SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Long-range Life Sign Detection:
    • Detection: The Sur'tra is capable of tracking life signs at extreme ranges, both on a planet and in space. It is sensitive and possesses a high enough sensor resolution out to its maximum range to identify species, sex and rough age.
    • Specific Signature Tracking: If fed a specific life form signature or a set of signatures, the Sur'tra can track these targets in addition or instead of its standard protocols. In addition, the system store signatures it has tracked before in a database and can search for and track them on command.
    • Approximate Targeting: Based on the number of life signs in a given area and their velocity, the Sur'tra can identify whether the target is an individual utilizing stealth systems or a larger stealth vehicle or starship. In the case of the latter, a firing solution is created based on an approximated size of the vessel, based on crew density to the smallest possible limits. While still an approximate, the solution assumes the smallest possible target based on life-sign density, thereby decreasing the chances that the estimated fire matrix is larger than the target itself.
    • False Positive Protection: The system can recognize the difference between the natural life signs of a creature and the all too regular signature of an electronic life sign generator.
    • Stealth Bypassing: The Sur'tra shares the ability of standard lifeform scanners to detect beings hidden by cloaking devices, stealth fields, sound dampeners and other similar technology.
  • Heuristic Processor w/ Gabonna Memory Crystal: The Sur'tra's extremely capable hardware ensures that data processing is done swiftly. Additionally, garbage data and false positives are slowly identified and eliminated the longer the systems runs and 'learns' from operations.
STRENGTHS
  • Nowhere to Hide: The 'Sur'tra''s ability to detect lifeforms at considerable range and its ability to detect false positive signatures leaves few avenues for hostile ships/personnel to avoid detection.
  • Nowhere to Run: Paired with an appropriately powerful targeting suite and long-ranged, accurate weapons, there are few avenues for hostile ships to escape. With the vehicle/infantry/droid portable version, the chances of escape are significantly less.
WEAKNESSES
  • Power: There is no self-contained power supply and power needs to be supplied from whatever the system is being mounted on.
  • Force Abilities: Force abilities that trick droids and other sensor systems are something that the Sur'tra has no inherent defense against.
  • Neutronium: Neutronium tends to block the scanners, preventing them from detecting targets behind even extremely thin layers of Neutronium.
  • EMP/Ion: The sensitive electronics in the Sur'tra are susceptible to damage from EMP/Ion weapons, and even though the system is well-protected against such damage, should that protection be compromised, there's no amount of battlefield repair that could get it up and running. The entire incredibly expensive and not entirely easy to produce system will need to be replaced.
DESCRIPTION
The 'Sur'tra' or Spyglass Long-range Lifeform Scanner was designed after the company's existing force-based lifeform scanner, the Gar Strill, not to replace it but rather to augment it. The Gar Strill had one notable issue; it was affected by the very same weapon systems developed by the company to fight force users. The Spyglass is notable in that it is a purely technological approach, not relying on any manner of esotericism, while matching virtually all the capabilities of the system it is supplementing. The most important benefit of this is that it is entirely unaffected by the company's various means of force suppression, thereby making it just somewhat more useful in an environment that those means are deployed in than the system it was designed to supplement.
From an operator's perspective, in principle the Sur'tra works precisely as the Gar Strill. The scanner picks up life forms out to its maximum range and if wired directly to an output console will output the data directly. The system is designed to work in a sensor/scanner fusion arrangement, however, using the Sur'tra's data to augment sensor, tracking and targeting information to better engage targets or to detect targets that would not ordinarily show up on systems. The Sur'tra works best to hunt other stealth targets when combined with other stealth-hunting systems and it is precisely in this arrangement that the company uses it in. This is however less necessary when hunting for infantry or vehicle based targets, though still recommended.
There are however, a number of flaws with the system, notably in its inability to detect targets through even the thinnest layers of neutronium and its vulnerability to force abilities that can trick droids and other sensor systems. The system also requires power from its mounting platform as it possesses no self-contained power supply of its own. In addition, due to the sensitive electronics in use are susceptible to damage from EMP/Ion weapons, and even though the system is well-protected against such damage, should that protection be compromised, there's no amount of battlefield repair that could get it up and running. The entire incredibly expensive and not entirely easy to produce system will need to be replaced.
