OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Sub an extremely powerful ion weapon for use in a later fighter submission.
  • Canon Link: HR-IO4 Ion Railgun
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Ion Railgun
  • Size: Extremely Large
  • Weight: Very Heavy
  • Ammunition Type: Tibanna Gas
  • Ammunition Capacity: Very Large
  • Effective Range: Battlefield
  • Rate of Fire: Average
  • Stopping Power: Extreme
  • Recoil: High
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Cooling Systems: In order to prevent the large amounts of heat generated by the weapon from melting it, the SIC-01 has an integrated cooling system that will shut the weapon down in the event of it overheating in order to perform a coolant flush and to allow the weapon to cool down. Most mounting platforms can carry enough coolant for five coolant flushes.
STRENGTHS
  • High Damage: Each shot fired from the SIC-01 is capable of doing great damage to shields and electronics on an unshielded ship.
  • Long Range: The SIC-01 is extremely accurate, meaning that it's long range is not just a marketing ploy. The Jai'galaar's targeting systems can put the weapon's inherent accuracy to good use at the hands of a capable pilot.
  • Accurate: The weapon's long range paired with the advanced targeting computers of the Jai'galaar means that the SIC-01 can be effectively used at long ranges, giving any platform mounting this weapon a considerable alpha strike potential.
WEAKNESSES
  • Aim: Given that the weapon cannot be mounted in gimballed mount of any kind on a starfighter platform, and is not mounted that way on the Jai'galaar, the entire fighter needs to be properly aligned with the intended target.
  • Only Damages Shields/Electronics: Ion cannons by definition do not cause any significant hull damage, but rather only damage shields and electronics on the target vessel.
  • Large and Heavy: The size and weight of the weapon and its ammunition played a significant factor in the design decisions of the Jai'galaar Fighter-Bomber it was intended to be mounted on, and is the biggest factor behind the fighter's reduced maneuverability.
  • EMP/Ion Defenses: Considerable EMP/Ion defenses such as capacitor drains, de-ionizers, reinforced duraplast and ionic shields can all affect the effectiveness of this weapon.
DESCRIPTION
When Breshig War Forge Consolidated was developing the Jai'galaar Fighter-Bomber, they had every intention of developing the fighter around its principle weapon system rather than the other way around. Much deliberation, planning, arguing, scrapping of said plans, planning again, more arguing, some threats, a few fights and a broken jaw happened before the design team settled on two weapon systems; the RSM-01 Repeating Super-Heavy Mass-driver and the SIC-01 Super-Heavy Ion Cannon. The purpose of these two weapons was brutally simple; to engage enemy corvette and small frigate sized targets as well as hardpoints on larger capital ships. Of course, both weapons would be very much capable of taking on several of the armored monstrosities that occupy a place on the modern battlefield planetside as well.

The SIC-01 was developed from a capital ship based ion railgun, with the supplementary power cyclers and other components needing to be scaled down so that they'd fit inside the Jai'galaar without taking up room for ordnance. The resultant weapon had a high damage potential, a long range and was accurate. This was because the ion railgun design solved the issue of shots losing coherency and energy over distance without the weapon needing to draw exorbitant amounts of power from the mounting platform. The SIC-01 of course, is designed to be a support weapon for the most part, softening up shields for wingmen using the RSM-01 or softening frigates and smaller warships up for the killing blow. Of course, the SIC-01 can also be used to disable smaller warships to allow them to be boarded, which is also part of Breshig War Forge Consolidated's marketing campaign to system and planetary defence forces.

Of course, with any ion weapon there are a number of issues. For one, EMP/Ion defenses such as but not limited to capacitor drains, de-ionizers, anti-ion meshes, reinforced duraplast and ionic shields can all affect the effectiveness of this weapon. Another reality of ion weapons is that they do not do any real hull damage. There are issues that are specific to the SIC-01 as well, one of them being that the size and weight of the weapon and the supply of Tibanna gas required to fire it reduce the maneuverability of the Jai'galaar fighter-bomber it is mounted on. The other issue is that given it cannot be gimbal mounted and is built into the frame of the fighter, the fighter has to be oriented at the intended target.

That said, the weapon's flaws have not stopped it from being produced for use on the Jai'galaar and its export variant.
