Battle Report

Well after his return to Mandalorian space from the skies of Eriadu, Larraq was troubled by the events that had transpired there. Rarely had he seen a Naval engagement collapse so quickly. Before his fleet could even arrive on the battlefield, the Fringe fleet had been routed and sent fleeing the system. Through personally experience, Rygel Larraq was aware of the ships, weapons, and tactics used by the Omega Protectorate as they fired upon and pursued his ships across Eriadu.

But what he wasn't aware of were the tactics utilized so effectively by the Protectorate Navy that had routed the Fringe. Likewise, he was only able to obtain good intelligence on the lighter and faster of the Protectorate ships during his engagement with their fleet. What he desperately needed to know, for the good of his people and for the potential benefit to his company, were the capabilities of the Protectorate's larger ships and the tactics he could expect from them.

To obtain the information he needed though, he had only one option. He had to ask nicely.

"This is Mandal Hypernautics CEO Rygel Larraq." Larraq said into the communicator in his desk. "I was recently hired to assist Fringe commanders in a Naval engagement that went poorly before I could arrive to provide assistance. I'd like to speak with those commanders about the nature of the engagement and the possible acquisition of battle-reports."

The transmission was encrypted of course. But Rygel Larraq had no doubt that it would reach its intended recipients safely. In the meantime though, Larraq leaned back, sipped on a mug of coffee, and watched holographic projections of known Omega Protectorate ships scroll along the far wall of his office on Sundari.

Gavin sat in his small squadron commander's office sipping a vodka martini and writing a request for ship repairs. His brown eyes scanned the list of ships and the various needs they had. He had unceremoniously been made the commander of a fleet and then just as quickly been sent packing back to his position as a commander of a fighter squadron. He had expected far worse but he had lucked out it seemed and kept his flight status.

He just finished his last request when a call came through for his to speak with the Mandalorian fleet commander that was supposed to be his back up. Gavin had been a Mando pilot once upon a time and also a Death Watch but that was something he no longer cared to remember. He pulled out an old holotranceiver and set it on his desk, then answered the call.

"First lieutenant Ovmar here." He said leaning back in his chair still wearing his black flight suit for a TIE fighter, "what can I do ya for Rally Master?"

Rygel Larraq took another sip of his coffee as the Fringe Lieutenant introduced himself. "Greeting Lieutenant. As you most likely know, elements of Mandal Hypernautics' Security Division were hired on to assist the Fringe's Navy at the Battle of Eriadu. Unfortunately, that battle did not exactly go the way we had planned, despite considerable intelligence gathering on the part of the Fringe. Now I've been going over the battle using the data I have available on my end, but I'm still unable to piece together exactly what went wrong. I would like to request a copy of the Battle Report your navy collected. With a more in-depth analysis of the Protectorate Fleet at my disposal, I feel I will be better equipped to devise ships and tactics to better serve the Fringe and the Mandalorian Navies should further aggression with the Omega Protectorate become a reality."

The Battle report! More like the career damage report. Gavin shuffled some data chips on his desk and pulled one out and plugged it into the holotransceiver.

"Here...wait no thats pictures of the twins and their twins." He said shuffling through more chips before finding the correct one. "You can keep those images."

Gavin unplugged the chip and inserted another containing all data they had including what came from several ship recording devices before they were destroyed.

"Here is the full report. Images, weapons used, ranges, everything." Gavin leaned back, "did you need anything else?"

Rygel Larraq arched an eyebrow in surprise at the mans willingness to share the documents. He had been expecting far more resistance from the Fringe on the matter. If it ever became a problem, this [member="Gavin Ovmar"] could probably be hung for disclosing military secrets. Larraq hoped it would never come to that as he scratched his eyebrow and then opened the documents. "Thank you Mr Ovmar." Larraq said as he glanced through the files. "This should help nicely."

Uploading the files to an isolated processor network, Larraq began reviewing the documents. It did indeed appear to be everything. Sensor readings, visual logs, weapon profiles, ship maneuvers, recorded communications... The communications were encrypted of course, but would be easy enough to break with a little time and a decent slicer. Larraq watched as the computer correlated the data into a holographic projection of the battlefield. Larraq watched the conflict from start to finish at 500x normal speed. He watched as ships entered the solar system and maneuvered around each other. He watched as the Protectorate fleet hid behind a wall of small ships emitting overlapped shields and the big guns of the Protectorate fleet tore apart the disorganized fleet of the Fringe.

To Larraq, it was a marvel that the tactic had worked at all. Had the Fringe made better use of light, fast escorts or fighters and bombers, they could have easily broken through the upper and lower limits of the shield wall and forced the Protectorate to break their formation. But from what Larraq was seeing, the Fringe had focused on large, ungainly ships in an attempt to overpower the Protectorate. It had been a gamble. One that better intelligence or logistics could have easily prevented.

However... The Protectorate had brought an impressively powerful fleet. Not exactly in the size or composition. But in the overall battleplan. It had been as if the entire fleet had been assembled specifically to utilize this one and only maneuver. And as a defensive fleet, there had clearly not been enough time for the Protectorate to be picky about what ships and formations it sent to defend the planet. Logically... The only reason such a formation would be encountered at Eriadu was if that was how the Protectorate had always intended to defend the planet, or if they had been assembling the fleet there as a rapid response or offensive fleet.

Larraq sighed and sipped from a cup of coffee as he contemplated each prospect. It was a slow, immobile fleet. He himself had proven as much by escaping Eriadu at all. Had he brought a larger or more comprehensive fleet, he could have easily decimated the defensive fleet in a war of attrition. Strike and run. Attack key military and civilian targets on the planet, run from the significantly slower fleet as it attempts to intervene, and strike at a different target on another section of the planet. The Protectorate would be forced to split up their forces and send their faster ships to try and save the planet... Which would allow an offensive force to weaken the fleet until they could be overpowered.

That... Or the offensive force could simply beat the Protectorate at their own game. Larraq sipped his coffee again as he pondered that particular idea. It wouldn't be particularly hard. The Mandalorian navy already had several large, powerful ships. All they would need is a shield specializing ship that could do the same job, but better. Finishing the last of his coffee, Larraq chose to focus his attention on the fleet that had been encountered at Eriadu. For all he knew, the Protectorate was using that as their standard fleet formation throughout their territories. And if that was the case, they would find themselves incredibly vulnerable to anyone smart enough to not use two dimensional tactics. Mainly siege and artillery tactics or stand and shoot tactics.
