- Accurate: Packed to the brim with state-of-the-art targeting and tracking systems, with additional counterparts playing the same role to ensure redundancy, and smooth continuation of function even if one of the systems were to be compromised or fail. The AN/ASQ-242 Targeting System is known to be highly accurate, capable of following even the quickest and most agile targets to an extent that even the worst of pilots could at least have a chance of scoring a hit on their enemy.
- Long-Range: Though entirely functional in-atmosphere, the system was designed with deep space operations in mind, and as such its operational range has been focused on to reflect that. Able to lock onto a target from several hundred miles away, and detect a target even further than that. The 242 was built to give its users the initiative when it comes to space combat, which typically is conducted across vast distances.

- EMP Vulnerable: Like many sensitive avionics, the 242 Targeting System can be disabled via the use of ion or electromagnetic pulse weaponry. While it can be protected by the appropriate equipment, it nevertheless remains one of the more fragile components of a starship, simply due to the number of complex moving parts it contains within it. Caution is advised, as a pilot may as well be flying blind without it functional.

Developed by Nakaioma Fleet Systems; the naval aviation division of Osato Aerospace, itself a subsidiary of the NAKAIOMA Corporation, the AN/ASQ-242 Targeting System was released onto both the civilian and military markets in mid 866ABY. Able to either be built into the structure of a starship, with a viewport for its front-facing camera, or simply attached to the bottom of a wing as an easily detachable extension, the 242 like much of NKFS and Osato's avionics inventory was developed as a result of the F-600 Kalidor program, which demanded an assortment of highly capable equipment to go along with it, both for outfitting the starfighter itself, and to be sold to and used for other projects. It was fast-tracked through production, entering low-rate production within months, and full-rate production by the summer of the following year. It is compatible with most missiles, cannons, torpedos and guided bombs.
Generally acting as any conventional targeting system, the AN/ASQ-242 attempts to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack via its accuracy, reliability and remarkable long range capabilities. Close-circuited within the greater system of the starship, the 242 can connect to outside sources in-order to be available as a close air support tool as well as a space superiority one. Allies on the ground, with the correct equipment can connect to the starship's targeting system, and can laser targets for its weapons to home in on. This feature was considered a priority, in-order to widen the scope of combat operations the product could assist in, and thus the clientele that it could service. Small enough to fit onto single-seat fighters, it can likewise be fitted onto separate turbolasers, acting as multiple individual targeting systems for the arsenal of an entire star destroyer.
