Armor review and brain storm

The Factory RPJ's and I have been discussing considering throwing off the 1-10 quality score and making it a similar format as ships with a spectrum of "Extreme to none" across various items to help balance it out.

This means breaking it down into parts on how well an armor works in regards to kinetic, force, ion/emp, etc in grades along with the type of armor.

This is still in brainstorming session and i'd like to see what ideas we may have.

I find this change needless and adding of more complexity.

To my knowledge there hasn't ever been a really huge concern about current armor ratings and most people get along with it fine.

Why change it if its not broken.

Would we be standardizing what types or damage are? Lightsaber, kinetic, etc?

If so, we could simply make it as easy as Extreme(+material)= <print list of resistances>

Slugs are always easier to protect against than blaster, which are easier than lightsabers, etc.

So there are a few options here. Quite a few armours have come through with such a list of "resistances" (Force, Sonic, EMP, Blaster, Melee, etc) that they don't seem particularly well balanced. Again, we tended to give things away when people spammed out some dev. We've seen resistances in the strengths, in the armor ratings, in the description (sometimes well hidden).

Do Nothing

Keep template as it is, ensure judges know to make sure armour can't just resist everything out there without valid weaknesses.

Do Minimum

Minor change to the template as follows:

Strengths:
  • (Provide, in list format, a minimum of 1 strength of this submission. (If your armour has any specific resistances to types of attack (e.g. Ion/EMP/Lightsabers) please list these here)

Weaknesses :
  • (Provide, in list format, a minimum of 1 weaknesses of this submission. (If your armour is vulnerable to specific types of attack (e.g. Ion/EMP/Lightsabers) please list these here)
Do A Little More
  • Classification: (Anti-Blaster, Anti-Ballistic, Multipurpose, Other)
  • Weight: (Via Metric System. Appropriate weight varies by quality, material, and character species. For example, standard Mandalorian armor is around 10 kg. Armor made of true Mandalorian iron, or a full set of combat gear for a soldier in the field, can be around 25kg. For special items, try to find the weight of a real-world equivalent.)
  • Quality: (Armor class is a measure of general stopping power. Most light armors would be classified as 1-4, most medium armors would be classified as 5-7, and most heavy armors would be classified as 8-10. However, rare or primitive materials, among other factors, can also affect armor class. For example, stormtrooper armor would be class 5, Mandalore's armor or beskar'kandar would be class 10, and a specially forged suit of personal armor for a high-ranking Force user could be anywhere from class 6-9 or thereabouts, depending on how much effort went into it. Many people choose lower armor classes for their custom armor in a trade off for more powerful equipment or specialized resistances, or simply for more mobility. The Armor Rating 9 & 10 will require the submission to be UNIQUE. These armor ratings are considered very strong and are usually dealing with unique items that should be restricted to Player Characters only. )
  • Resistances: (List any specific resistances the armour has [Massdrivers, blunt force weapons, stabbing, lightsabers, blasters, ion, EMP, Force, sonic]. A suit of armour is unlikely to be specifically resistant a wide range of attacks.
Do Lots

DEFENCE RATINGS
  • Classification: (Anti-Blaster, Anti-Ballistic, Multipurpose, Other)

  • MELEE: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • LIGHTSABERS: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • BLASTERS: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • SONIC: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • EMP: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • ION: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)
  • FORCE: How much protection does the armour provide against this type of attack? (Choose from: None, Very Low, Low, Average, High, Very High)

The final options sounded pretty cool when we were having a chat, but it seems too much. I'd be in favour of the middle options because I think for a minor tweak it brings key information about the armour up front in the template.

You are replacing one listing, with 8.

This is literally the definition of over-complication and making things more annoying for the user.

I can't think of a single time that armor ratings have been a problem.

This isn't necessary and just makes it more annoying to fill out a sub and read it. If any of them we should just do the minimum

I think the understanding then passes to the FJs to more carefully judge armors based on their resistances. The main reason for this discussion became that people were putting their armor as resistant to more or less everything, and having no valid, substantiated weaknesses. There have been several instances recently where I was tagged for secondary and the armor in question had no reasonable weaknesses and was resistant to almost everything.

We will go with this.
