Believing that the true test of a corporation's skill came not from how long they could make something, but how small, Clan Rekali Inc. Craftsmen set about to create one of the most sophisticated probes in the galaxy, in as small a package as possible. To achieve this, the outer casing of both the droid's core body and outer shell is made of an ultra-thin, ultra-light Phrik plating that also serves as the structural foundation for the delicate internal circuitry of the droid. By using the same micronization technology used to create both crushgaunts, echani weaponry, and other nano-technology throughout the galaxy, the craftsmen behind this droid have managed to greatly condense numerous sensors and other electronics into a very cramped package.
Unable to truly micronize a suitably intelligent droid brain within the limited space available within the parameters of the design, craftsmen were instead able to micronize their Crystal Interface Terminal design small enough to fit within the baseball-sized core body of the droid. Within this terminal, a small fragment of a sentient crystal could be placed within the body of the droid to act as the brain. It was at this point that the creation was relabeled from droid to exosuit to suit the new nature of the project.
Capable of housing a wide range of sentient crystals, including Shards, Tsils, Nakfet, and Amberite, the BEEP-XD can serve as either body or "escape pod" for any crystal life-form roughly the same size as a lightsaber crystal.
Each of the eight outer spike-like sections of shell contains a dense network of micronized circuitry and miniaturized mechanical parts that supports the numerous scanners and other devices included in the design. While these shell-spikes are primarily held against the central body of the droid as a result of the repulsor that the droid uses to maneuver, a weak energy field maintains a secure connection between each individual shell-spike and the core body of the droid. Though these circuits are connected to the core body no mater where on the body they are touching, the crystal/droid will often spin these outer spikes into a preferred position before using a particular sensor or other component. The micronized repulsor enables the droid to fly at speeds roughly comparable to a slow groundspeeder or the faster running speeds of a humanoid, this also enables the droid to fly comfortably at heights of 15-25 meters with vertical flight and hovering capabilities at heights of upto 50 meters.
The power source of the droid uses a tiny fragment of electrically charged Soul-Steel paired with wiring to an equally tiny fragment of Pyronium. The flow of energy between these two exotic materials serves as a near limitless battery for the BEEP-XD, flowing directly into the crystal lifeform that comprises the center of the droid before being shunted to the various components of the droid/exosuit. A flaw in the design is that exposure to force nullification fields will disable the power-source of the droid. If the BEEP-XD does not flee the nullification field within two minutes, the energy stored within the crystal lifeform will deplete and the BEEP-XD will fall to the ground, immobile and without power, trapping the crystal lifeform within until external power is applied or it is removed from the nullification field. If left in this state for too long, the crystal lifeform runs the risk of dieing as its own energy is slowly leeched away by the Pyronium in the battery, though the process takes decades.
Recognizing the need to protect the crystal lifeform from the effects of the Soul-Steel power source, an ultra-thin, single-lense Jal Shay focusing lense was used in the construction of the droid. Serving to both protect the mental and emotional state of the droid, the lense also serves as the perfect medium from which to both project upon and detect the world around it. Numerous sensors and scanners of various strengths and capabilities are contained within the tiny droid. When actively scanning using its more powerful sensors, fields and beams of visible light, ultraviolet light, and electromagnetic energy are emitted from the "eye" of the droid upon whatever it is scanning. Likewise, a similar visible beams and fields are emitted when the droid uses its laser/electromagnetic based computer interface probe to remotely (within a meter or so) access and interact with a computer or other electronic device.
Initially designed to be a defenseless, but durable droid, the crystal lifeform within the exosuit proved an interesting and unique component. By channeling large quantities of energy into itself, the crystal lifeform is capable of enhancing and focusing the energy discharges of its soul-steel battery through itself and the Jal Shay focusing lense into a short range (3-5 meters maximum) burst of directional energy. To do so though is incredibly draining/exhausting for the small crystal lifeform and can only be performed once every several minutes. This form of 'attack' is almost always an electrical discharge, though it is not unknown for individual BEEP-XD to instead project thermal or kinetic energy beams.
Intense activity from the crystal lifeform can disrupt some of the features of the exosuit. When building energy or force-based abilities, or when particularly focused upon an task, the build-up of energy may cause the field holding the outer shell together to weaken. This results in the outer shell of the droid separating and drifting around the core body. Though these shell-spikes almost never fall away completely and will return to their appropriate position when the period of intense core activity subsides.
