TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Railgun
  • Size: Large
  • Weight: Heavy
  • Ammunition Type: Ordnance
  • Ammunition Capacity: Very Large. Eight Concussion Missiles or six proton torpedoes or four proton rockets or two proton bombs or equivalent equivalently sized ordnance.
  • Effective Range: Battlefield - Ordnance dependant, but long range ordnance can be accelerated to have increased range.
  • Rate of Fire: Average
  • Stopping Power: Average - Dependant on ordnance
  • Recoil: High
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Carousel Ordnance Loader: A carousel ordnance loader allows a variety of ordnance to be stored, and then when a particular missile or bomb is selected by the operator, the loader loads said ordnance into the barrel.
  • Targeting System Integration: The weapon uses the craft's onboard targeting system to measure distance from craft to target to set what sort of velocity the loaded ordnance needs to be accelerated to.
STRENGTHS
  • Versatile: A wide variety of ordnance can be loaded into the weapon, allowing for a truly versatile weapons loadout on whatever platform the weapon system is mounted on.
  • Long Range: The accelerator rails in the barrel can accelerate ordnance to increase their maximum range, allowing traditionally shorter ranged ordnance to be used at longer ranges.
  • Cooling Systems: In order to prevent the large amounts of heat generated by the weapon from melting it, the RSM-01 has an integrated cooling system that will shut the weapon down in the event of it overheating in order to perform a coolant flush and to allow the weapon to cool down. Most mounting platforms can carry enough coolant for five coolant flushes. In addition, the system helps keep the weapon at optimal railgun operating temperatures.
WEAKNESSES
  • Vulnerable to EMP/Ion Damage: If the gun actually sustains enough EMP/Ion damage, it's accelerator rails will be permanently damaged, requiring a complete replacement of the barrel.
  • Loader Malfunction: Should the loader, for whatever reason, malfunction, weapon will be unable to fire except for whatever ordnance was already loaded into the barrel.
  • Cooling System Malfunction: Should the cooling system malfunction or become damaged, the launcher will shut down to prevent a critical operating failure, which could potentially cook off ordnance.
  • Sympathetic Detonation: While mounted internally, should a penetrating shot penetrate the weapon's outer casing and enter the ordnance storage, it could potentially set off ordnance, sympathetically detonating other stored ordnance and quite possibly destroying the craft the weapon system is mounted on.
DESCRIPTION
There are two stories behind the creation of the MMOL-2, the official story and the slightly less official story. The official story is that the R&D team for the Jai'galaar and Kyr'galaar's weapon systems came up with a revolutionary new mass-driver missile launcher that could use multiple types of ordnance. The slightly less official story is that the mass-driver obsessed weapons engineers at Breshig War Forge Consolidated decided that they would take the evening off to have a few drinks after getting nowhere on the design for the new ordnance launcher and after a few drinks (by Mandalorian standards) had a not very serious conversation about firing missiles out of a mass-driver, how it'd been done before, and how it'd make slow and short-ranged ordnance so much more effective.

Thanks in no small part to the netra'gal and tihaar consumed, they became convinced that not only was this a fantastic idea, but it was also a fantastic idea to go back to the office immediately and get working on the design for it, or in the very least lay the basic concepts down. What started this way, actually turned into a fully fleshed out well thought out idea that took plenty of work to get to the state that it currently is in. Once the prototype was approved, only then did stories of how the R&D team in question had actually come up with the design for the weapon. Some di'kut with a loudmouth accidentally let the story slip on a trip to Mandalore, and since then the story has been out. Knowing that it might concern some of their non-Mandalorian customers, and a scant few of their Mandalorian customers, they officially denied the story. Officially, anyway.

Of course, while firing ordnance out of a mass-driver cannon was all well and good, all it really did was increase the range of the ordnance rather than its lethality. There was an increase in armor penetration, but it was so negligible that it was really pointless to consider given that in battlefield conditions such a thing was quite beyond worth considering. Of course, the carousel loader developed for the launcher allowed a variety of ordnance to be loaded into the barrel, which was largely a Flex Tube launcher barrel extended and converted into a railgun. Which might sound ridiculous, however no expense was spared material wise, with a cryoban based cooling system, Dallorian alloy inner barrel liner and a Duravlex reinforced barrel. The frame itself was made from Duranium, and dedicated power cycler and enhanced capacitor systems were installed to allow for better power management.

As with all weapon systems however, there were a few notable flaws. Being a railgun, the weapon was indeed vulnerable to EMP/Ion damage, as a particularly powerful EMP/Ion will permanently damage the accelerator rails, requiring a complete replacement of the barrel. There was also the matter of the loader malfunctioning, such as if the system takes significant damage or power fluctuations, then the weapon would no longer be able to load new ordnance and would be unable to fire. The cooling system, being an entirely necessary component to keep temperatures down, will not allow the weapon to fire should it sustain critical damage. Finally, there's the problem that most ordnance launchers face, and that is of penetrating shots sympathetically detonating ordnance.

Despite the flaws, Breshig War Forge Consolidated has decided to go ahead with using it on their fighter and fighter-bomber project as well as make the weapon available for separate purchase for those interested.
