OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Create a new kind of shield generator
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: Particle Shields
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Treatech
  • Affiliation: Treatech Holdings
  • Market Status: Open-Market
  • Model: ASP-7 Arc Shield Projector
  • Modularity: Can be scaled down or up to accomodate various sizes of ships and vehicles
  • Production: Mass-Produced
  • Material: Plastoid, Shield Generators, Projector Motors, Electronics, Arc Caps
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Mobile Arc
    • The ASP-7 shield is not fixed in place like most other shields, instead the shield length is "capped" so that instead of producing a "circle" or "bubble" around the ship, it produces an arc that can be moved around 360 degrees by a pilot or AI system
  • Micro Layers
    • The Asp enhances the durability of the arc shield by projecting multiple layers of shielding, using the energy it would expend projecting a "full" shield to reinforce the arc
  • Multi-Stage Arcs
    • The Arc shield has three modes than increase or decrease arc length and alter strength accordingly
      • Standard: The standard setting for the arc shield is projected from a 90 degree angle.
      • Reinforced: The smaller but more durable reinforced setting is projected from a 45 degree angle. Takes more damage before failing but covers a smaller portion of a ship
      • Wide: The weaker, but larger wide setting is projected from a 145 degree angle. It can take less damage before it fails but can cover more of a ship

(A standard arc length example for a large and small starship, assume the center of the ship is where the center of the circle is)
STRENGTHS
  • Titan Strength
    • Because the shield projects multiple layers of shielding over a single arc, when compared to the same section of a "full" shield the ASP-7 appears much more durable
  • Mobile
    • The ASP-7 is omni-directional, allowing it to be positioned to take on threats from wherever they come from
WEAKNESSES
  • Like Swatting Flies
    • Naturally, because the ASP-7 can only be in one place at a time, multi-directional fire or swarm tactics can defeat this shield without ever having to overwhelm it
  • Runoff
    • While an ASP-7 will block an ion weapon just like any other, it's ability to diffuse ion energy is inconsistant. Ionizing energy has a chance to "runoff" and bypass the shield, causing damage vulnerable subsystems without ever making contact with the ship itself
DESCRIPTION
Proposed as a revolutionary new option for starship captains, the ASP-7 provides a degree of choice in a somewhat rigid field. Most shield technology are alterations on the same thing, providing benefits and drawbacks but ultimately delivering a very similar experience. The ASP-7 is not like any of these, by providing a shield that can move around a starship to prioritize threats, it can more efficiently defend a vessel. Equipped on military and civilian craft alike, the ASP-7 works well as a primary shield system, but on ships that have the power to project supplimentary shields, the ASP really shines. Arc shields can be angled to deal with the most dangerous threats while conventional deflector shields provide more general protection over the entire frame.
