LOCATION INFORMATION
  • Capital City: Shatter Rock
  • Planetary Features: Belvore was once a beautiful temperate world with towering deciduous trees, rolling fields of flowers in every color imaginable and seas of deep turquoise. Under its surface, was an untold wealth of metal ores and pockets of precious gems. A beauty that was destroyed in a devastating mining accident. Now the planets surface is a rocky barren wasteland. Towering stone pillars stand tall above seas of sand that were once oceans, forests of deciduous trees were reduced to ash and cool summer rains are nothing more than hot sandstorms. Remaining pools of water well up from deep below the planet in the form of hot springs. Inside these springs are colonies of algae and other microorganisms, the only true native life left on the planet.
  • Major Locations:

    • Shatter rock, the capital city of Belvore. Originally named Fortune Hill by its original founder and funder of the mines. After the disastrous mining accident that caused a large portion of the neighbouring hill to split apart, the colony was renamed Shatter Rock by the miners before they abandoned it. The colony itself is built partly into the mountain, upon which it is expanding into more to escape the harsh elements. The outermost sections of the colony are protected by ray shielding and thick transparisteel view ports. Landing pads for larger vessels are located on the edges of the city, which are protected by ray shields. Smaller vessels can dock in hangar bays built into the mountain itself. Many of the colonists live inside the mountain, while ore processing facilities are kept on the surface.

    • Shatter Rock Mine, the life blood of that keeps a colony going on this dying world. From above, the mine looks like a deep hole carved into the planet with durasteel plates and supports holding it up. At the base is several landing pads and magnetic transports. Six large steel doors are situated along the walls of the mine. Behind these doors is where everything truly takes place. Kilometers of tunnels run in every direction, miners and machines work day and night unearthing metals and previous gems. Large conveyor belts carry everything to holding rooms before being transported by underground rail to the capital of Shatter Rock. The work themselves reach the mine by underground rail.

    • Valley of the storm bringer. One of Belvore's very few points of interest. This deep valley with its massive metal loaded stone pillars was once the planet's deepest ocean. After the mining accident that rendered the planet near lifeless and evaporated most of the planets water, this valley became a new wonder entirely. Strong winds blow across this empty sand covered land, picking up dust and sand particles along the way. These particles rub against the stone and metal pillars causing static build up until it is released in the form of lightning. Winds moving out of the valley can carry these electrically charged dust storms for kilometers across the planet's surface, effecting electronics, mining equipment and even ship traffic.

POPULATION
  • Native Species: None
  • Immigrated Species: Arsenian, human, near human
  • Population: Sparse: 2,000
  • Demographics: over 90% Arsenian, 8% human, 2% near human
  • Primary Languages: Avarae and Galactic basic
  • Culture: Arsenian
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
  • Government: One elected official with a governing council, answers to the government of Arsenae
  • Affiliation: Arsenae
  • Wealth: Low: Belvore is a mining planet that solely relies on the export of raw ore and gemstones. Most of the exports go to employee pay, overhead for colony and mine maintenance or much needed imports.
  • Stability: Medium, Belvore has little in the way of crimes. While some minor crimes do happen, nothing serious happens within the colony or mines. Most of the serious issues only happen when pirates attempt to raid freighters leaving the system. Many of which are quickly chased off by the larger vessels of the system security.
  • Freedom & Oppression: Belvore is a pretty free place with little to hinder ones choices. Basic laws against theft and murder are enforced like on most planets. Any real laws that do hinder colonists are only those that apply to traveling outside the safety of the colony or mines.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
  • Military: Belvore has no standing military. Rather all the defenses for Shatter Rock and the system come from the parent planet of Arsenae. Soldiers are garrisoned in the colony with a small outpost connected to the mines. Cruisers and frigates patrol the shipping lanes going to and from the planet. Several anti-fighter cannons and missile launchers are set up around the colonies perimeter.
  • Technology: Galactic standard
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Belvore and the system of Thulea were discovered during an expedition lead by Jirros Vellor. Vellor was an entrepreneur of a man always looking for the next big idea to land him and his investors a mountain of credits. The idea for a mining operation came to him after touring one with a business partner. He was quick to gather several of his investors and pitched the idea of finding an undiscovered planet to start a mining operation. Some were slow to agree to such an idea, and the cost, but all finally agreed and put forth a large some of credits each. Half a year went by before one of the expedition teams discovered the Thulea system and the metal rich planet of Belvore. Vellor set out immediately to begin gathering resources for the mine. He spent thousands on building a colony to house his workers and their families and the mine itself.

The first of Vellor's mistakes came when he began hiring workers who had more enthusiasm then skill. Accidents began to pile up, slowing down operations and forcing him to spend more credits to find better safety equipment and workers. His second mistake was not properly researching the machines and equipment he was buying, most ended up costing more than they should have. His third, and most devastating, mistake came from the inex of his freighter pilots, who he chose based on cut of profits rather than experience. Six months after the operation began, the biggest accident of.all happened. A convoy of three freighters hauling mining waste and damaged equipment collide with a large bulk freighter carrying high yield mining explosives. The three freighters were bunched up to tightly to avoid any damage when the first vessel struck the bulk freighter. The bulk freighter itself was reaching orbit at a much higher speed than neccessary. All four ships were ripped apart on the edge of Belvore's orbit. Mining explosives, toxic waste and ships parts began raining down on the planet. Some debris drifted in orbit for hours even days before falling to the planet. Each piece of cargo slamming into the ground with tremendous force. Fires raged through Belvore's forests, toxic sludge spilled into the oceans and high yield explosives devastated the land. The accident not only killed the crew of the freighters, but also workers below who couldn't reach safety in time. Fallout from the accident went from bad to worse as environmental damage rapidly spread with no way of stopping it. The atmosphere thinned and oxygen levels dropped, oceans and lakes dried out and nearly every living thing that didn't die from the initial destruction died off. After a slow several month death, the beautiful planet of Belvore was no more.

Shortly after debris stopped falling from the sky, many miners up and left, calling the place cursed. For Vellor, it truly did seem cursed, setback after setback cost him time, credits and now lives. From the very start things had gone wrong, but he never believed that he would end up seeing an accident costing dozens of lives. With almost every miner gone and no funding left to hire more, Vellor was forced to close down the mine. His troubles didn't end there as his investors began hounding him for their share of credits back. With little choice, he had to sell off the entire rights to the system, as very few wanted a cursed mine like his. He quickly found a buyer in the form of the Arsenians. After a bit if negotiations, they managed to talk him down in price for the systems rights, and promised him a share of the income till he could get the investors off his back.

One everything was said and done. The Arsenians began moving miners and their families into the capital of Shatter Rock. The capital was originally known as Fortune Hill, that was until a chunk of one of the freighters crashed nearby and cracked apart a neighboring hill and a small section of the city, then it was renamed Shatter Rock. The Arsenians repaired and rebuilt the city to handle the new climate created by the accident that devastated the planet. One of the first things they did before reopening the mine, was hire more experienced people to teach their own miners. No one wanted a repeat of Vellor's folly.
