OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create an advanced maintenance/construction droid for use by Mandalorians and select clients that is capable of defending itself as well as the vessel/installation it serves on.
  • Canon Link: "Hatchling" Maintenance Droid
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: "Hatchling" Maintenance Droid
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Internal Security Scanner Uplink: Gar'gotabor droids are all connected into a ship's internal security scanner, allowing them to be used as mobile scanner platforms, thus increasing the amount of surveillance a ship has.
  • Ion Charge Failsafe: Unauthorized attempts to access the droid's memory will trigger a failsafe ion charge, frying the droid's circuits and deleting the data on it.
STRENGTHS
  • Advanced Self-Repair Capabilities: Maintenance droids face all manner of hazards when working, and given the droid's secondary purpose as a security droid, Breshig War Forge Consolidated thought it prudent the droid be given self-repair capabilities to reduce the amount of maintenance required, allowing the droid's owners to focus on the maintenance of what they bought the droid to maintain in the first place.
  • Repair Database: The Gar'gotabor can be programmed with a repair database, giving it an enhanced understanding of the ships/vehicles/installation(s) it is expected to maintain allowing it to come to a better conclusion about what might be required for a particular repair job.
  • Wide Array of Tools and Sensors: The Gar'gotabor has a wide variety of tools and sensors to tackle the tasks that it might be expected to carry around, meaning that the number of times a specialists might be required to solve a particular problem is far reduced.
  • Resilient: The Gar'gotabor is well protected against a wide variety of threats, whether they're on the battlefield or while it's working.
  • Data Link: Gar'gotabor droids in the same proximity as one share data via a short ranged encrypted comms frequency to enable them to better coordinate with one another on tasks, whether it be assisting in the manufacturing process of a new corvette or hunting down intruders. This datalink can also link to a ship's computer to access diagnostic information.
  • Intelligent: The Gar'gotabor is meant to be far more intelligent than the average maintenance/construction droid, able to understand complex instructions and make educated decisions of its own when it comes to tasks it is assigned rather than requiring constant oversight. Which isn't to say the droid requires no oversight at all.
WEAKNESSES
  • Droid: Despite the measure taken to protect the Gar'gotabor against EMP/Ion damage, a powerful enough weapon will still fry this droid like a protato in a deep-fat fryer.
  • IFF or Death: Anyone not transmitting a friendly IFF signal not already in the droid's registry of friendly targets will immediately come under attack by the droid.
  • Not Designed For Combat: While programmed with combat protocols, it's not a battle droid nor a security droid, and will perform neither task as well as either. Gunfire may be accurate, but there is no concept of tactics here. Gar'gotabors' combat protocols typically entail attacking the intruder with blaster fire and tool limbs after putting an alert out to the rest of the crew until either they or the enemy are dead. Non-lethal isn't really an option either.
  • Elements: While designed to handle the extreme temperatures of the void around starships, closer exposure to extreme heat and extreme cold such as from cryoban or incendiary weapons can severely damage the droids.
  • Acid: Given that acid is something that Breshig War Forge Consolidated considered the droid having to deal with, the Gar'gotabor has no protection against it aside from however long said acid would take to corrode it's reinforced duraplast armor plating.
  • Large: Like the "Hatchling" Maintenance droid that it's meant to supplant, the Gar'gotabor is a large droid, almost three meters long and a meter tall, limiting its use on smaller ships.
  • Intimidating: While hardly a problem on a warship or a military station, the droid's intimidating visage might be a problem elsewhere, given that the Gar'gotabor is ideally deployed in small to large groups.
DESCRIPTION
The Gar'gotabor was designed shortly after Breshig War Forge Consolidated came to be as a company. The company needed a droid to replace their positively ancient complement of updated "Hatchling" maintenance droids that populated their manufacturing facilities, shipyards and even the starships of Strill Securities. Given that many of their "Hatchling" units had been modified to serve as rudimentary security droids as well as "Mynock hunters", an additional design parameter of being able to do the same was given to the design team of the new droid. A short time later, the first few prototypes were given the task of putting re-attaching the wing of a damaged Kyr'galaar Stealth Multi-role Fighter back together, which they did admirably. Present for the demonstration, Shuklaar remarked that they were "effective" but "nasty looking shabuire". With the evaluation a success, and follow-up trials even more so, the Gar'gotabor saw widespread adoption throughout the company.

Of course, the success of the Gar'gotabor is largely due to the fact that unlike many other maintenance droids, it is able to not only intelligently problem solve thanks to it's heuristic processor, but also draw on a vast data store of schematics and repair information because of their memory crystals. Combined with the ability to share data with other droids as well as the wide variety of tools and sensors they possess, in groups, the Gar'gotabor droids were capable of solving just about any repair/engineering problem thrown at them with little to no oversight. Of course, this did mean that a canny slicer or someone with capable technical skills with access to the droid could access its memory and said schematics. To minimize the chances of this happening, engineers installed an ion charge that would trigger if the droid's memory was ever accessed without it being in a maintenance cradle.

The Gar'gotabor droids are also capable of functioning as a security droid, and are designed to be connected into a ship or station's internal security scanner such that they can act as mobile sensor and fast response platforms. They're resilient as well, with a duranium frame, chassis and limbs paired with reinforced duraplast armor plating and an agrinium mesh. Along with a combat de-ionizer, this means that the droid is quite safe against most of the hazards it might encounter while performing its primary task as well as its secondary task. That said, when it comes to the elements, acid or disruptor weapons it possesses no protection at all and will likely be easily destroyed or disabled. Additionally, any targets unlikely to be taken out by its in-built tools or heavy blaster pistols is likely in a good position to disable or destroy the droid, especially given it's rudimentary combat programming.

However given the hazards that maintenance droids face, and to reduce the amount of maintenance required for the droid, it was given advanced self-repair and maintenance protocols. The company boasts that this means less time spent maintaining the droid and more time able to be spent maintaining what the customer bought it to maintain. There has been noted issues where Gar'gotabor droids have taken materials for the purposes of self-repair or maintenance without permission, but such personality quirks are usually no problem given the droid's efficiency in its primary task. This issue, however, combined with the droid's intimidating visage have made sales to suffer somewhat, but customers who purchase the droid are usually extremely satisfied.
