Strengths:
  • Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done -

Here, the weapon known as Astra finds its purpose. A brutal, dominating weapon capable of tearing asunder massive capital ships with technologic endurance with the best of them. Its this power that allows its to destroy flagships, fleets, and singular entities with impunity the likes of which the galaxy has never seen; and cruel example of the potential a weapon has when created with absolute destruction in mind. There is no equal, no weapon that exists today that can match the Astra short of a super weapon.

The power it holds can be displayed in two forms, two artistic forms that each find their own purpose in their destructive beauty. The first, a ship to ship capital weapon for the ages, capable of disabling shields and naval vessels alike; its singular beam able to tear a Star Destroyer in half. A single judgement, made manifest through the beam formed in the belly of the beast, powerful enough to send shivers down the spine of an entire fleet.

Second, however, is against planets. Although nowhere near the strength of the Eclipse Class’s Axial based Proton Beam Cannon, nor the Sovereign's, the Astra is capable of precision strikes against city blocks and planetary shielding greater than most traditional orbital bombardment arsenals. Even so, to truly witness its beauty it should always be used against other naval targets instead of the planetary mess; especially considering the collateral damage.

[*]Lightyear Away -

  • To reach out and touch God, is often the metaphor used to describe the effective range of the Astra’s beam. Designed to destroy at range provided the proper complex equations to actually hit a target, the Astra is able to reach out across nearly an entire system before becoming unreasonable to hit another ship. A ship to ship sniper, it is best placed on vessels who are capable of performing quick strikes, decisive actions that define entire engagements rather than a consistent struggle between fleets.

Still, despite its extreme range, after a while the beam will begin to dissipate and unfocus itself. While powerful when highly concentrated, there is an eventually powerless stream of energy that finds no more power than the casual blow of air one can create with their own mouth provided atmosphere. Even proper calculations on this will not stop the beam from eventually failing, no matter the power packed into its destructive form factor.

Weaknesses:
  • A Tad Overweight -
Clocking in at just about 2km’s in length, the weapon is gargantuan even for most main gun capital weapons. Housing a long ‘barrel’ of focusing crystals, kyber harnesses, reflecting mirrors, and secondary enhancing lasers, there is plenty to deal with when putting the weapon in a ship. Everything from the frame, to the subframe must be designed (or redesigned) to handle its cumbersome length, and girth. In effect, while salvageable there is almost no way to put the cannon on anything but ships 3kms or greater. Anything shorter than this would not have the proper room for systems, nor the proper placement to allow for it to operate properly, likely leading to the first test fire to end in both the ship’s death, and the weapons.

[*]Gluttony -

  • With great power comes great cost, and as such the weapon finds its greatest weakness. The capacitors built to handle the weapon draw immense power from the reactors to properly charge, but also the primary source of power for when the omnipotent beam to fire. When fired, every single capacitor bank is drained instantly, and forced to recharge directly after; automatically drawing from the reactor(s) the most power that can possibly be taken, letting all other primary systems fall into secondary as for a minute the ship refills them to the minimum requirement.

This means that after firing a single five second burst of the beam, the entire ship must power off. Blackness, the void, the silent wait of return fire is all that responds to a ship who decides to utilize the weapon in the heat of battle; restricting its uses to extremely situational engagements where control is entirely in the controller. If done at the wrong time, or countered immediately, the ship with this aboard would be exposed to the full might of any counterattack one might see fit to impose on them.

In addition, the weapon's capacitors take nearly a full twenty four standard galactic hours to properly prepare for a second shot. Due to its actual drain, there is only one viable shot capable of being performed in a battle, only a singular given flurry in any given conflict makes it an even more deadly weapon to be used. It is as single shot as single shot comes, riding entirely on its ability to perform immense destruction in its alpha and omega judgement.

It is a weapon meant for win all, or lose all. There is no in between.

[*]Difficult Shot -

  • Thousands of mirrors all adjusted to enhance the beam to its ultimate power at a predetermined distance from the vessel takes extremely complicated equations performed in a moments notice. It is almost impossible to do so with a human crew alone, and hundreds of intertwined robotics systems must be utilized to bring the weapon to proper alignment, lest the weapon firing creates a passive beam of pacifism rather than the unadulterated war judgement it was initially meant to be.

These calculations are made even more difficult the smaller the target, the farther it is from the original ship, and the exact speed it is moving at. In effect, hyper maneuverable or fast ships are able to dodge the beam rather than bear its brunt force against their shields and hull. Without dedicated aiming computers, automated mechanic adjustments, and more, the weapon if extremely fallible to missing or lacking its full brunt; making it once more a highly situational weapon.

[*]Static Mount -

  • Two kilometers of adjustment and fine tuning is taxing on the system as a whole, forcing the genesis of the weapon to be static. There is no way to turn the weapon into an adjustable aimed weapon, and only static positioning will allow for proper functionality. Even a minor five degree aiming adjustment would create an extreme difference in what initial calculations would provide, making the shot worthless compared to more traditional means of combat. Should the weapon miss, there is no adjustment, no manipulation of the equations to allow a better shot.

It must wait until the next volley is ready.

DESCRIPTION
First theorized by The Slave while presiding over Lorrd, he imagined a ship based weapon capable of shooting at lengths equal to the VT-SI-19 Stealth Sniper Rifle he often used to decimate Dominion patrols during this escapade or that. He thought its immediate power, its almost soundless design, the look on the victim’s faces when their friend falls before them, all came together in such a magnificent piece of art that he just had to replicate it on an intergalactic scale. To paint the stars with nothing more than the blood and carnage of an enemy fleet was all that was to be needed.

Eventually, his dream came true with his ascension to leader of The Dominion. Siphoning their federal income, stealing from them a Mepherium Class Battlecruiser, The Slave created what was to be known as The Technicolor Beat; a ship that was him personified. Aboard, the AI known as Cybele who would see him guided into the future by her cybernetic motherhood; but there was something more important for the sake of the history regarding to Astra and it’s creation. The primordial version of itself was put aboard the vessel, crafted as a Proton Beam Cannon capable of immeasurable destruction, but one that would not see The Slave’s vision come to life.

No, despite the punishment such a weapon could deal out, there was something far worse to be had; something that truly needed to be offered to the galaxy as a whole. Fast forward nearly two years, where now the ascension of Jaeger Solutions allows for massive credit influx for The Slave and his creative ventures. Aboard The Technicolor Beat, next to the grandfather of his soon to be love child of a cannon, he began to draw up the designs for the ultimate galactic weapon. A grin would spread across his demon like face, letting nothing but cruel facilitations create the next evolution of his dream.

Insert Astra, the next step in Proton Beam technology. Finding a baseline in what constitutes traditional super lasers, Astra takes every single strength and weakness from them and amplifies them; from the payload to the cost, there is nothing about Astra that finds itself not better than its predecessors nor worse in regards to its power draw and recovery time. There was nothing to improve upon any longer, no more dream to be fulfilled in this regard, as Astra would become his idealized weapon in space.

A singular, massive cannon meant for obliteration; nothing more.

Nothing less.

I appreciate the effort that went into this submission, along with the eloquent wording to accompany it. However, this is very clearly a superweapon in earnest. There are no viable changes that could be made to this submission without removing the inherent intent of the submission's purpose. Unfortunately, there are simply no means for which tech like this could exist outside of being a superweapon. The above are just a handful of reasons why this is entirely unacceptable, and I will not ask that any member of the factory team be forced to attempt to make what is very clearly a super-weapon into a super-weapon by another name.

This submission is denied.
