These rare archeotech devices are often preserved in booby trapped stasis chambers on ancient Sith held worlds, waiting for one worthy enough to defeat whatever protects them. Such devices are too powerful to have been in the hands of the rank and file, meaning these devices are often created for Sith of high stature or their most favored minions The 'lazy' way to make one back in the day was to simply take a standard Sith Energy Shield and make all necessary modifications, and its this latter practice one often encounters in tombs, especially tombs from the Gulag Plague. Shields of this kind created from scratch rarely match the appearance of another in the same manner, and it is this kind that goes for millions on the black market. They all share one thing in common though--the terrible, corrupting power of the Dark Side of The Force
