- Extreme cutting potential, especially when powered on.
- Cortosis-weave blade attachment has the potential to short out lightsabers that Burnblade comes into contact with.
- Can be used one handed or two handed, much like most lightsabers.
- Theoretically capable of deflecting blaster bolts.
- Burnblade's external power pack can temporarily "overcharge" the weapon, making its destructive potential even higher than a lightsaber.
- Because Burnblade is permanently attached to an external power pack, it is technically impossible to remove the weapon for its user's hands, as they can simply pull the weapon back into position.
- Relatively good reach, especially when compared to a standard sized lightsaber.
- In especially cold environments, Burnblade can provide their user with a temporary heat source.
- In especially dark conditions, Burnblade can provide their user with a temporary light source.
- Because it has a physical presence, Burnblade is easier to use than a lightsaber is.
- Extremely dangerous to user, especially if they are untrained in sword fighting.
- The wired connection on Burnblade's power pack can restrict the weapon's overall movement, and is a prime target in a fight.
- When used with one hand, Burnblade is relatively heavy to wield.
- While Burnblade is technically capable of deflecting blaster bolts, its blade geometry makes doing so far more difficult in practice.
- Burnblade is difficult to store and carry due to its large size.
- Because of the way that Burnblade functions, it is impossible to employ certain techniques with the weapon, such as "half-swording".
- The bright glow of Burnblade makes it impossible to use stealthily.
- Burnblade requires constant maintenance to keep the weapon operational.
- Much like a lightsaber, injuries produced by Burnblade are cauterized instantly, preventing enemies from receiving bleeding damage.
- Can be uncomfortable to wield due to the excessive heat coming from the weapon.
Conservative estimates of Burnblade's age places the weapon at nearly 5,000 years old. First believed to have been constructed during the Great Sith War of 3996 BBY, Burnblade started its existence as a rather large Fire Blade that was modified to fight either Jedi or Sith. Its original manufacturer has been lost to time, as the weapon has been so heavily modified and repaired that it is impossible to tell where it originally came from.
Unlike a lightsaber, which uses a blade of plasma, or a vibroblade, which utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to increase its cutting effectiveness, Burnblade operates on a Fire Blade principle. When activated, a sheath of energy surrounds the metal blade on Burnblade, causing the sword to glow red hot. The extreme heat produced by the weapon allows it to cut through nearly any type of material. This cutting ability is assisted by the Mono-molecular edge of the weapon.
To power the weapon, Burnblade is equipped with an external power pack, usually hip or back mounted. It works similarly to a Protosaber, and comes with many of the advantages and disadvantages of this archaic weapons system. For example, it is possible to "overcharge" the weapon for short periods of time, causing it to glow white and eventually blue. When in its "overcharged" state, Burnblade can produce more damage than even a lightsaber.
Yet the true appeal of Burnblade lies not in its heat producing abilities, but rather its blade construction. Layered on top of the weapon's Neutronium blade is a thin layer of Cortosis-weave. This Cortosis-weave has the unique ability to temporarily "short out" any lightsabers that come into contact with it, while also increasing the heat resistance and the durability of the metal blade itself. Combined with a layer of Insulfoam, Burnblade is capable of withstanding temperatures that would melt almost any other type of material.
Currently, Burnblade is in the possession of the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant, where it has remained for centuries. It has seen considerable wear and tear over the years, with many "ad hoc" repairs and modifications having been added to the weapon. As one might expect, a weapon like Burnblade requires near constant maintenance to keep operational, and is only ever given to the most elite and distinguished soldiers in Imperial Service.
