Like the B1-M and the B2-CS Droids, the B2-J's original purpose of being built was to respond to the different types of worlds across the Galaxy, with this droid being the answer to the problem with Gas Giants. Once the production of the first version of the B2-J was underway, reports of two types of Separatist B2 Battle Droids utilizing Jetpacks were found in different locations across the Galaxy during the Clone Wars. Thus, the original designs and droids were scrapped, and the combination variant was put together and built to replace the original design.

- The Jetpack has 4 thrusters built into it, 2 for propulsion, two for course correction. The Pack also had small flaps on the back that also were used for course correction and stability in the air.
- The Heavy Wrist Mounted Blasters the B2-J has built-in are capable of firing 6 shots simultaneously, allowing for a high amount of devastation.
- The amount of control surfaces on the Jetpack besides the two main thrusters allows the droid to remain stable in the air, with complete control of its balance.
- Like the B2 Jump trooper and B2 Rocket Trooper of the Clone Wars, the B2-J can also be utilized to become organized boarding parties onto enemy vessels, jumping from one ship and flying to another.
- The control surfaces, more specifically the Flaps, can be shot and broken off, which if the droid is in mid-flight can cause it to lose some stability.
- The Two main thrusters utilize semi-medium sized canisters of Tibanna Gas as a fuel source, meaning if shot in the correct place on the back, the jetpack can detonate, reducing the flight capabilities of the B2-J to nothing.
