  • Primary Source: Thaissen Crystal, Force Detector, Force-detecting Chip.
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Force Detector: The Gar Strill can detect force sensitive lifeforms and objects at a great distance, and is additionally capable of detecting use of the force at the same distances. It can be tuned to ignore minor uses, and focus on wide-scale use of force powers such as battle meditation. As with the smaller scale force detectors, the Gar Strill's display will indicate their force alignment textually as well as with the same holographic display as the smaller version.
  • Specific Signature Tracking: If the Gar Strill has scanned a target before, it will be able to track their specific signature at great distances. This includes force sensitive lifeforms, objects and non-force users.
  • Detector: The Gar Strill can detect targets even if they're not force sensitive. This feature is usually turned off unless looking for specific individuals or attempting to locate a stealthed vessel/installation via it's crew in a particular area around the ship. This does mean that the crew has to be vaguely aware of where the other ship is if attempting to do so in a crowded area of space.
  • Tracking: The Gar Strill can track targets such that a targeting suite can be used to engage said targets. This is particularly useful when dealing with stealthed ships/vehicles/personnel, but given that the array tracks individuals, in the specific case of stealth ships, unless the ship itself is alchemically enhanced or in some way imbued with the force, the targeting data will not be the most accurate for the purposes of engaging another vessel in combat.
  • Navigation: The Gar Strill array can make use of it's tracking abilities to compute navigational data for targets it is tracking, including through hyperspace (for the starship/station variants). The range is relative to size of the array, but in the case of arrays mounted on platforms corvette and larger, this is out to the distance of the size of the average star system.
  • Retractable: The starship/station version of the array is designed to be retracted when not in use beneath the comparative safety of a ship's hull when not in use so as not to expose the expensive array to unnecessary hazards.
STRENGTHS
  • Nowhere to Hide: The Gar Strill's ability to detect force sensitive lifeforms, objects and use of the force at considerable range leaves few avenues for hostile ships/personnel to avoid detection.
  • Nowhere to Run: Paired with an appropriately powerful targeting suite and long-ranged, accurate weapons, there are few avenues for hostile ships to escape, and for those that do escape, the getaway is unlikely to be clean. With the vehicle/infantry/droid portable version, the chances of escape are significantly less.
  • Tough: The array is built to function in combat conditions, and is therefore resistant to a wide variety of damage that it might face on the battlefield.
WEAKNESSES
  • Blocked: Creatures, substances and phenomenon that can't be detected via the force, or disrupt detection via the force, will prevent the Gar Strill array from detecting them. This includes but is not limited to, Ysalamiri, Void Stone, Yorik Coral and force dead life forms.
  • 'Jammed': It is possible to generate enough activity in the force via use of abilities that the array will be unable to distinguish each use and thus accurately track targets. The ease of which this can be done is proportional to the size of the array, which is relative to the size of the platform it is mounted on.
  • Inaccurate Targeting (ship-scale variant): Given that the array tracks individuals, unless the ship itself is alchemically enhanced or in some way imbued with the force, the targeting data will not be the most accurate for the purposes of engaging another vessel in combat.
  • Out of Range (ship-scale variant): If a ship jumps to hyperspace before it is tracked, then it will quickly leave the operational range of the Gar Strill array.
  • It's Stuck! (ship-scale variant): The array's retractable design can lead to problems. If the bay door, or the mechanism becomes damaged, then the array will be unable to be full extended, resulting in reduced range or in the case with voidstone/yorik coral lined hulls, completely nullified.
  • Exposed (Vehicle/Infantry/Droid version): The ground version of the array isn't retractable, and is exposed to both the elements and enemy fire.
  • EMP/Ion: While the crystals themselves aren't affected by EMP or Ion damage, the electronics in the array, though well shielded, are still prone to being damaged by powerful weapons of that nature.
DESCRIPTION
"There's something ironic about this, but with how much of an advantage it is, I really don't shabla care."
- Squadron Leader Aenarr Kyrr Aenarr Kyrr
The Gar Strill was designed to put into the hands of commanders one of the most powerful detection tools available, one that is scarcely ever defended against, without any of the crew or the commanders themselves having to be force sensitive and thus having the typical disadvantages that came with that. The Gar Strill is a rare example of technology that was developed following the contract with the CIS and the ba'slan shev'la, and builds on experience and observations earned from numerous battles fought alongside the Confederacy and her allies. The Gar Strill's development had taken up a considerable amount of research and development time, and it's expense has prevented its widespread deployment, but the company is confident that it'll pay back its cost in due time.
At its core, the Gar Strill is an oversized force detector, capable of detecting force sensitive lifeforms and objects at a great distance, and is additionally capable of detecting use of the force at the same distances. It can be tuned to ignore minor uses, and focus on wide-scale use of force powers such as battle meditation. As with the smaller scale force detectors, the Gar Strill's display will indicate their force alignment textually as well as with the same holographic display as the smaller version. Naturally, however, creatures, substances and phenomenon that can't be detected via the force, or disrupt detection via the force, will prevent the Gar Strill array from detecting them. This includes but is not limited to, Ysalamiri, Void Stone, Yorik Coral and force dead life forms. Furthermore, it is possible to generate enough activity in the force via use of abilities that the array will be unable to distinguish each use and thus accurately track targets. The ease of which this can be done is proportional to the size of the array, which is relative to the size of the platform it is mounted on.
The Gar Strill, however, can also detect targets even if they're not force sensitive. This feature is usually turned off unless looking for specific individuals or attempting to locate a stealthed vessel via it's crew in a particular area around the ship. This does mean that the crew has to be vaguely aware of where the other ship is if attempting to do so in a crowded area of space. The same concept applies to ground vehicles/infantry.
However, detection isn't the only forte of the array. The Gar Strill can track targets such that a targeting suite can be used to engage said targets. This is particularly useful when dealing with stealth ships, but given that the array tracks individuals, unless the ship itself is alchemically enhanced or in some way imbued with the force, the targeting data will not be the most accurate for the purposes of engaging another vessel in combat. The array can make use of it's tracking abilities to compute navigational data for targets it is tracking, including through hyperspace out to the distance of the size of the average star system in the case of the version mounted on corvette and larger ships. If a ship jumps to hyperspace before it is tracked, however, then it will quickly leave the operational range of the Gar Strill array, preventing it from being tracked by the array.
The starship/station variant retracts into the hull to protect it from enemy fire when not in use. The array's retractable design can lead to problems. If the bay door, or the mechanism becomes damaged, then the array will be unable to be full extended, resulting in reduced range or in the case with voidstone/yorik coral lined hulls, completely nullified. The vehicle/infantry/droid version doesn't suffer from this issue, however it is exposed to both the elements and enemy fire. In either case, the array's weakness to EMP and Ion weapons, as well protected as it is against both, becomes evident when particularly powerful EMP/Ion weapons are brought to bear against the array. Any damage that carries through can seriously damage the sensitive electronics, though the crystals themselves remain unaffected.
