythm by his second year and graduated in the top 1/3 of his class with high marks in tactical theory and military history.
Early Service:
Now an Ensign, Charles was assigned to the IMS Relentless (an Arquitens Class Light Cruiser) which was operating in the Outer Rim with the New Imperial Order. The galaxy was still recovering from the Second Great Hyperspace War which saw the Brotherhood of Maw defeated but in turn had severely weakened the New Imperial Order. Galactic Alliance aligned rebel cells were on the offensive using the chaos to take territory of their own. One of these groups, the Ash Confederacy was a severe thorn in the side of the New Imperial Order and had been harassing supply lines for months. Imperial Forces were ordered to protect the supply lines and destroy Ash forces when the opportunity arose. Charles was presently supposed to meet his mentor again, Banks now a Commander greeted Charles warmly and told him how proud he was of him. Banks, Charles and the Relentless saw multiple small but meaningful successes against Ash forces. Charles found his footing quickly sharpening his tactical instincts with every engagement something that Banks had seen in him for a while but Charles was only now starting to discover.
Life Changing Event:
The Battle of Harrun IV changed everything. New Imperial Order forces were stretched thin fighting on multiple front against remnants of the Brotherhood of Maw and Galactic Alliance forces. The Relentless and other Imperial Forces of Task Force 132 were ordered to attack Ash Confederacy forces massing near the planet. The commander of Task Force 132, Captain Varen Ostell had received reports of strong enemy fortifications but despite objections from his officers including Banks had chosen to ignore the reports and launch the assault anyways. It was a disaster, as soon as the Task Force dropped out of hyperspace they were fired upon. Heavy Ash Confederacy fire tore through the Imperial ships. It wasn't long until the Relentless was being boarded by Ash Confederacy forces. In desperate fighting the crew of the Relentless held of boarding party after boarding party. Charles and Banks fought side by side, fighting even hand to hand against waves of enemy troops and sailors. It was during these actions where Charles got his distinctive facial scar and where he lost Banks. One second Charles turned to notify Banks of enemy troops the next Banks was gone cut down by a blaster bolt to the chest. The Relentless's crew was eventually able to escape having repelled multiple boarding parties but over a 1/3 of her crew was dead. Ostell's after action report merely attributed the near disaster to unexpected strength of enemy forces. Charles read the report and simply asked to transfer which was approved, but Charles would never forget what happened that day. Something had permanently cracked.
Famous Moment:
In one of the final battles before the final collapse of the New Imperial Order, the Battle of Verath, Charles earned his claim to fame. A Galactic Alliance Mon Calamari Cruiser operating in support of the Ash Confederacy had damaged the IMS Steadfast as Imperial frigate and was preparing to finish her off. The closest Imperial reinforcements were 11 minutes out, too long. Charles acted immediately, without orders he ordered his ship the IMS Dauntless (another Arquitens Class Light Cruiser) to charge the Cruiser. Charles used every trick he knew to keep the cruiser's attention long enough for the Steadfast to escape and for help to arrive. The Dauntless limped back home mauled. Soon after Charles was promoted to Captain with his promotion citing the his actions during the battle. Charles was given a new command a newly minted Arquitens class light cruiser he named the Stryker, a name he remembered from a conversion with Banks of what to name ships. He also made one request to transfer any willing survivors from the Dauntless to his new command the Stryker. 60% of them showed up with Charles personally greeting each one.
Recent History:
Charles and the IMS Stryker were on long range patrol deep in the Outer Rim when they lost contact with HQ. After weeks of trying to reestablish communications, they heard that it had collapsed from intercepted communications with only scattered garrisons left. The Stryker and her Captain are now independent have have choices do they try to link up with remaining Imperial Forces? Do they try to start their own Imperial State? Do they surrender to the Galactic Alliance and see if they can work for them?
