Chameleon Infiltration Droid

Image Source: Here. Terminator 3 movie promotional material.
Intent: To create a special, next generation infiltration HRD. This droid can change shape to assume any form of about equal height and mass, and can form its liquid metal into blades. However, this is clearly balanced by weaknesses which mean it is not a foolproof intruder.
Development Thread: Quicksilver (Taeli). (For purchasing) Also Liquid Deception (Archangel) for the testing of the unit in action.
Manufacturer: Archangel Research & Design.
Model: ARD X-2a
Affiliation: Archangel, very, very select customers.
Modularity: No.
Production: Semi-Unique. Archangel only possesses the liquid metal for a very small number of these droids.
Material: High strength polymers, droid components, Mimetic Hydrargyum covering.
Classification: Third/Fourth Degree. HRDs straddle the line between combat and human interaction models.
Weight: 60-80kg depending on the model.
Height: 180cm is the usual height of the basic droids, though they can be manufactured smaller.
Movement: Bipedal
Armaments: The liquid metal can be formed into blades or other stabbing weapons along the hands. Combined with the strength of the unit it allows it to form effective melee attacks against unarmoured opponents.
Misc. Equipment: Visual processing modes; infrared, low-light, 20x magnification. Vocabulator capable of mimicking any known voice and speaking several thousand languages. Invisible communicator with audio or text broadcasting to other units on the same planet. (Secret holonet transceiver used by Archangel to control or monitor units.)
These units possess even better emulation implants based off detailed observation and research of organics allowing them to blend in.
Strengths:
  • Shapeshifter – The Chameleon can change its appearance to match any human or humanoid of the same height and weight. It can realistically form either gender, hair, fur, lekku or any other feature required in order to blend in.
  • Hardcore – With a droid skeleton underneath the liquid metal, the HRD has greater strength than a human, does not feel pain and does not get tired.
  • Social – Chameleons are naturally programmed and able to blend in with crowds. They can act like any humanoid depending on the situation.
  • Resistant – The liquid metal provides protection from blasters and slugthrowers hitting the skeleton beneath. Even though attacks will evaporate the liquid metal it provides an important buffer. The liquid metal can also form short blades as improvised melee weapons.
Weaknesses:
  • Droid – Like any other droid ion weapons are its bane. An ion or electrical blast can also cause the liquid metal to deform and flow off the droid if it interferes with the shape shifting circuits.
  • Light Assault – The Chameleon is not built for severe combat. Its polymer skeleton and liquid metal mean that whilst it is stronger than a human it is not vastly so.
  • Vulnerable – Lightsabres will cut through this unit like a hot knife through butter. Heavy weapons will also quickly disable it, especially explosives.
  • Unreal – Though the droid can create clothes, hair and skin from its liquid metal it’s not quite right. Hair and clothes especially feel off, and of course clothes created in this way cannot be removed.

Description:
The Chameleon Droid is the latest and most natural evolution in the desire to develop more skilled infiltration droids. Infiltration droids can, with effort, be shaped to resemble anyone, but this cannot be done in the field. Thus, in situations where a change in disguise was needed the situation could be complicated.

The Chameleon therefore is designed to combine the lightweight skeleton of the infiltrators with the recently obtained Mimetic Hydrargyrum from Aurora. The result is a droid which can actively change shape ‘on the go’. This shape changing allows the droid to assume any human or humanoid form of the same mass and height of the unit.

Combined with the Infiltrator’s advanced mimicking and adaption protocols this creates a droid able to assume any voice, shape and personality needed. The Chameleon is able to form not just realistic skin and hair with the liquid metal, but clothing as well. Of course, since said ‘clothing’ is basically an illusion it is usually not employed, and real garments are used instead.

Beneath the liquid metal is a droid stronger than any regular human, one without pain or emotion. It will push on until its target is achieved, no matter the cost. The liquid metal can be formed into blades or bludgeoning weapons to assist in this goal.

There are downsides of course, weaknesses which make these not always the most desirable option.

Firstly, although the liquid metal can assume almost any humanoid shape, the height and mass of the unit cannot change. Thus, there is a limit to what shape the unit can assume. Further, the unit’s imitation of skin, clothing and hair doesn’t feel as close to the mark as the previous infiltrators. They feel too…smooth. Hair especially feels off as assembling so many strands is very difficult, thus causing it to bunch up.

Next, the Chameleon lacks in the combat department, just like the Infiltrators. A lightsabre will cut through liquid metal and polymer like a hot knife through butter. Blasters will evaporate the liquid metal and eventually put down the droid. Ion and electrical attacks of course are every droid’s bane, and here it is even more the case. A successful ion attack will actually cause the liquid metal to slough and melt off the skeleton until it can be reincorporated.

Finally, the Chameleon is a very limited production. Unlike the Infiltrators, the Chameleon relies on the liquid metal developed by Aurora. This in turn means that care must be taken not to have one identified as using it in this way might draw unwanted attention to both Archangel and their partners.

The Chameleon is best used for infiltration in a non-personal sense; for instance passing into a restricted area or obtaining details from associates. For close, personal contact and seduction the Infiltrator is a more reliable human analogue. The Chameleon does have significant strengths and if used well is a formidable talent in espionage.
