The creature was so dainty that he'd almost overlooked it entirely.
Poor thing was caught upon the twisting branches of a low bush, where thorny spines waited for prey such as this. One beautiful wing still flapped incessantly, in truth its motion was all that had managed to draw his attention. The other was tucked back, immobile.
As he crouched down and slowly began to remove it from its prison, he realized what it was that now lay cradled within his hands. The small humming peeper. Far more common on the moon of Endor, but certainly not unheard of here on Kegan. So far from the City Circles as he was, it made sense that they would be more abundant. As much as they enjoyed toying with the daydreams of sentients, there was always a risk to be had when existing near such. Birds such as these were highly sought after for their gorgeous plumage, more often caged if discovered than allowed to roam free.
A shame. Truly.
"There we go..." he breathed, as he detangled the last of its feathers and brought it from the shrubbery entirely. With the light of the day's sun upon it he was made aware of its various injuries in full, and could not help but frown in response. As much as he was against caging such, he knew that if he left it in this state it would surely die. As such he brought it with him as he rose back up and continued to assess the situation.
"Let's get you tended to, shall we?"
One stray finger ran against its pink, feathered belly, as he did his best to keep it from increasing in panic. Shock could be fatal to creatures such as this, and that was the last thing he wanted for it...

Dis, as always, travelled to different places, researched, discovered and studied in different places, trying to learn. That is, they did what an average Shadow used to do. Today, the planet Kegan got in its way. The Shadowcat is usually used to look for different objects and wrecks, which they can then collect and make new things out of it with their companions. They wondered a few times how bored Greystone and Zahra Teph had gotten things from them. But that’s when they always remembers that they’re not the only one doing that, so they used to calm down.

That’s exactly what they were doing when Dis spotted a young man in one of the places who was caring for a bird. The bird got stuck in a bush and they were very interesting and beautiful species. The Shadowcat has never seen such a beautiful animal before. And of course so much goodwill a long time ago. They had spent most of their time on Korriban, or Dromund Kaas, lately, and had not seen much of this in the Sith.

At Spear, yes, but also there mostly in the Jedi, or neutral part. In any case, it was interesting. They were currently sitting a few metres away from the young man, invisible. Dis tilted their head slightly to the side and thus watched the rescue process. They still found it interesting and, of course, very caring.

So far, the Shadowcat hadn’t seen many of these where someone would have rescued an injured animal. rather, the opposite is usually the case, that they hurt animals. So the young man was already sympathetic to them for trying to help. Dis finally decided to address him, didn't want to show up yet, so they hadn't done so yet.

~ Will the sick bird be okay, didn't they? ~ asked telepathically, also conveying concern to the young man.

Dis hoped they wouldn't scare the other much; it was precisely this bad experience that they did not know how to reveal and introduce themselves. That’s why they had so many negative experiences so far.

Unaware of the unseen prying eyes, Beren held his focus solely upon the bird in his care. A few feet from the shrubbery he paused, and slowly sank down to a seated position; the bird was brought upon his lap, where his outer robes formed somewhat of a hammock. It did not fight him, did not continue the fluttering of its wings, and in that moment the Force flowed freely between the two. Serene, compelling, as though all the care in all the Galaxy pooled forth from him to it.
"We shall get you right as rain again soon," he assured it, with a nod, and the way in which he spoke seemed to suggest he felt certain that the creature could hear him, nay understand him. A small smile pulled at his lips as the dainty thing chirped, its chest rising and falling at a much slower rate now. Natural, almost. Not quite.
He reached into the pack he'd brought with him, but before he could pull free whatever it was he was collecting he faltered. His brows knitted together as a voice unfamiliar to him rang out within his mind. His eyes drifted about the space he was sat within, though he could catch no glimpse of a being nearby. Just the bird.
And it certainly hadn't been the bird.
Somehow he figured that speaking aloud might be enough to answer whoever or whatever it was. After all, speech ran through the mind before it was uttered, even if only for a second. If someone was in his mind, it would hear him then surely. Despite his innate curiosity there was a surprising lack of fear or concern in his voice. As though he didn't care that there was a stranger prying in the sanctity of his mind.
"She will recover, with enough time."
The statement was uttered with a certainty, a firmness to the voice yet also a softness of tone. As though no doubt could exist within the words he said. There was no room for such, after all. What was would be. And what would be was.

Yes, the loud speech was perfectly enough for Dis to hear the answer. They were glad the bird would be fine, though as an inhabitant of the Netherworld they knew and accepted that death was completely natural. But a saved soul can always bring joy to anyone, especially to the Shadowcat, so they were happy with that too. After their “words,” they saw the young man looking for where they were. Dis hadn't gotten any closer yet, just sitting where they were before. After their previous experience, the Shadow preferred not to be too close to anyone.

After the answer, they also tried to pay attention to the bird and address the bird as well. Dis was a specialist in this Force skill to be able to talk to animals. They also had the advantage of using animals mainly as a host. Tried to reassure the bird, who is no longer fighting; told them that the mortal, or organic… biped, this was better understood by the bird just wanting to help and not wanting to hurt them; of course adding to what the man said he would heal them.

~ They're still scared a little and say it hurts under their neck because something hit and stabbed them when they crashed into the bush. ~ "said," worried, and also conveyed that feeling to Beren.

They then appeared visibly, in bobcat size, with shadows around them and large white eyes. Dis was still sharpening their ears and their tail was moving with interest as they stretched their neck up and forward to see better, but for now the Shadowcat hadn't gotten any closer than a distance of about four to five metres.

~ Thanks for helping them! Most would have let them suffer or die. ~

"A puncture?" he gently lifted the head of the bird just enough to expose a patch of its neck, bloody as it was, and hummed under his breath. A frown settled over his expression, though even so when he next spoke it was with a sincere gratitude. "Thank you."
At this point there was still nothing to observe so he did not continue looking for the one who spoke to him, he focused on carefully beginning to clean the bird's injuries with something he'd pulled out of that satchel. A small medkit of sorts, though much of what lay inside wasn't exactly geared toward sentients.
It took him a moment to realize that something had in fact manifested nearby, so focused was he on the animal in his care. When he spotted it though he gave it just a brief once over, and his smile returned.
"There you are," he muttered, with an approving nod of his head, "What an intriguing specimen... I did not know there were cats such as you here..."
Once he'd finished patching up the bird as best he could, he turned his full attention toward the shadowy feline. He gave it his full attention, even meeting its gaze with his own though he would never, ever be caught doing such to a fellow sentient. This was different, though. Animals were easier to exist around.
"Have you a name?" he inquired, tilting his head slightly to the side. He didn't seem at all perplexed about the fact that it was talking to him, telepathically or not. "I am Beren, and this one is ... Sind. Yes. Sind." He very gently lifted the bird as he said that, as though to gesture toward it as he gave it a name. Or perhaps gleaned it. Who knew.

Dis continued to watch the young man deal with the bird. Now that extra injury has also been looked at. And not long after, Beren noticed them. Since they could not smile, that is, it would not have seen, they moved their tail happily and conveyed feelings similar to smiling to the young man.

~ I’m not really a cat, I’m a Shadow, I have a humanoid form, but I like this one better. However, if you felt the humanoid was more comfortable to you, I could choose that as well. ~ Dis “said” to the young man.

The Shadowcat didn't turn away, but reciprocated his full attention with their snow-white, iris-free eyes and the fact that they looked into Beren's eyes.

~ I'm Dis, the Shadow, or Shadowcat. Nice to meet you, Beren! And I am also glad that Sind will be healed! ~ they replied amicably and still conveyed enthusiasm to the young man.

Because they had judged so far that it wasn’t the other one who wasn’t going to hurt them, so they went a little closer and this time up to about a meter away and sat down there again.

~ I have never seen a bird as beautiful as Sind. What kind of species is he? And where did you learn to heal? ~ they inquired curiously and also conveyed curiosity towards Beren.

"Oh, please don't change," the young man expressed, with a soft shake of his head, "Be who you feel most comfortable being; and I much prefer such company to fellow humanoids..." Well Sentients too, but somehow this didn't feel like it counted. As eyes met eyes a genuine warmth fell over the boy's face, and he patted the ground nearby should the shadowcat wish to settle down also.
"Dis... That is a good name. Yes, that name suits you well."
He glanced down at the bird within his grasp and pondered on the questions she asked regarding it and its healing. Some would refuse to say such to a stranger, he knew, but he'd never felt the need to hide his heritage from those he met. So with a mental shrug he decided to respond in truth.
"This one is a humming peeper... More often found on Endor, though clearly Kegan has them also. Isn't he a beauty?"
He lifted the bird gently up from his lap so that the shadowcat could get a proper look at it, and its beautiful plumage.
"As for where I learned, I belong to the Je'daii. We are encouraged to learn about a great many things... I am not the greatest of healers, certainly it's not my path in life, but what little I know does come in handy during moments such as these."
His head tilted lightly to the left as he regarded the shadowcat. "Are there more of your kind? I have never heard tale of you before..."

They nodded at Beren's words that they didn't have to change their appearance because the young man found this better. As the shadows that formed the Shadowcat moved with them, they followed their movement. As the young man praised their name, they conveyed joy and happiness to him. It was a good feeling for Shadowcat to be praised.

~ Thanks! I felt like this might be the proper name when I chose it. ~

Humming peeper; they found the name of the bird species a little amusing but also cute. Before the Shadowcat could react to that, however, Beren mentioned Endor. Dis ruffled their shadowy fur and took a position that is customary for a cat if they don’t like something or are just scared . Only the hiss was missing from the sequence.

~ Bad things have been happening on Endor lately. ~ they explained. ~ And yes, I agree with you, very beautiful. ~ remarked this in connection with the bird.

Then, carefully, the Shadowcat came even closer to see the bird up close. Tilted their head to the side when Beren mentioned the Je’daii order to them; Dis had never heard of them before, only the Jedi, the Sith, and the Gray Jedi. But this Je’daii sounded very much to them like a Jedi.

~ Oh! I had never heard of Je’daii before. What can I know about them? Are they like the Jedi? ~ they inquired curiously and also conveyed these feelings.

They nodded enthusiastically again to the new question about the Shadows and soon answered.

~ We live in the Netherworld, although most of us were “born” here in Realspace, so am I. We are a relatively new race created by a Sith Lord shortly before his death. We are able to occupy the bodies of others to affect the physical world, but if we do not, we are immaterial and essentially invisible, only others can see us if we want to. ~
